Hullo Atuldom
27th April 2009 was the date when Zulfiqar Ali Shah Khan – better known as Feroz Khan- bid adieu to this mortal world. He was only 69 or 73 at that time (there is no clear year of birth available anywhere on the internet).
He was born in Bangalore (which was part of the Kingdom of Mysore at that time) in 1935 (according to some accounts) or 1939 (as mentioned at other places on the internet) to parents who were from Persia & Afghanistan. He was educated in schools of Bangalore but never went to college (by his own admission). But, looking at the way he conducted himself on-screen- the walk, a drawl in the dialogue delivery etc. would make the audiences feel that he was someone who was educated in some overseas university. He brought the wild west to Bollywood with his leather boots, hats and cigars, and he did it with swag.
There are posts on the blog with an admirer (our very own Rajaji) who has written about Feroz Khan’s career in this post.
Today, on the occasion of Feroz Khan’s death anniversary we shall revisit a film that was made by him.
“Apraadh” (1972) had Feroz Khan – the original style icon- debuting as a producer/ director. The cast included Feroz Khan, Mumtaz, Prem Chopra, Fariyal, Shyam Kumar, Iftekhar, Brahm Bhardwaj, Helen, Bhushan Tiwari, Polson, Tuntun etc. with guest appearances by Madan Puri, Mukri, Randhir and Krishan Mehta. It could be categorised in the romance/ action/ thriller genre. It had Kalyanji Anandji as the music directors of the five songs that were written by Indeevar (4) & Hasrat Jaipuri (1). The playback singers used were Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar & Mahendra Kapoor for the five songs of which the following four are on the blog:-
| Song | Date of post | Singer(s) | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tum miley pyaar se | 3 March 2012 | Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle | Picturised on Feroz Khan and Mumtaz |
| Hamaare siwa tumhaare aur kitne deewaane hain | 25 September 2018 | Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar | Picturised on Feroz Khan and Mumtaz |
| Tum ho haseen wafa tumko meree jaan aate aate aayegee | 18 November 2023 | Kishore Kumar | Picturised on Feroz Khan and Mumtaz |
| Ae naujawaan hai sab kuchh yahaan | 7 July 2025 | Asha Bhonsle | Picturised on Helen and Feroz Khan |
“Apradh” had Feroz Khan playing an ace grand prix driver. Mumtaz plays a con woman who is part of a gang. Prem Chopra played Feroz Khan’s older brother who also is into smuggling etc. So, basically, the film was the story of how a con woman falls in love with a grand prix driver- first to help her smuggle diamonds our of Germany and then develops genuine feelings (as all con woman in Indian films have hearts of gold) leading to the marriage of the two.
Trouble comes knocking on their door again – this time it’s Ram’s (Feroz Khan) brother, Harnam (Prem Chopra), who wants Ram to join him in smuggling. Ram, initially refuses, but when Meena (Mumtaz) is abducted, he relents and joins his brother in a career of crime – a change that will have disastrous results for Meena and himself.
I have not seen the film as a whole, but I have read that the film had a song titled “Assalam Alaikum” sung by Mahendra Kapoor,Asha Bhosle. The song was released on the vinyl records but not in the film.
As I sat to write this post, I rushed through the titles of the film on youtube and found that there is no mention of Hasrat Jaipuri or Mahendra Kapoor in there. But we shall have the song today as its audio is available, it is mentioned on the vinyl cover of the film & it will take “Apradh” to YYIIPPEEEEhood.
Editor’s note:-This song is mentioned in HFGK where Hasrat Jaipuri is credited as the lyricist.
