Chhupona chhupona o pyaari sajaniya

Posted on: February 26, 2009

Here is another K L Saigal song from “My Sister” (1944). Lyricist is Pt. Bhushan whereas Pankaj Mullick composed the music.

In this song, K L Saigal thinks that his beloved is hiding behind the bushes, and he sings for her. Unknown to him, it is some baddies who are hiding behind the bushes.

The quality of singing is quite unbelievable, really. And the lyrics are so detailed. Those were the early days of playback singing, and songs like this made light of the technological inadequacies of those days.

Those days, the same song was recorded twice- once for the movie, and another time for the audio records. Most of the time, the same singer would sing in both the versions. But sometimes the two versions had different singers.

For instance, the movie version of this song was sung by K L Saigal, but the record version was released in the voice of Pankaj Mullick.

Video version (sung by K L Saigal)

audio version (sung by Pankaj Mullick)

Song-Chhupona chhupona o pyaari sajaniya (My Sister) (1944) Singer-K L Saigal, Lyrics-Pt Bhushan, MD-Pankaj Mullick

Lyrics

chhupo na chhupo na chhupo na
chhupo na chhupo na o pyaari sajaniyaa
hamase chhupo na chhupo na

baanki raseeli
baanki raseeli hamaari sajaniyaa
hamse chhupo na chhupo na
sajan se chhupo na o pyaari sajaniyaa
hamse chhupo na chhupo na

milne ko aaye hain
milne ko aaye hain aakar milo
nainon se nainaa milaakar milo
dekho bano na, na hamko banaao
roothi huyi ho to
haan roothi huyi ho to ab maan jaao
bholi sooratiyaa, bholi sooratiyaa dikhaa do mohaniyaa
hamse chhupo na chhupo na
sajan se chhupo na o pyaari sajaniyaa
hamse chhupo na chhupo na

kaisaa suhaanaa samay hai dilaaraa
bichhde huye
bichhde huye do dilon ka sahaaraa
kaisaa suhaanaa samay hai dilaaraa
bichhde huye do dilon ka sahaaraa
aise mein aao
aise mein aao zaraa gungunaati
soyi huyi kismaton ko jagaati
rum-jhum-jhum-jhum
rum-jhum bajaati rupahli painjaniyaa
hamse chhupo na chhupo na
sajan se chhupo na o pyaari

Today, January 18th is the death anniversary of the legendary singer-actor Kundan Lal Saigal. Since all known filmy and non-filmy Hindi songs sung by K L Saigal have already been discussed, I thought of bumping this song to remember him.

By the way, recently, I came across an audio clip of a Persian song sung by K L Saigal. Although I did not understand the meaning of this song, it was good enough for me to hear a heavenly rendition. It was only when I got hold of another audio clip of the same song with translations in Urdu and English that I really appreciated the song in its entirety. A beautiful poetry immaculately rendered by K L Saigal. Here is the audio clip :

Pankaj Mullick wanted to sing and record two of “My Sister” Songs “Ae qatibe taqdeer” and “Chhupona Chhupona” songs in his own voice, but K.L. Saigal would not allow any singer to playback for him. Hence Pankaj Mullick sang them for his own satisfaction and to prove Saigal Saheb that he is no ordinary singer.

Sir,
I regard the renderings of the two songs by PKM as one of the best and I would hear them untiringly again and again.

I wish the audio of PKM version was available here as indicated.
