When it comes to “maajhi” songs, one thinks of S D Burman.Here is an outstanding Majhi song, but it is by another music director who in fact was making his debut as a music director in this movie.
This movie is “Saudaagar”(1973) which was a Rajshree productions movie and it did not do much at the box office, mainly because the moviegoers those days were not matured enough to appreciate movies which were non mainstream in nature.
I also find it interesting that Ravindra Jain, the debutant music director, made a mark for himself despite not using the voices of the legendary singers of those days much. Ravindra Jain used the voices of Lata, Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Manna Dey only in his first three movies, and then he totally dispensed with these voices and still came up with memorable music.
The music of this movie, now I am coming to realise, was just outstanding.
On the few occasions where he used the legendary singers, these singers came up with memorable songs. On the last few days, I have posted memorable songs of “saudagar” sung by Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle and Lata. Here is a song sung by Manna Dey. This is the only time Ravindra Jain used the voice of Manna Dey, and this song must go down as one of the most memorable Maajhi songs of all time in Bollywood music.
Ravindra Jain used the voices of legendary singers in “Saudaagar” and then in “Chor Machhaye Shor”, and what remarkable songs we had in both these movies.This shows that legends, if used properly were worth their weight in gold. And Ravindra Jain certainly utilised their voices, (however sparingly) very well.

He had to take Lata for RK’s Ram teri ganga maili and Henna becuase of RK banner’s close association with her!

what a coincidence! today i saw this song on ‘timesnow.tv’ in their “total recall” programme which featured ‘manna dey’
