Blog Day :

4053 Post No. : 15183

22nd August (yesterday) was the remembrance day of the exceptional, yet unsung music director – Ram Prasad Sharma. He had passed away this day in 1995. May be not easily identifiable by himself, he is probably known more through his sons. His four sons have all been well known musicians and instrumentalists, and all have been connected with the film industry. Two of them are also famous as music directors – Pyaarelal ji, of the Laxmikant Pyaarelal duo, and Ganesh.

Ram Prasad’s biographical and filmographic details have been presented earlier on this blog, in the article on the song “Antul Habi Ke Dekho Kabhi” from the film ‘Magic Carpet’, released in 1964. There is also a detailed article by our dear Arun ji, posted here on the blog – Anmol Fankaar.

Today’s song is also from the same film – ‘Magic Carpet’. The film is directed by Babubhai Mistry, under the banner of Unique Pictures, Bombay. This is stunt cum fantasy film – a typical ‘jaadugar sainyyaan’ type film. The cast of actors includes Chitra, Azaad, Bhagwan, BM Vyas, Bela Bose, Dalpat, Kesri, Bimla Kashmiri, and a host of junior artists, listed as Aroon, Maqbool, Radhe Shyam, Arvind Kumar, Mehroo Bai, Bakshi, Master Kisore, Kalla, Rafiq, Sandow, Dawood, Amir, Musa, Julian, Khalil, Rehman, Salim, Zippy and Nagina.

The film has five songs which are penned by four songwriters – Farooque Kaiser, Shakeel Nomaani, Arsh Farooque and Jia Dehalvi. This song is written by Jia Dehalvi – as the pseudonym suggests, he is from Delhi. 🙂 Music is by Ram Prasad Sharma. The singing voice is that of Asha Bhosle.

On screen, the song is performed as a twin dance, with both dancers lip syncing the playback from Asha. The dancers are Chitra and Bela Bose. Now, I am not completely certain, and am open for being corrected. Some familiarity with the performers and the absence of any other name that sounds like a dancer, in the list of actors given above. I request other more knowledgeable friends in the group to please correct or confirm. 🙂

There are two other gentlemen in the frame. I request for help to identify them, as I do not yet have access to software that will help to remove the beards from the faces of men in video clips. 😀 😀 Given the names in the list of actors, I believe one of them could be Dalpat. Please help to identify them.

A lilting dance song this one. Listening to this song, I can hear the sources of inspiration for the torrent of music that flowed from the works of L-P. This, and many others like this from B and C grade films of 1950s and 1960s, form a string of very pleasing memories from the radio listening days. I am sure you will enjoy this.

Song – O Sainyyaan Be-Peer Koi Teer Na Chalaana  (Magic Carpet) (1964) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Jia Dehlavi, MD – Ram Prasad

Lyrics

o sainyyaan be-peer
koi teer na chalaana
o sainyyaan be-peer
koi teer na chalaana
tu mere
chhote se
dil ko na tadpaana
tu mere
chhote se
dil ko na tadpaana
o sainyyaan be-peer
koi teer na chalaana
o sainyyaan be-peer
koi teer na chalaana

maine maana tu hai
puraana
sharaabi
maine maana tu hai
puraana
sharaabi
lekin in aankhon ki
juda hai
gulaabi
nazar se
pee le to boley tu
mai to fuzool hai
o sainyyaan be-peer
koi teer na chalaana
o sainyyaan be-peer
koi teer na chalaana

aisi berukhi na
kar hum se
khudaara
aisi berukhi na
kar hum se
khudaara
de de mujhko apni
baahon ka
sahaara
sanam ke
naaz uthaana to
pyaar ka usool hai
o sainyyaan be-peer
koi teer na chalaana
o sainyyaan be-peer
koi teer na chalaana

tauba teri nazren
hain tirchhi
kamaanen
tauba teri nazren
hain tirchhi
kamaanen
tu ne to li hongi
hazaaron
ki jaanen
sitamgar
kisko jawaani mein
marna qubool hai
o sainyyaan be-peer
koi teer na chalaana
o sainyyaan be-peer
koi teer na chalaana
tu mere
chhote se
dil ko na tadpaana
tu mere
chhote se
dil ko na tadpaana
o sainyyaan be-peer
koi teer na chalaana
o sainyyaan be-peer
koi teer na chalaana

tum samay ki ret par chhodte chalo nishaan
dekhti tumhen zameen
dekhta hai aasmaan

These uplifiting lines are from the pen of Saraswati Kumar Deepak. The poetry composed sometimes in the early 1950s, was presented as a song in the 1953 film ‘Naya Raasta’. Saraswati Kumar Deepak is a song writer who has been confined to mythological and religious fare for most of his career. Active in the Hindi cinema since 1943, his songs can be heard in films all the way to the end of 1970s.

