Shaam e gham ki kasam

Posted on: January 28, 2009

The movie called “Footpath” (1953) may not ring a bell, but this movie had some very nice music.

Khayyam ( was he around at that time too ?) has created a wonderful ghazal in this movie which is sung by Talat Mehmood.

“Shaam e gham ki kasam, aaj gamgen hain ham ” sung in Talat Mehmood’s voice has got to be an ultimate “chhaayaageet” category of song.

This song is picturised on Dilip Kumar. It must be one of the earliest ghazals sung by Talat Mehmood and I am sure this ghazal must have been a big rage in those days.

If the listener is in the right mood, listening to this song is a divine experience.

Song-Shaam e gham ki kasam (Footpath) (1953) Singer-Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Khayyam

Lyrics

Shaam e gham ki qasam aaj gamgeen hain ham
aa bhi jaa aa bhi jaa aaj mere sanam
shaam e gham ki qasam

dil pareshaan hai raat veeran hai
dekh jaake is tarah aaj tanha hain ham
shaam e gham ki kasam

chain kaisa jo pahloo me tu hi nahin
maar daale na dard e judaai kahin
rut haseen hai to kya chaandni hai to kya
chandni zulm hai aur judaai sitam
Shaam e gham ki qasam aaj gamgeen hain ham
aa bhi jaa aa bhi jaan aaj mere sanam
shaam e gham ki qasam

Ab to aa jaa ke ab raat bhi so gayi
zindagi gham ke sehraaon me kho gayi
Ab to aa jaa ke ab raat bhi so gayi
zindagi gham ke sehraaon me kho gayi
dhoondhti hai nazar tu kahan hai magar
dekhte dekhte aaya aankhon me dam
Shaam e gham ki qasam aaj gamgeen hain ham
aa bhi jaa aa bhi jaa aaj mere sanam

Indeed this was a popular song in its time.
A “chhayageet” song, for sure. 🙂
Very nice song – I like a lot of Talat songs. He had a silken voice.

Hi,

As you would have noticed, I’m your namesake. An on top of that, we greatly admire this very lovely ghazal by Talat. Although I’m a great fan of Talat and know a good number of his ghazals, this one had escaped my notice until very recently. Simply fantastic. It’s great that you have highlighted it and posted the lyrics. Talat’s vast repertoire of songs has captured the very many moods of different people and situations.

All the best!

Mukesh has indeed sung many for the thespian. The most popular would be ‘dil tadap tadap ke keh raha hai aa bhi jaa..’

In the last line ” abaya ankhon mein ???
Can someone confirm the correct word. Some say it is Gam, some say it is Dam and some say it is Nam.
In Talatsabs personal song book he has written Nam? But when he sings it it sounds like Dam or Gam ? Can someone clarify please.

Its ‘aaya aankho mein dum…’ i have sung this song umpteen times and not only you hear ‘dum’ from Talat saab’s voice in the antara but also this word fits the lyrics perfectly.
