ABCD chhodo nainon se naina jodo

Posted on: April 5, 2009

I have noticed that Bollywood movie offers songs for all occasions and all occupations. For example, beggars, band parties of weddings etc have been using appropriate songs for decades.

Even common people of all ages have songs that often seem tailormade for their purposes. I have already mentioned the fact that there are songs addressed to most common names of girls viz Rekha, Radha, Julie,Reena etc which come handy for teenage boys. Similarly, there are songs that seem to be addressed to some common names of boys.

And the most common such name appears to be Raja. In other words, Raja, the regular visitor of this blog, is favoured rather more than any other names by Bollywood lyricists (especially Anand Bakshi), when it comes to writing songs addressed to a boy.

In many old songs, one finds very complicated words being used to express feelings of characters who otherwise may not even have such words in their vocabularies. Thus we have simple looking folks using words in songs that could well have come out of Oxford Urdu dictionary (if any such dictionary exists).

So it always comes as a refreshing change when a song uses words that a character may actually use in his/her vocabularies. Here is just the kind of song from “Raja Jani”. The situation is interesting. Dharmendra is teaching English to Hema Malini, but she finds the lesson boring. When she cannot take any more of his dull lessons, she breaks into this cute song.

I can visualise Raja being asked to teach English to a girl and Raja teaching her in all seriousness, only to be interrupted by the girl ( preferably Nutan, Raja’s favourite) to come up with such a song. In fact, I recall that there was a similar situation in “Dilli ka thug” (1959) and there too, we had a cute song “C A T cat, cat maane billi” there. In that song though, the roles were reversed and it was Nutan who was teaching English to Kishore Kumar and it was Kishore Kumar who was feeling confused by her English lessons.

So here is this cute song from “Raja Jani”.

Another example could be from Anpadh. But the song picturised on Mohan Choti “Sikander Ne Porus Se Ki Thi Ladayee To Main Kya Karoon, Jo PUT Put Hai To BUT But hai”.

Coming to Raja Jani, other songs which I have recalled are

1. Jani O Jani Jaldee Se Aaja Milja Aake Beeti Jaye…(played
during the cast being shown)
2. Kitna Maja A Raha Hai (Prem Chopra & Hema Malini)
3. Duniya Ka Mela Mele Mein Ladki, Ladki Akelee Shanno…

I had been a fan of Dharmendra & Hema Malini and did not have interest in watching movies. Though collecting songs of all ages is my hobby. TV is only to watch Cricket, for me. Listening Radio (especially Ceylon) and FM Gold, Delhi is my passion. I am Software Developer and Trainer in a Govt. Department and used to travel the whole Southern India, Maharashtra, Northern India in connection with training progression. Another obsession is for Instrumentals. I used to collect them also.

Ha ha ha.
Pity I never got to teach Nutan anything.
But, on my behalf, Sunil Dutt did – “saawan ka maheena”.

As with Shammi and Rajesh movies, I struggled to see Nutan movies of later years. I wanted to remember her as the Nutan of Paying Guest or Dil Hi To Hai or Baarish or even Milan.

This ABCD song was quite popular in its time. Reminds me of another song “A for Apple, B for Baby” from Sadhu Aur Shaitan. Cute song.
