Saaranga teri yaad mein

Posted on: April 3, 2009

The first time I listened to this song was in 1975 at about 6-30 pm in the evening in Vividh Bharati.

I very clearly remembered the name of the movie (Saranga) as well as that of the music director (Sardar Malik). This Mukesh song was clearly an old song and thus not my cup of tea, but those days I was trying hard to force myself to like older songs, without much conviction though. I had great difficulty understanding how these old songs could be regarded so highly by oldtimers and media. To my mind, these songs were just no match to the new songs ( Kishore Kumar- R D Burman kind) that I loved to listen to.

Of course, much water has flown in all the rivers of the world since those days, and I have learnt by now not make odious comparisons .

Here is that title song from “Saranga” (1960). It is written by Bharat Vyas, and it was picturised on Sudesh Kumar ( Villain of later years).

Song-Saranga teri yaad mein (Saarangaa) (1960) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Bharat Vyas, MD-Sardar Malik

Lyrics

Saranga teri yaad me
Saranga teri yaad me
nain huye bechain
ho Saranga teri yaad me
nain huye bechain
ho madhur tumhaare milan bina
din katate nahin rain
O saaranga teri yaad me

wo ambuvaa ka jhoolnaa, wo peepal ki chhaanv
wo ambuvaa ka jhoolnaa, wo peepal ki chhaanv
ghoonghat mein jab chaand tha, mehandi lagi thi paanv
aaj ujadke rah gayaa
aaj ujadke rah gayaa
wo sapnon kaa gaanv,
O Saranga teri yaad me
nain huye bechain
ho madhur tumhaare milan bina
din katate nahin rain
O saaranga teri yaad me

sang tumhaare do ghadi, beet gaye jo pal
sang tumhaare do ghadi, beet gaye jo pal
jal bharke mere nain mein, aaj huye ojhal
sukh leke dukh de gayin
sukh leke dukh de gayin
do ankhiyaan chanchal,
O Saranga teri yaad me
nain huye bechain
ho madhur tumhaare milan bina
din katate nahin rain
O saaranga teri yaad me

You know, Atul, I fully understand your comment about these songs being liked by oldtimers, since I have now become an oldtimer myself! I remember the summer of ’61, singing this song, and my mother herself liked it so much that she too used to hum it. Was there a version by Lata also? I will only say this, they don’t make such beautiful songs any more.

I think there was one Rafi version of this song too.

The actress is Jayashree Gadkar. Yes Mohammad Rafi has sung this song in a different tune. I have a short audio of that song, only two lines. Don’t know whether it is that much or more, Atul if you want kindly revert.

For Mally, trying to give a brief translation with pathos:

Saranga! in your passion (remembering you)
My eyes have become restless
Without your merry (madhur) acquaintance
My days and nights come to a halt.

The fluttering/waiving of Mango (tree)
The shadow of Peepal (tree)
when you (chand) were behind the ghoonghat
When your feet had Mehandi on it
today all this has become barren
(sigh!) That village of our dreams

Those few moments with you
that i spent briskly
now dampen my eyes
and fall with tears
taking relief and are giving grief
those two twinkling eyes

To me it seems, the word “Saranga’ means doe(Female deer). The lover remebering his doe eyed lover due to which she looked so beautiful and so attrective. Apparently, she left him, leaving behind ,those old memories of their meetings in passion of love- under the shade of mango and peeple trees. Recollecting those moments of deep love dampens his eyes and thus sings the approppriately worded song.
