Kya mil gaya haay kya kho gaya

Posted on: January 5, 2009

What a beautiful song from Sasuraal (1961) ! I had never heard this song before, and but for the farmaish of this song, I would have remained oblivious of this song.

As things stand, only a few songs go on to become huge all time popular songs, and as far as this movie was concerned, it had its share of a huge all time popular song too viz “teri pyaari pyaari soorat ko kisi ki nazar na lage”- which was the most popular Bollywood somg of 1961 as adjusted by Binaca geetmala.

This particular song “kya mil gaya haay” was nowhere in popularity stakes those days, but we must remember that those were the days when popularity of songs were hampered by the fact that technology to make them readily available to public was not there. Most people were reliant on radio and movie to savour these songs, and records were too expensive for most people to afford.

Now that owning songs has become far more affordable, it has become possible to dig out forgotten songs and savour them, irrespective of how they fared in the past.

And going strictly by merit, this is an outstanding song, that I loved the very first time that I listened to it, viz today. What a great song !

The picturisation is great too. It has been picturised at the Brindawan gardens in Mysore. Rajendra Kapoor and B Saroja Devi figure in this song. Those were the days !

Song-Kya mil gaya haay kya kho gaya(Sasuraal) (1961) Singers-Lata, Rafi, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

kyaa mil gayaa haay kyaa kho gayaa
mujhe mere baalam ye kyaa ho gayaa
ham kho gaye haay tum kho gaye
muhabbat ki raahon mein dil kho gayaa
kyaa mil gayaa haay kyaa kho gayaa
mujhe mere baalam ye kyaa ho gayaa
hoy hoy ham kho gaye aji tum kho gaye
muhabbat ki raahon mein dil kho gayaa

ye khushiyon ke pyaale chhalakte chalenge
hawaaon ke aanchal mahakte chalenge
hoy naye raaste khud-ba-khud khul chalenge
jidhar se bhi ham-tum bahakte chalenge
ye khushiyon ke pyaale chhalakte chalenge
hawaaon ke aanchal mahakte chalenge
hoy naye raaste khud-ba-khud khul chalenge
jidhar se bhi ham-tum bahakte chalenge
ho bahakte chalenge aaa
kyaa mil gayaa haay kyaa kho gayaa
mujhe mere baalam ye kyaa ho gayaa
ham kho gaye aji tum kho gaye
muhabbat ki raahon mein dil kho gayaa

jahaan se safar ye shuru ho rahaa hai
naye ik zamaane ki wo ibtidaa hai
kahin tum kabhi tum bhulaa to na doge
dhadaktaa huaa dil meraa poochhtaa hai
jahaan se safar ye shuru ho rahaa hai
naye ik zamaane ki wo ibtidaa hai
kahin tum kabhi tum bhulaa to na doge
dhadaktaa huaa dil meraa poochhtaa hai
dil meraa poochhtaa hai aaa
ham kho gaye haay tum kho gaye
muhabbat ki raahon mein dil kho gayaa
kyaa mil gayaa haay kyaa kho gayaa
mujhe mere baalam ye kyaa ho gayaa

har ik baat geeton mein dhalne lagi hai
har ik aarzoo phir machalne lagi hai
ho tum apni in aankhon kaa jaadu to dekho
ke duniyaa hi meri badalne lagi hai
har ek baat geeton mein dhalne lagi hai
har ek aarzoo phir machalne lagi hai
ho tum apni in aankhon kaa jaadu to dekho
ke duniyaa hi meri badalne lagi hai
ho badalne lagi hai haay haay haay haay haay
kyaa mil gayaa haay kyaa kho gayaa
mujhe mere baalam ye kyaa ho gayaa
ham kho gaye haay tum kho gaye
muhabbat ki raahon mein dil kho gayaa

That was a really beautiful song. Thank you for including this song. Brindavan gardens used to be a popular backdrop in those days, and it looks even better in color. The first song that comes to my mind is “Nain so nain nahin milaao …” from Jhanak Jhanak Paayal baaje. I think there was a song in Padosan also that was picturised here, and there have been countless songs with Jeetu, Shammi Kapoor and the others, but the JJPB song is probably the best.

Really? That JJPB song has already been posted in this blog and I was not aware of this fact.

Thanks for posting this one too.
I thought Saroja Devi was very beautiful in those days.
I think I would watch a movie of that period purely for her.
And, except for Nutan and Madhubala, I cannot think of another heroine of that period that I would say the same thing about.

It is a lovely song, and as I said, I have been listening to this song for the first time only just now.

I can not help to cry everytime I hear this beautiful song.
It is just so sweet – and sad. Can anybody translate the lyrics for me? Pleeeease!

Beautiful Song! I also heard today for the first time. Had it been in Eastman colour actual beauty of Saroja Devi could be ascertained.

The name of the film and serials sometimes disturb me a lot. As here, SASUR-al (sasural) – SASUR is pradhan why not SAAS-al or SAAS-raal.

Similarly “Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.” Why not “Sasura Bhi Kabhi Jamai Tha.”

what a song ! the fast paced tune typical of S-Jlifts the mundane lyrics to sheer beauty.

As mentioned by you, the other song teri pyari was so popular, this song could never gets its due in those days.

in fact , i used to hear such rare gems in Radio Ceylon in those days since vivid bharati omitted from their broadcast list many of such songs especially of S-J.
One more trivia – the song of 4.48 mts had been edited to 3 minutes to accomadate 48 rpm vynyl records. thanks

A forgotten melody from golden era. Video has all stanzas repeated twice but Audio version has all stanzas once only and seems more consistant on hearing. The audio only link is
