Teri aankhon ke siwa duniya mein rakha kya hai

I just realised that “aankh”( eyes) played a very important role in the songs created by Madan Mohan. Just name the movie, and chances are there will be a very well known “aankh” song in that Madan Mohan, be it “Anpadh” or “Mera Saaya” or any other movie.
Here is an “aankh” song from “Chirag” (1969). Majrooh Sultanpuri wrote the song.
This song in fact has at least two versions. There is one solo Lata version and then there is a Rafi version. Both versions are just out of this world.

Song-Teri aankhon ke siwa duniya me rakha kya hai (Chirag) (1969) Singer-Lata/Rafi, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Madan Mohan
Lyrics
Lata version
————————————–
teri aankhon ke siwaa duniyaa mein rakkhaa kyaa hai
teri aankhon ke siwaa duniyaa mein rakkhaa kyaa hai
ye uthen subah chale, ye jhuken shaam dhale
meraa jeenaa meraa marnaa inhin palkon ke tale
teri aankhon ke siwaa duniyaa mein rakkhaa kyaa hai
ye hon kahin inkaa saayaa mere dil se jaataa nahin
inke siwaa ab to kuchh bhi nazar mujhko aataa nahin
ye hon kahin inkaa saayaa mere dil se jaataa nahin
ye uthen subah chale, ye jhuken shaam dhale
meraa jeenaa meraa marnaa inhin palkon ke tale
teri aankhon ke siwaa duniyaa mein rakkhaa kyaa hai
aaa
thokar jahaan maine khaayi inhone pukaaraa mujhe
ye hamsafar hain to kaafi hai inkaa sahaaraa mujhe
thokar jahaan maine khaayi inhone pukaaraa mujhe
ye uthen subah chale, ye jhuken shaam dhale
meraa jeenaa meraa marnaa inhin palkon ke tale
teri aankhon ke siwaa duniyaa mein rakkhaa kyaa hai
teri aankhon ke siwaa duniyaa mein rakkhaa kyaa hai

Rafi-Lata version
teri aankhon ke siwaa duniyaa mein rakkhaa kyaa hai
teri aankhon ke siwaa duniyaa mein rakkhaa kyaa hai
ye uthen subah chale, ye jhuken shaam dhale
meraa jeenaa meraa marnaa inhin palkon ke tale
teri aankhon ke siwaa duniyaa mein rakkhaa kyaa hai
palkon ki galiyon mein chehre bahaaron ke hanste huye
hain mere khwaabon ke kyaa-kyaa nagar inmen baste huye
ho
palkon ki galiyon mein chehre bahaaron ke hanste huye
ye uthen subah chale, ye jhuken shaam dhale
meraa jeenaa meraa marnaa inhin palkon ke tale
teri aankhon ke siwaa duniyaa mein rakkhaa kyaa hai
inmen mere aanewaale zamaane ki tasweer hai
chaahat ke kaajal se likhi huyi meri taqdeer hai
ho
inmen mere aanewaale zamaane ki tasweer hai
ye uthen subah chale, ye jhuken shaam dhale
meraa jeenaa meraa marnaa inhin palkon ke tale
teri aankhon ke siwaa duniyaa mein rakkhaa kyaa hai
ye hon kahin inkaa saayaa mere dil se jaataa nahin
inke siwaa ab to kuchh bhi nazar mujhko aataa nahin
ye hon kahin inkaa saayaa mere dil se jaataa nahin
ye uthen subah chale, ye jhuken shaam dhale
meraa jeenaa meraa marnaa inhin palkon ke tale
teri aankhon ke siwaa duniyaa mein rakkhaa kyaa hai

I did not know there was a phrase borrowed from that Faiz nazm. Thanks for that info, Bawa. I have heard that nazm a few times.
Coming to “teri ankhon..”, I like this song very much. Both versions.
Come to think of it, I like almost all songs picturised on Sunil Dutt. I don’t know why – was it that the songs were good songs or that they just seemed to suit him very well ? Whatever it is, I like them.

Hi Atul:
I wholeheartedly agree with you about the role of Aankhen, Nigahen, Nain,or Nazar in Madan Mohan’s songs. In fact, it prompted me to create a series of compilations on Youtube called Madan Mohan and Eyes. If you don’t mind, I would like to give a link to Part 1 of that series:

What a composition & singing !!
Madan Mohan – the aristocratic composer, must have had a sharp ear for the EYES. He has composed nearly 30 memorable songs with Eyes in the center of the mukhda of the song lyrics. Teri aankho ke siwa … from ”Chiraag” is one of the most difficult compositions by him sung by Rafi Sahab with so much of feel, soul & gusto and that too effortlessly. It’s a kind of song that looks so easy to sing but I can bet, it’s not that easy when attempted. The notations are too varied & difficult.
Majrooh Sahab has penned some awesome poetry here with beauty of phrases like ”palkon ke tale”, ”palkon ki galiya”, ”chehre bahaaron ke”, ”khawaabon ke nagar”, ”chaahat ka kaajal”, etc.
Hardly a video of this song is available on Youtube with its intact prelude. I like every bit of instrumentation here by MM & the prelude is always an intro or mirror of the mastery by any master. So enjoy its audio version with complete prelude….

The phrase “teri ankhon ke siwa duniya mein rakha kay hai” is taken fom the famous nazm by Faiz Ahmed Faiz “Mujhse pehli si mohabbat mere mehboob na mang”.
Of course, not as plagiarism but as a homage, and it is wonderful to see how the idea has spun-off into another, entirely different and beautiful song by M Sultanpuri.
