Ek daal par totaa boley

Ravindra Jain was a newcomer when he got the opportunity of composing the music for “Chor Machaaye Shor”. And it was his music that revived the career of Shashi Kapoor as a hero.
Looking back, I find it interesting that this movie was perhaps the only time when Ravindra Jain worked with big names. Shashi Kapoor as hero, and Mumtaz as heroine, and Rafi, Lata, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle singing for him.
After this movie, Ravindra Jain became the regular music director of Rajshri Productions, where they used to make movies on a shoe string budget with unknown actors and singers. Ravindra Jain composed many great songs with singers like Jaspal Singh, Hemlata,Suresh Wadkar, Yesudas etc, but the height that his music touched in “Chor Machaaye Shor” was not touched in any other movie, in my opinion.
The most popular song of “Chor Machaaye Shor” was the humdinger “Le jaayenge, le jaayenge, dilwaale dulhaniya le jaayenge”, which was sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle.
Other songs are just as nice to listen to. This song “ek daal par tota bole” has such melodious music that I can listen to this song just for its music. This song is sung by another legendary singing pair of Bollywood, viz Rafi and Lata. And what a superb performance they have given in this song.
Two great duets sung by two legendary pair of singers in the same movie. No wonder Ravindra Jain’s stock rose skyhigh after this movie.
In fact, there are other nice songs in this movie too, and I will post these songs as well. In fact, I have already posted one such song viz “ghunghroo ki tarah bajta hi raha hoon main”.
These three songs should be enough to support my contention that “Chor Machaaye Shor” was quite a movie from music point of view.
Song-Ek daal par totaa bole (Chor Machaaye Shor) (1974) Singers-Rafi,Lata, Lyrics-Inderjeet Singh Tulsi, MD-Ravindra Jain
Lyrics
ek daal par totaa bole
ek daal par totaa bole
ek daal par mainaa
door-door baithe hain lekin pyaar to phir bhi hai naa
bolo hai naa hai naa hai naa
o o ek daal par totaa bole
ek daal par mainaa
main tere nainon ki nindiyaa tu mere dil kaa chainaa
bolo hai naa hai naa hai naa
ek daal par totaa bole
ye kyaa mujhko ho gayaa saajan kabhi roun kabhi gaaun
ped se lipti bel jo dekhoon laaj se mar-mar jaaun
ye paagalpan kaisaa kab se ho gayaa aisaa
bin batlaaye samjho saajan aaj nahin kuchh kahnaa
bolo hai naa hai naa hai naa
hai naa
ek daal par totaa bole …
aandhi aaye toofaan aaye yaa barsen barsaaten
ik dooje mein kho jaayen ham khatm na ho din-raaten
khatm na ho din-raaten
meethi pyaar ki baaten
honth agar khaamosh rahen to bol uthenge nainaa
bolo haina haina haina
haina
ek daal par totaa bole
ek daal par mainaa
door-door baithe hain lekin pyaar to phir bhi hai naa
bolo hai naa hai naa hai naa
bolo haina haina haina
bolo haina haina haina

Thanks Atul for your info on the visually-impaired Ravindra Jain who is an all-rounder and multi-talented personality. Looking back, it does appear that he brought a fresh wave of filmy music in Bollywood. His Kanch Aur Heera launched him in Bollywood in 1972. It was Rafi Sahaab’s song: NAZAR AATI NAHIN MANZIL, which won him encomiums then. His earlier movie was not released.
As a Rafi Sahaab’s fan, I take this opportunity to say that according to Ravindra Jain, there has been no playback singer of the rank of Rafi Sahaab. Even as late as the last month he did pay a glowing tribute to his memory on a TV channel.
A Lata song in Saudagar, TERA MERA SAATH RAHE entrances me whenever I hear it. What a composition Ravindra Jain Sahaab!
Of course CHITCHOR songs were or are a great hit. His film lineup is formidable and this includes RAM TERI GANGA MAILI – a superhit movie.

I think this would have to be one of the top ten duets of the 70s of Lata ji and Rafi sahab. Very beautiful song with nice lyrics and lovely music. I really like Ravindra Jain’s music. Didn’t know this was his work. Thanks for sharing.