Remembering Saraswati Kumar Deepak today (8th July) on the anniversary of his passing away. And incidentally, yesterday (7th July) was his birth anniversary also.

He was born on 7th July 1918, at Navsthala Hasanpur in district Bulanshehar in Uttar Pradesh. His original name was Ram Gopal Sharma. Not much information is available about his early years. His education was in Hindi and Sanskrit. He did his BA from Meerut College. As a young man, he had begun writing poetry and prose.

In early forties he came to Bombay, and in 1942 he joined the production house of Fazli Brothers. His first assignment was as the writer of advertisements and promotional material in Hindi, for the films produced by Fazli Brothers. His first song appeared in the film ‘Zabaan’ of 1943 – “Dheere Se Kadam Badhaata Chal, Bigdi Taqdeer Banaata Chal”, which was composed by C Ramchandra and sung by Ishwarlal and Kaushalya. His next song – “Soti Hun Ab Chanda Mujhe Jagaa Dena”, appeared 1944, in the film ‘Badi Baat’. The song was rendered by Amirbai under the direction of Feroze Nizami. This song became very popular in its time, and the name of its writer started getting known somewhat in the industry.

In 1945, his songs appeared in ‘Piya Milan’ and ’Swarn Bhoomi’. However, 1946 became a defining year for him. Four films were released that carried songs written by him – ‘Bhakt Prahlad’, ‘Dev Kanya’, ‘Maansarovar’ and ‘Uttra Abhimanyu’. As the names of these films suggest, yes, they had an effect to have Saraswati Kumar typecast as a writer for religious and mythological films. This categorization he was never able to shake off for the rest of his career.

That is not to say that he did not write other type of songs for other genres of films. The songs “Kahin Ka Deepak Kahin Ki Baati” (‘Aag’, 1948), “Raat Gayi Phir Din Aata Hai” (‘Boot Polish’, 1953, and “Nigaahon Se Dil Mein Chale Aayiega” (‘Hameer Hath’, 1964) are a sampler that represents that wide portfolio of genres he could handle. He has written close to 350 songs for about 100 Hindi films. Besides that, he translated and dubbed the songs and the dialogues for about 25 regional language films.

Saraswati Kumar was not just a song writer. He was also a screenplay writer, a dubbing specialist and a renowned author of literature for children. Books like ‘Haathi Ghoda Paalki’ and ‘Jai Janani, Jai Bharati’ became quite popular and famous. He used to write a lot for All India Radio – plays, songs, sponsored programs etc. for two years, he anchored the program ‘Apni Kahaani, Apni Zubaani’ – sponsored by Bank of Baroda. And above all, as a journalist, he continuously contributed stories and articles for newspapers and magazines.

He passed away in 1986, just after completing his 68 year.

The film ‘Bansari Bala’ is produced by Moghabhai Deasi under the banner of Desai Productions, Bombay, and is directed by Nanubhai Vakil. The cast of actors listed for this film is Chitra, Daljeet, Maruti, Niranjan Sharma, Krishna Kumari, Ram Singh, Tiwari, Mishra, Kamal, Meenu Mumtaz, Wazir Muhammad Khan, Susheel Kumar, Nadir Mota, Razia, Rafiq, Munshi Munakka, Jugnu, Shashimala, Savitri, Jagdish Kamal, Heera Sawant, Sheela Waaz, Suresh Nigam, Master Rajesh, and Al Nasir.

Geet Kosh lists 9 songs for this film. Six songs are written by Pandit Faani and the remaining three are by Saraswati Kumar Deepak. Music direction is by Kamal Mitra. All the three songs which are written by Saraswati Kumar Deepak have been sung by Sudha Malhotra. One of these three is already showcased here on our blog – “Main To Chanda Ki Nagri Se Aayi Re”.

Today’s lilting song is in the sweet singing voice is of Sudha Malhotra. Words are from the pen of Saraswati Kumar Deepak, and the signature melody is by Chitragupt. On screen, the song is performed by Chitra, who tells about her heart after someone came to her dreams and cast a captivating spell on her. The song is filmed in a garden. And we can see the subject of her aspirations (Daljeet) also present there, although she is not aware as she continues with the song.

The lyrics of this song have been sent in by Nitin Shah.

Listen and enjoy.

पल दो पल का साथ हमारा, पल तो पल के याराने हैं
इस मंज़िल पर मिलने वाले

उस मंज़िल पर खो जाने हैं

Yes, we know, and we realize it. But still, it does seem that this साथ was not even justified as दो पल or even one. खो जाने वाली मंज़िल, कुछ बहुत ही जल्दी आ गई. . .

