Pyaar mein milna sanam

One should not compare songs and their picturisations, but sometimes movie makers force it on audiences by their blatant inspirations.
It looks like this song and its picturisation is almost a frame by frame copy of the wonderful song “o raat ke musaafir” from “Miss Mary”. It is a pity, because otherwise this song, when not subjected to such comparisons, is a good song on its own. I guess that it is the picturisation that is to be blamed, not the song itself.
This song is sung by Lata and Subir Sen. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist and Vasant Desai composed the music. This song was picturised on Raj Kumar and Meena Kumari , and this may certainly sent shivers down the spines of many spectators, since the two of the became renowned for playing drunkard husband and his long suffering wife, respectively in several movies. Hopefully this movie, where they came together for the first time (I think) was not one such movies. Incidentally “Ardhaangini” means Wife in Sanskrit.
Song-Pyaar me milna sanam (Ardhaangini) (1959) Singers-Subir Sen, Lata, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Vasant Desai
Lyrics
ho ho
aa aa aa ho
pyaar mein milna sanam hota hai taqdeer se
ho achchi rahengi tanhaayion me baaten teri tasweer se
ho pyaar mein
haale dil kahenge na ham
pyaar hai to kaahe ka gham
pyaar hi me gham bhi to hain
saath tere ham bhi to hain
phir bhi na jaane rukti nahin dhadkan kisi tadbeer se
ho pyaar mein
aaa
kya karen
kya karen jo mil na saken
phool kya jo khil na sake
band ho jo raahen meri
thaam ke chalo baanhen meri
tumko kasam hai baandho na hamko itni haseen zanjeer se
ho pyaar mein
chal na jaaye jaadoo kahin
ishq hai hansi to nahi
ho chal na jaaye jaadoo kahin
ishq hai hansi to nahi
kaampte hain mere qadam
ho kaampte hain mere qadam
jaao nahin rokenge ham
jaayen kahaan
jaayen kahaan
jaayen kahaan jo phirte hai
ghaayal hoke sanam tere teer se
ho pyaar mein milna sanam hota hai taqdeer se
ho achchi rahengi tanhaayion me baaten teri tasweer se
ho pyaar mein

I love this song. I was just humming it, came here and found it too. I don’t remember much about this movie, since I saw it around ’62 or ’63, but I do remember that it was about a manhoos stree, and she gets engaged to Raaj Kumar, but the engagement is broken off for some reason. Anyway, they do get together in the end, if my memory serves me right. This movie was when I got into the Raaj Kumar phase – Dil Apna aur Preet parai, Waqt, Phool Baney Angaarey, and so on. I just love Subir Sen’s voice in this song.
Thanks, Atul!
