Bhaag billi aayi re

It is a 50 year old song, and I had never heard this song before. And this is a nice kids song too.
Just a few days back, I discovered a nice 70 years old kids song and now this 50 year old kids song. I am sure there are many such forgotten gems lying there to be discovered.
This song is certainly a gem. What else can I say about a song that I loved listening to the very first time I heard it today. It is sung by Lata and Manna Dey. The lyrics is written by Shailendra and the music director is an unknown name viz Shailesh Mukherjee.
The song is picturised on Meena Kumari, Ashok Kumar and a few kids. It is nice to see Meena Kumari in a happy role. After all, this song is from 1958 and she had not yet contracted the tragedy bug till that time.
Song-Bhaag billi aayi re (Sawera) ( 1958) Singer-Manna Dey, Lata, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Shailesh Mukherjee
Lyrics
chhuppaa chhuppi, o chhuppi, aagad baaga jaayi re
choohe maamaa, o maamaa, bhaag, billii aayi re
chhuppaa chhuppi, o chhuppi, aagad baagad jaayi re
choohe maamaa, o maamaa, bhaag, billi aayi re
billi boli myaanv kaahe ghabraao
main to chali Kaashi gale mil jaao
billi boli myaanv kaahe ghabraao
main to chali Kaashi gale mil jaao
chhuppaa chhuppi, o chhuppi, aagad baagad jaayi re
choohe maamaa, o maamaa, bhaag, billi aayi re
lalalalalalal
baabambam
myaanv …
mat ham ko banaa ari mausi
tere dil mein zaroor hai kaalaa
mat ham ko banaa ari mausi
tere dil mein zaroor hai kaalaa
kisi aur ko dikhlaa jaake
ye jog ye kanthi maalaa
kisi aur ko dikhlaa jaake
ye jog ye kanthi maalaa
raam kaa naam lo aankh se kaam lo
raam kaa naam lo aankh se kaam lo
kal jo huaa thaa bhool jaao bhool jaao
chhuppaa chhuppi, o chhuppi, aagad baagad jaayi re
choohe maamaa, o maamaa, bhaag, billi aayi re
lalalala lalalalala
bambambambam
main to raam ki jogan apnaa
parlok sudhaaran jaaun
aakhir to budhaapaa thahraa
ab laut ke aaun na aaun
main to raam ki jogan apnaa
parlok sudhaaran jaaun
aakhir to budhaapaa thahraa
ab laut ke aaun na aaun
daant bhi tez tere panje bhi tez hain
daant bhi tez tere panje bhi tez hain
man mein wahi hai daav lage to lagaao
chhuppaa chhuppi, o chhuppi, aagad baagad jaayi re
choohe maamaa, o maamaa, bhaag, billi aayi re
billi boli myaanv kaahe ghabraao
main to chali kaashi gale mil jaao
lalalalala lalalala
bambambabam

I have never heard this lovely song !!!
Thanks Atul for coming up with such gems.
It is very humbling – and very satisfying at the same time – to know that there are so many gems out there that are still unknown to me.
Makes me look forward a lot to learning new songs all the time.

Atul, my friends and I used to sing this song as children, but I didn’t know the words properly then, nor did I know that it was a film song. You just brought back my childhood. I don’t think I have ever heard it in all these years since then. Really delightful!