Skipping the letters ‘ढ’ and ‘ण’
‘ढ’ – very few songs starting with this letter – either all used, or not applicable to this series.
‘ण’ does not have any song starting with this letter. Made a very interesting discovery as I browsed the Hindi dictionary for words starting with ‘ण’. There is only one word that starts with this letter. More interestingly, the letter itself has uses as a monosyllabic word, and has at least 10 meanings associated. Wow.

So we come to the letter ‘प’ today. And here is a wonderfully lovely song to go with it.

Today’s episode of this series brings up the second song of the film ‘Magic Carpet’ (1964), one of the ‘jaadugar sainyaan’ category of films, which were a popular genre in the 1950s and 60s. Although classified as B/C grade films, this category of films had their own distribution circuits, their own cinema halls where they were exhibited, and a very loyal coterie of audience who would not let go even one of this category without a visit.

The film is produced by AM Bhanji under the banner of Unique Pictures, Bombay and is directed by Babubhai Mistry. In the Geet Kosh, the cast of actors is listed as a very short list – Chitra, Azaad, BM Vyas and Bhagwan. The additional names of actors in this film, as taken from the casting credits in the film (that has now become thankfully available in public domain), are Bela Bose, Dalpat, Bimla Kashmiri, Kesri, Aroon, Maqbool, Radhe Shyam, Arvind Kumar, Mehroo Bai, Bakshi, Master Kishore, Kalla, Rafiq, Sandow, MD, Dawood, Amir, Musa, Julian, Khalil, Rehman, Salim, Zippy and Nagina.

Geet Kosh lists five songs for this film, penned by four poets, Jia Dehlavi, Shakeel Nomaani, Aish Farooqi and Farooque Kaiser. This song is written by Shakeel Nomaani. The music – by Ram Prasad. Yes, he is the same Ram Prasad Sharma, father of Pyaarelal (of Lxmikant Pyaarelal duo) and Ganesh. A brief about this music director is included in the post for the song “Antul Habi Ke Dekho Kabhi. . .“.

The singing voices are of Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle. On screen, we see this song initiated by Bhagwan Dada, and a lady, whose name, if I may hazard a guess, is Bimla Kashmiri. I could be wrong, and I welcome inputs from more knowledgeable readers and friends, to correct or confirm this guess.

As the song progresses, we also see Azaad and Chitra in the clip. Majority of the performance of the song is by Bhagwan and Bimla Kashmiri. Azaad does not appear to lip sync any of the lines, but Chitra does take up lip syncing in one of the stanzas. So in all, the onscreen performance and mapping to the playback voices, is kind of mixed up in this song.

And so, this song brings up the 24th episode in this series. Listen and enjoy.

Song – Pyaar Ki Baaten Koi Na Jaane Yaad Teri Phir Aaye  (Magic Carpet) (1964) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Shakeel Nomaani, MD – Ram Prasad
Mohammed Rafi + Asha Bhosle

Lyrics

pyaar ki baaten koi na jaane
yaad teri phir aaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye

chaand sa chehra zulfen kaali
nazar na lag jaaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye

dil ko teri tirchhi nazar ne
de diya hai sahaara
dil ko teri tirchhi nazar ne
de diya hai sahaara
jaao aji jhoothe kahin ke
tum na samjhe ishaara
hum shama aur tum parwaane
raaz na khulne paaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
chaand sa chehra zulfen kaali
nazar na lag jaaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye

kaabu ab dil par nahin hai
gaa rahi hain bahaaren
kaabu ab dil par nahin hai
gaa rahi hain bahaaren
jaise tujhe dulhan banaane
aa rahi hain bahaaren
door ka jalwa dil na maane
dil se nikle haaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
pyaar ki baaten koi na jaane
yaad teri phir aaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye

dekho mujhe aise na dekho
kya kahega zamaana
dekho mujhe aise na dekho
kya kahega zamaana
jaayen kahaan teri gali se
koi nahin hai thikaana
meri ada ke o deewaane
kaun tujhe samjhaaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
chaand sa chehra zulfen kaali
nazar na lag jaaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye

Missing Films of 1960s – 29
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

With this post, I introduce another missing film from the 1960s. The film is ‘Khufia Mahal’ from 1964. As I checked out the songs of this film, I find some very lovable compositions. And why not. The music is from the mind of that one another unsung genius of that era – Pardesi. With a career that was limited to just four films, one sees him active from 1960 to 1972. And after that, lost in the dusks of anonymity. Nothing much more is available in terms of information, other than the 30+ songs he has created, some of which are real gems.
