Hullo Atuldom
Today is a special day for Kaka fans. It would have been his 78th birthday.
On this occasion here is a song which is from Kaka a.k.a Jatin Khanna popular among his fans as Rajesh Khanna’s productional debut. “Alag Alag” (1985). It was produced by Rajesh Khanna and Kusum Narula, under the banner of Aashirwaad Films International, Bombay.
A small anecdote is noted – that Kishore Kumar did not accept any payment for his singing assignments in this film. He said that he felt indebted to Rajesh Khanna and ‘Aradhana’ for catapulting his career to a new high, and this being Rajesh’s first film as a producer, he would sing for him without accepting any payments.
The star cast of this film is listed as Shashi Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Tina Munim, Deven Verma, Sushma Seth, Gita Siddhartha, Urmila Bhatt, Anjana, Raj Rani, Rajesh Puri, Subiraj, Asit Sen, Bharat Bhushan, Bhagwan, Satyen Kappu, Mohan Choti, Birbal, Vikas Anand, Manmauji, Manik Dutt, Sunil Dhawan, Gurbachhan, with special appearance by Bindu and friendly appearances by Om Prakash and Om Shivpuri. Music director was Kaka’s favorite RDB who was instrumental in securing Kak’s position as a superstar in the beginning of the ’70s. Anand Bakshi another of those responsible for the Kaka phenomenon was the lyricist. And finally the director was Shakti Samanta- the maker of ‘Aradhana’, ‘Kati Patang’ ‘Amar Prem’ etc. All-in-all the movie had everything that would have ensured a success at the box-office.
It seems that it was inspired from a Pakistani film “Meherbani” that released in 1982. It is remembered for its different story-line and its picturesque locales-Kashmir. I am sure our Nahmji has mentioned this in one of her recent posts about how she went location-spotting on her tour of Kashmir. One of the reviewers of this movie has mentioned that this was a movie where Tina Munim showed sparks of being a dedicated actress.
Sudhirji has given the story of the movie in this writeup. Sudhirji’s post mentions that the Geet Kosh has listed seven songs for this movie in addition to the song that he had unearthed.
Today we will be having the fifth song of ‘Alag Alag’ which is sung by Rajesh Khanna’s voice Kishore Kumar. It is reminiscent of all the melodious and melancholic songs of the period when Kaka was on his upward movement. It has his eyes doing all the speaking. Lata Mangeshkar sings for Tina Munim.
Wishing he was still with us.

aaaaa aaaaa
aaaaa aaaaa
kaagaz kalam dawaat le ye kissa likhe koi
kaagaz kalam dawaat le ye kissa likhe koi
raanjha raanjha karte phir ik heer deewaani hoyi
jab se tujhko dekha aa aa aa
jab se tujhko dekha hai
main sabko bhool gayi hoon
auron ki kya baat karen
main rab ko bhool gayi hoon
tere naam ke siwa aa kuchh yaad nahin
tere naam ke siwa kuchh yaad nahin
kya shaadi kya doli kaise chaar gavaah kya kaazi
duniya se kya lena dena
dil raazi rab raazi
jogi ban ko jaaye ae ae ae
jogi ban ko jaaye
mujhko jaana tere dwaare
tere dwaare ko jaate
duniya ke raste saare
tere naam ke siwa kuchh yaad nahin
tere naam ke siwa kuchh yaad nahin
mujhe kya ho gaya kuchh yaad nahin
toone kya kar diya mujhe yaad nahin
tere naam ke siwa kuchh yaad nahin
tere naam ke siwa kuchh yaad nahin
laaj ke pehre toot gaye
na toota pyaar ka waada
jab jab shyaam ne bansi chhedi
tadap uthhi ye raadha
prem ke raste mein hai oonche ae ae
ho o
prem ke raste mein hain unchhe parvat saagar gehre
hum premi aankhon se andhe aur kaanon se behre
tere naam ke siwa kuchh yaad nahin
tere naam ke siwa kuchh yaad nahin
mujhe kya ho gaya kuchh yaad nahin
toone kya kar diya kuchh yaad nahin
tere naam ke siwa kuchh yaad nahin
tere naam ke siwa kuchh yaad nahin

Peevecie’s Mom,
Good that you too reached Kashmit locations while looking for Rajesh Khanna song 🙂 .
The songs of this movie, mainly the title song and the songs of film “Agar tum na hote” suffered from over exposure, I think.
