Muqaabla hamse na karo

This song pits Vyjyantimala, a professionally trained classical dancer ( arguably the best ever female classical dancer in Bollywood history- notwithstanding Padmini, Hema Malini,Jayaprada, Meenakshi Sheshadri etc) with Helen, the best known cabaret dancer in Bollywood movies. And Shammi Kapoor has the envious task of acting as the adjudicator.
Three singing legends have sung this song for three Bollywood legends, and each one of them have given his/ her best in this song. Rafi ( for Shammi), Lata (for Vyjyanti Mala) and Asha Bhonsle ( for Helen) is a dream come true situation. The picturisation shows Vyjyanti Mala performing three different forms of Indian classical dances and Helen responds by performing in three non Indian dance forms. The three dance forms of Vyjyanti Mala are Bharat Natyam, Kathak and Kathakali (I thank Lalitha for corrections). I am not so sure about Helen’s three dance forms. One of them appears Spanish Flamenco dance and another seems like belly dance.
This is one song that is a must watch ( in addition of being a must listen) song. It is one of the rare songs where Shammi Kapoor is not the main attraction, but the two ladies are. And I do not think anyone will complain.

I can’t pick a winner!Both the ladies are flawless.
Another song of Vyjayantimala worth watching is Neel Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein from the film Amrapali.

Talking of dances, indeed Vyjanthimala in Amrapali (Neel Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein) comes to mind.
And of course
But one song that I will always remember is “Tu Hai Mera Prem Devta” from Kalpana. I like this a lot.

What a song! I had never seen this one before, it ranks with another one in an old movie with Vyjayantimala and Padmini (the movie was Raj Tilak, I think). I will have to look up the song and movie.
Btw, the three dance forms portrayed by Vyjayantimala are Bharata Natyam, Kathak and Kathakali.
Definitely a must see for all song and dance lovers!
