Aji roothkar ab kahaan jaayiyega

Posted on: January 11, 2009

Old Bollywood movies had party scenes, where there would be a good gathering, and one of the main characters ( hero or heroine, either alone, or together) would sing a song.

Another thing that I notice about these songs was that these parties would be held on a big palatial home of the Hero/ heroine. Yes, hero/ heroines, whatever their economical status in the movie used to live in palatial residences in these movies. 😉

The aforementioned palatial residence had a hall, with a staircase in the hall going up to the upper floor. A piano was kept in the hall. Whichever character was required to sing a song would go towards the piano and sit/ stand near it and sing a song.

The listeners too were required to follow certain Bollywood protocols, viz they wouldstand motionless and expressionless as long as the song was going on. Only the hero/ heroine/ villain were allowed to remain in motion.

Here is an archtypical party song from the movie “Aarzoo” (1965). This song was sung by Lata and was picturised on Sadhana who is required to sing a song in the party.

PS-Now I have been informed that this song also has a Rafi song. well, I vaguely remembered it as it is one movie that I have actually seen in the movie hall.
This song is sort of like the theme song of the movie, ever ready to get played just about at any opportunity. In fact, I remember this song getting played in the movie at the drop of a hat. 😀

Since these days I have become particular about discussing all the versions of multiple version songs, it is only natural that I should include all the versions of this song that I can find, so here are both versions of this song.

aji rooth kar ab kahaan jaayiyegaa
jahaan jaayiyegaa hamen paayiyegaa
aji rooth kar ab kahaan jaayiyegaa
jahaan jaayiyegaa hamen paayiyegaa
aji rooth kar ab

nigaahon se chhupkar dikhaao to jaanen
khayaalon mein bhi tum na aao to jaanen
aji laakh parda mein chhup jaayiyegaa
aji laakh parda mein chhup jaayiyegaa
nazar aayiyegaa nazar aayiyegaa
aji rooth kar ab kahaan jaayiyegaa
jahaan jaayiyegaa hamen paayiyegaa
aji rooth kar ab

jo dil mein hai hothon pe laanaa bhi mushkil
magar usko dil mein chhupaanaa bhi mushkil
nazar ki zubaan se samajh jaayiyegaa
nazar ki zubaan se samajh jaayiyegaa
samajh kar zaraa gaur farmaayiyegaa
aji rooth kar ab kahaan jaayiyegaa
jahaan jaayiyegaa hamen paayiyegaa
aji rooth kar ab kahaan jaayiyegaa
jahaan jaayiyegaa hamen paayiyegaa
aji rooth kar ab

Ajee ham se bach kar kahan jaayiyegaa
jahaan jaayiyegaa hamen paayiyegaa
ajee ham se bach kar

ye kaisa nasha hai yeh kaisa asar hai
na qaabu mein dil hai na bas mein nazar hai
zara hosh aa le chaley jaayiyegaa
zara hosh aa le chaley jaayiyegaa
theher jaayiyegaa theher jaayiyegaa
ajee ham se bach kar kahan jaayiyegaa
jahaan jaayiyegaa hamen paayiyegaa
ajee ham se bach kar kahan jaayiyegaa
jahaan jaayiyegaa hamen paayiyegaa
ajee ham se bach kar

I once told “memsaab” about this. One of my aunts who was born and brought up abroad got married in India in the 1970s. And she says she was so disappointed in the beginning that there was no singing and piano at the parties!!

Another fact about these scenes is that the guests, after standing around motionless and expressionless, quietly all left together at the end of song: talk about a jug of cold water…

Have you noticed that any musical show songs in Hindi films also consisted of singing ONE song, where upon everyone clapped and left??

Yes, very good observations. 🙂

I was bit surprised that in this song discussion, no mention was made of Lata singing in a very high note. I doubt if any one of the current lots of female playback singers has capacity to sing this song in such a high note.

Yes, you got it absolutely right.
Very high notes and rarely someone sings this on original scale.

Another version of the same song, this time a rafi solo :

lyrics :
Ajee ham se bach kar kahan jaayiyegaa
jahan jaayiyegaa hamein paayiyegaa
yeh kaisa nasha hai yeh kaisa asar hai
na qaabu mein dil hai na bas mein nazar hai
zara hosh aa le chale jaayiyegaa
zara hosh aa le chale jaayiyegaa
teher jaayiyegaa teher jaayiyegaa
Ajee ham se bach kar kahan jaayiyegaa
jahan jaayiyegaa hamein paayiyegaa

There is a third version also of this song, just a few lines towards the end of the film which is :
Andheron se bach kar kahan jaayiyegaa.

The song is only heard in the movie.

Thanks. I was not aware of Rafi version of this song.

I noticed that even Rafi had some problem singing in high notes, lines in this song. Note when he repeats the high note line.

I am not really trained in music. So i wont know if this is really a very high note or even highest pitch for this type of song. But i have observed this type of lapses (?) in a few songs by Shankar Jaikishan especially. As for Rafi this song really isnt out of his comfort zone, IMHO. In 1965 he was at his peak as a singer, he is known for his ability to sing at higher pitches too.

If you see other songs of “Aarzoo” they also appear to be sung in higher notes. I have read some place that Shankar-Jaikishan at one time got so busy that they would hastily record songs, this could be the reason for this particular song too. In this context, if request you to visit the page https://atulsongaday.wordpress.com/2009/03/02/ehsan-tera-hoga-mujh-par/

The lata version there sounds as a hastily canned song.

Regards.

And what is the reason for tagging Arzoo Lucknowi for this song?

While typing Aarzoo, the title of the movie, the words Aarzoo Lucknowi may have sneaked in unnoticed.
