Making Bollywood movies is not everyone’s cup of tea. One needs solid financial backing in order to make a movie that people may feel interested in watching. Most successful movies are those which are made by established producers well endowed with financial muscle.
But there are dreamers who dream of making movies that would change their fortunes. They somehow gather resources annd somehow manage to make movies. In a few very rare cases, such moves may hit the jackpot. The biggest example that I can think of is “Jai Santoshi Maa”, which was a C grade movie that unexpectedly became nearly as big a grosser as “Sholay” in 1975.
But most C grade movies are not so lucky. Their poor production values and lack of stars ensure that no one watches their movies.
This movie “Noor Mahal” (1965) was very much a C grade movie and the makers of this movie were as bereft of a story idea as they were bereft of capital. They gathered some small time actors for this movie. Jagdeep, the comedian was made the hero of this movie. That is how the makers of this movie functioned.
When it came to the music, a qawwal, Jaani Babu qawwal was made the music director. Lyricists were just as unknown as the musi directors.
The makers of this movie obviously could not afford to pay big singers. So instead of Lata, they got Suman Kalyanpur. And it was not a bad decision, one must say. Suman Kalyanpur sang the songs of this movie.
One particular song “mere mehboob na jaa aaj ki raat na jaa” became surprisingly popular. For the lyricist called Saba Afghani, this was the biggest moment of his career. Jaani Babu qawwal too got famous with this song.
The picturisation is nothing much to write home about. As I said, the makers of this movie were bereft of a story idea. Just because a lady is shown walking about with veil and a lamp does not make a movie a suspense movie or whatever it was that they intended to make.
But this song is quite something. This is a very nice song to listen to. This song shows us what Suman Kalyanpur was capable of as a singer.

Just fyi, Chandrani’s song is from “Kitne Paas Kitne Door” from 1976, I think.

This was a typical “Bhoot” song, but a Great one – never get tired of hearing it – again n again. I think this song really jacked up Suman’s career too. The vid is on youtube, n i’ve got a download.

Very nice song.
I remember hearing it a lot on radio in the early 80s when I was in Delhi.
I used to always confuse it with Chandrani Mukherjee’s “mere mehboob shaayad aaj kuchh naaraaz hain mujhse”.
Both start with “mere mehboob”..both are non-Lata songs.
In fact that Chandrani song also is good. Maybe you could post that sometime ?
