Sang basanti ang basanti
Posted on: January 22, 2009
“Raja aur rank” (1968 ) is a movie that the present generation of movie watchers are not much familiar with, and that is for good reasons too. The movie was eminently forgettable with a flimsy story line. The only well known actor in this movie was Sanjeev Kumar, and he too was a newcomer to Bollywood.
The saving grace of this movie was its music. The music by Laxmikant Pyarelal was quite racy and the songs were extraordinary. In fact, songs of such quality deserved a better movie than this one. Since the movie had a forgettable story line hence its songs suffered as a result.
But what songs this movie had ! I have already posted one of them viz. “O phirki waali tu kal phir aana”. It was a hugely popular song, especially with kids like me.
“Sang basanti ang basanti” was another hugely popular somg with everyone including kids. But as a kid, I was not aware that these songs were from “Raja aur rank”. I posted “O phirkiwali” in this blog a few days back and it was only then that I became aware ( thanks to a reader’s feedback) that “Sang basanti ang basanti” was also from this movie.
The song was very popular during its time, but now it has been forgotten. The video of this song was not available in internet to the best of my knowledge. No need to despair. If the video is not available, it can be made available as long as one has the video of this movie. So now I have made this song available so that this song can be posted in this blog.
This song is special for this blog in another respect. This is the 600th song of this blog. The last 100 songs have come up in a record time of 17 days, beating the previous record of 19 days for the earlier 100 songs.
As usual, I am very thankful to my visitors and readers whose encouragement has enabled this blog to add 600 memorable songs in just 6 months. Hopefully the blog will grow from strength to strengh in the coming days.
So enjoy this 600th song of the blog, which is a rare song and has especially been uploaded to mark this occasion.
Song-Sang basanti, ang basanti (Raja aur Rank ) (1968 ) Singer-Rafi, Lata, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal
Lyrics
sang basanti ang basanti rang basanti chhaa gayaa
mastaanaa mausam aa gayaa
sang basanti ang basanti rang basanti chhaa gayaa

dharti kaa hai aanchal peelaa jhoome ambar neelaa-neelaa
sab rangon mein hai rangeelaa rang basanti
sang basanti ang basanti rang basanti chhaa gayaa
mastaanaa mausam aa gayaa
laharaaye ye teraa aanchal saawan ke jhoolon jaisaa
dil meraa le gayaa hai ye teraa roop gori sarson ke phoolon jaisaa
o laharaaye ye teraa aanchal saawan ke jhoolon jaisaa
dil meraa le gayaa hai ye teraa roop gori sarson ke phoolon jaisaa
jab dekhoon jee chaahe meraa naam basanti rakh doon teraa
chhodo-chhedo naa
ho ho
teri baaten raam duhaayi manwaa lootaa neend churaayi
sainyaa teri preet se aayi tang basanti
sang basanti ang basanti rang basanti chhaa gayaa
o mastaanaa mausam aa gayaa
ho sun lo deshwaasiyon
sun lo deshwaasiyon
aaj se is desh mein
chhotaa-badaa koyi na hogaa saare ek samaan honge
sun lo deshwaasiyon
koyi na hogaa bhookhaa-pyaasaa poori hogi sabki aashaa
ham hain raajaa
ho tum ho kaun nagar ke raaje chhotaa munh badi baat na saaje
jhoomo naacho gaao baaje sang basanti
sang basanti ang basanti rang basanti chhaa gayaa
o mastaanaa mausam aa gayaa

As the “1” is such an auspicious thing in India (you shaguns of 51, or 501 etc.), maybe your 601 song should be along the lines of “tum jiyo hazaron saal, saal mein din hon pachaas hazaar”…
although that may more often be a curse than a blessing..??

Wow..600…wonderful !!!
Congrats, Atul, and here’s to the next 400 to come up by 31st March 🙂
Just kidding…don’t want to put any pressure on you. It is not about quantity, it is about quality.
And this blog is of really high quality. Especially your style of presentation – and your typical sense of humour.
Atul, I know it is a lot of hard work but you are doing a fantastic job of it. have been here from day one – and will be here to support you all the way, (almost) every day if I can.
Not just me, you have got many more supporters now. And I am very happy to see this – this “labour of love” blog of yours has now got a distinct character and following of its own and is lighting up so many people’s days all over the world.
I am reminded of a famous ghazal by Majrooh Sultanpuri
Janib-e-manzil hum akele hi nikal pare, log aate gaye aur caravan banta gaya. … (I started out alone, people joined me and the caravan was formed).
All the best, my friend.

Oh, and I forgot to comment about the song. 🙂
Very nice song, thoroughly enjoyed listening to it just now.
Both Rafi and Lata sound very good in this song – and the beats to LP’s music are very very good.
The whole scene reminds me of “Bol gori bol tera kaun piya” from Milan. Also same year, same music director. Also a wonderful song (am not sure whether it is already posted here. If not, ….)

Thanks so much for taking the time to make and upload the video.
600 Wow! Congratulations on your hard work, this is set to grow and grow.
P.S. I am amazed also that many people (incl myself) already know most of the 600 you have posted. A rich heritage indeed.
