Gori chalo na hans ki chaal

Posted on: January 5, 2009

Here is one song that I have listened to in the past , but not with much attention. This time, I gave it my proper attention, and discovered what a nice song it was.

The song is from a movie called “Beti Bete” (1964) and it has been picturised not on the main actors but on Mehmood and Shubha Khote. The song has been sung beautifully by Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist and Shankar Jaikishan is the music director.

This song just failed to make it to the finals of Binaca geetmala in 1964. But that does not detract one bit from its quality. to put things in perspective, even “isharon isharo mein dil lene waale” from “Kashmir ki kali” had suffered the same fate in Binaca geetmala that year.

As far as 2009 is concerned, this song is a great song that is still alive and kicking.

Song-Gori chalo na hans ki chaal (Beti Bete) (1964) Singers-Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

gori chalo na hans ki chaal zamaanaa dushman hai
teri umar hai solah saal zamaanaa dushman hai
kuchh parwaah nahin sarkaar zamaanaa dushman ho
mujhe tumse huaa hai pyaar zamaanaa dushman ho
o gori chalo na hans ki chaal zamaanaa dushman hai
teri umar hai solah saal zamaanaa dushman hai

o chaand si ujli haseenaa tum chhod do aanaa-jaanaa
rokegaa tumhaari raahen ham jaisaa koyi deewaanaa
koyi laakh lagaaye pahre main pahre tod ke aaun
hoon teri milan ki pyaasi main duniyaa chhod ke aaun
o gori chalo na hans ki chaal zamaanaa dushman hai
teri umar hai solah saal zamaanaa dushman hai
kuchh parwaah nahin sarkaar zamaanaa dushman ho
mujhe tumse huaa hai pyaar zamaanaa dushman ho

ye ishq hai aag kaa dariyaa tum soch-samajh ke utarnaa
hain ismen hazaaron toofaan aasaan nahin hai guzarnaa
jab pyaar kaa bandhan baandhaa phir aag ho yaa ho paani
dar jaaye wo kaisi ulfat dar jaaye wo kaisi jawaani
o gori chalo na hans ki chaal zamaanaa dushman hai
teri umar hai solah saal zamaanaa dushman hai
kuchh parwaah nahin sarkaar zamaanaa dushman ho
mujhe tumse huaa hai pyaar zamaanaa dushman ho

Thanks for posting this farmaish of mine, Atul.
I like this song a lot.
Simple, easy on the ears and quite hummable.

Yes, this song is so simple and easy on the ears. And it is good to be able to savour a song like this in the confines of our homes, whenever we feel like listening to it. It was something that was not possible just a few decade ago, when songs like this were being created. Then one needed to depend on radio/ loud speakers to listen to such songs. In case the radio stations/ loud speaker wallahs decided not to play a song, its popularity suffered a great deal.

That way, it was a less “popular” song, if I remember correctly. But that does not matter now a days and this song is righly getting the attention that it deserved.

Easy on the ears, that says it. These songs were all so pleasant to listen to that one misses such hummable songs these days. I see movies these days and cannot recall a single song with ease. The lyrics were simple and clear, the tunes simple and hummable, what good days they were!

This song reminds me of another similar song with the same couple in Sasural – “Apni ulfat pe zamane ka na pehra hota to kitna accha hota …” Again, a song that was easy on the ears and melodious. Thanks for bringing back these songs.
