Can you believe it that “Paying Guest” was a movie made 50 years ago? And it is equally difficult to believe that almost all its songs sound as fresh as they have always sounded.
And what wonderful songs they are too ! S D Burman was fantastic as a music director, and the lyrics of Majrooh Sultanpuri capture the mood of the songs so nicely.
The underlying theme of two of the songs were playful flirting. One such song was “maana janaab ne pukaara nahin ” which I have already posted. The other song was ” chhod do aanchal zamaaana kya kahega”.
The first song was a Kishore Kumar solo and the second one, the topic of this post, was a duet sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar. And they have sung this song with such involvement.
The song is picturised on Dev Anand and Nutan, and it has been picturised so nicely. Romance, gentle ( yet inoffensive) flirting, innocent looking fun- this song has everything. The creators of this song came up with a timeless classic.
As I have mentioned a few times, the songs of this movie helped further the career of Kishore Kumar as a singer. The same can be said about Asha Bhonsle too. In fact this song in general and this movie in particular was a milestone in the careers of all those who were involved in the creating of its musicla masterpieces.

Evergreen Song !!! yes, a ‘timeless classic’ as mentioned by Atul ji !!
Dev Anand and Nutan a beautiful pair. Have seen their ‘Tere Ghar ke saamne’ umpteen times.
