Ham bhi agar bachche hote

Posted on: January 4, 2009

Here is a song that is a perenniel favourite of kids and grown ups both. The song is very well known but few people can tell which movie this song was from. Even I keep forgetting, but it is good that my farmaish senders make my task easier by mentioning the name of the movie with their farmaishes.

As can be noticed, I have decided that today I am going to clear the list of all the farmaishes pending up with me.

This is an archtypical “happy birthday” song, or as we tend to pronounce it a “happy birdday” song. There are three singers in this song, apart from the chorus, but for most listeners it is a Rafi song. It is so informative to realise that this light hearted song is written by Shakeel Badayuni, whom we normally associate with heavy duty shaayari.

In my opinion, a large number of iconic songs in Bollywood movies have been the composition of Ravi, and we sing these songs without even being aware of the composer. This song is very much an iconic song, and is very much composed by Ravi. QED !

The picturisaion shows Joy Mukherjee (daddy), Saira Bano(Mummy) and Johny Walker (Chauffer), and others celebrating the birthday of their small kid. Whenever one thinks of a birthday song, this song is right up there. What a song !

Song-Ham bhi agar bachche hote (Door ki aawaaz ) (1964) Singer-Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Manna Dey, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Ravi

Lyrics

ham bhi agar bachche hote
ham bhi agar bachche hote
naam hamaaraa hotaa gabloo babloo
khaane ko milte laddoo
aur duniyaa kahti “happy birthday to you”
“happy birthday to you”

ham bhi agar bachche hote
ham bhi agar bachche hote
naam hamaaraa hotaa gabloo babloo
khaane ko milte laddoo
aur duniyaa kahti “happy birthday to you”
“happy birthday to you”

koyi laataa gudiyaa, motor, rail
to koyi laataa phirki, lattoo
koyi chaabi kaa tattu
aur duniyaa kahti “happy birthday to you”
“happy birthday to you”

kitni pyaari hoti hai ye bholi si umar
na naukri ki chintaa na roti ki phikar
kitni pyaari hoti hai ye bholi si umar
na naukri ki chintaa na roti ki phikar
nanhe-munne hote ham to dete sau hukum
peechhe-peechhe daddy-mummy banke naukar
chocolate, biscuit, toffee khaate aur peete duddoo
aur duniyaa kahti “happy birthday to you”
“happy birthday to you”

ham bhi agar bachche hote
ham bhi agar bachche hote
naam hamaaraa hotaa gabloo babloo
khaane ko milte laddoo
aur duniyaa kahati “happy birthday to you”
“happy birthday to you”

kaise-kaise nakhre karte gharawaalon se ham
pal mein hanste pal mein rote karte naak mein dam
kaise-kaise nakhre karte gharawaalon se ham
pal mein hanste pal mein rote karte naak mein dam
akkad-bakkad lukka-chhupi kabhi chhuaa-chhoo
karte din bhar hallaa-gullaa dangaa aur udham
aur kabhi zid par ad jaate jaise adiyal tattu
aur duniyaa kahtii “happy birthday to you”
“happy birthday to you”

ham bhi agar bachche hote
ham bhi agar bachche hote
naam hamaaraa hotaa gabloo babloo
khaane ko milte laddoo
aur duniyaa kahati “happy birthday to you”
“happy birthday to you”

ab to ye hai haal ke jab se biitaa bachapan
maan se jhagdaa baap se takkar beewi se anban
ab to ye hai haal ke jab se biitaa bachapan
maan se jhagdaa baap se takkar beewi se anban
kolhu ke ham bail bane hain dhobi ke gadhe
duniyaa bhar ke dande sar pe khaayen danaadan
bachpan apnaa hotaa to na karte dhenchoo-dhenchoo
aur duniyaa kahti “happy birthday to you”
“happy birthday to you”

ham bhi agar bachche hote
ham bhi agar bachche hote
naam hamaaraa hotaa gabloo babloo
khaane ko milte laddoo
aur duniyaa kahati “happy birthday to you”
“happy birthday to you”

I call this type of song a 1-year old song. 🙂
Meaning I feel like I know this song from the age of 1.

I don’t know about kids of the current generation but this was THE birthday song for kids of my (and your) generation, Atul.

I love any song pictured on Johnny Walker! What an expressive face he had. Makes me laugh just to look at him…

I was just humming this song, came to the computer, opened up this site, and here it is – a song to be hummed any time, a cheerful song, full of life and fun. Hmmm, my birthday is coming soon, and I am definitely past the cakes and party stage, but this song can always be enjoyed, so I will have the song. Thanks, Atul!
