Kishore Kumar and Mumtaz were signed up for a movie called “Pyaar Deewaana” in 1966 when both were relatively small time players in Bollywood scheme of things. The makers of the movie were equally small time players who had signed up small time artists for other tasks viz lyrics writing, music direction etc too and the shooting of this movie progressed at snail’s pace.
Recording of songs kept “pace” with the progress of the movie. The first song to be sung by Kishore Kumar on screen was recorded not in Kishore Kumar’s voice, but in Rafi’s voice, and that way, the music director of this movie, someone called Lata Asar Sattar joined the select club of O P Nayyar and Shankar Jaikishan who had made Kishore Kumar lip sync in the voice of Rafi.
A few years more in the making, and what did we find ? Both Kishore Kumar and Mumtaz hit big time- Kishore Kumar as the hottest male playback singer, and Mumtaz as the hottest lead actress.
That changed matters and from then onwards, Kishore Kumar sang the other songs of the movie.
Here is a duet sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle and picturised on the lead pair. In the six yeras that this movie was in the making, Kishore Kumar had aged from a man in his thirtees to a middle aged man in his forties. Mumtaz on the other hand, had turned into a ravishing beauty during this period.
Here is this song which is a forgotten song, but an interesting song nevertheless. This song was written by Asad Bhopali.
Incidentally, I find the music interesting. One can find pieces of music that remind you of the music styles from various other music directors viz S D Burman, O P Nayyar, Shankar Jaikishan, Laxmikant Pyarelal, R D Burman etc.
PS-Now I have come to know that Lala Asar Sattar is not one person but three persongs. In other words, Lala, Asar and Sattar were a trio of music composers.
