Hullo Atuldom

“Mahaan” (1983) was a film that released in my teenage years & released in the summer holidays of 1983. I have seen it then & a number of times after that. It was produced by Satyanarayana & A. Suryanarayana; directed by S. Ramanathan. Anjaan wrote the songs which were tuned by R.D. Burman. Waheeda Rehman, Amitabh Bachchan, Amjad Khan, Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Shakti Kapoor, Ashok Kumar, Mac Mohan, Urmila Bhatt, Mukri, Nandita Thakur, Aruna Irani, Sujit Kumar etc. etc. & Kadar Khan were the actors/ stars in the film. The film was the official remake of the Kannada film ‘Shankar Guru’ (1978).

The film was the story of a lawyer (father Amitabh) who has an artist/ painter wife (Waheeda Rehman). He has a friend (Amjad Khan) who is sent to jail for possession of drugs by the lawyer with the intention that the friend will get reformed. The friend comes out with revenge in mind, kills his business associate (Sujit Kumar) & frames the lawyer. This forces the lawyer to run to escape arrest, but in the process he is separated from his wife who is pregnant at the time. She gives birth to twins but isn’t aware of it i.e. she doesn’t know that one of the twin has been handed over to a lady who has given birth to a still-born for the 3rd time. The boys grow up to be cop & dramatist (Nautanki should be the right word here), fall in love with beautiful girls, land up in Kathmandu. Their roads cross at the palace of their father who has taken refuge there & is the guardian of one of the beauties. The family comes together after all complications are resolved.

The film had seven songs with Jidhar dekhoon teri tasweer nazar aati hai being a multi-version song. Both the versions were in male voices of Kishore Kumar & Amitabh Bachchan. Amit Kumar, Asha Bhonsle & RD Burman were the other playback singers in the film. The following are the songs of the film are on the blog :_

Song Date of post Remarks
Jidhar dekhoon teri tasweer nazar aati hai 22 September 2010 Multiple version song
Aadhi baat ho chuki tu aadhi baat kar le 22 September 2020 (post by Avinashji, part of BTYC)
Har chhori raani yahaan har chhora raaja 11 October 2022

Today we are having the next song on the occasion of the 11th death anniversary of S. Ramanathan. He began as an assistant director in the 1950s and he became a director from 1958. He went on to direct & produce many Kannada films till 1971/72 when he directed his first Hindi film ‘Bombay To Goa’. He went on to make 10 more films in Hindi.

Today’s song is the pre-climax song where the two brothers are dancing around in a Gym owned by Amjad Khan. The family have all reached there, one after the other. I have seen the film a number of times but I can’t remember how the ladies landed there. (need to see the film again). The song is in the voices of Kishore Kumar & Amit Kumar.

Mukesh and his Actors – 01
——————————————-

Well, the Halley’s comet is back on the blog.
So much so that it did not feature in nearly two centuries of latest posts. Reasons? Aren’t they cliches already on the blog?
Incidentally, speaking of the real macro universe comet itself, it last appeared in 1986 and is expected to pass by the pale blue dot next in July 2061. Second week of December this year, it reached the farthest point from the sun known as aphelion, thus beginning its journey towards the inner solar system.

So, the date for sighting arguably the most famous comet is set for July 2061 for earthlings alive then.

Coming back to the blog, we start with a new series Mukesh and his Actors. This has been a task which I had been contemplating for years and remained a non-starter mainly because I could not decide as to which actor, I should take up for the debut post.

Before we start with the post itself and regarding my infrequent appearances on the blog, I thought it would be politic to have a recap of the statistics of my 3 ongoing series on Mukesh. So here is a summary of the articles posted so far.

Series No. of Posts
Mukesh and his Composers 30
Mukesh and his Co-Singers 9
NFS of Mukesh 3
Mukesh and his Actors 1

A kind of a geometric sequence it is. With dwindling number of Mukesh’s songs to be posted, I don’t think the numbers will change drastically, but let’s see how frequent my appearances occur in the near future. 😊

To take up an actor for this debut post, Raj Kapoor, of course is the most obvious choice. But the sheer numbers and the preparation of a long table would consume a lot of time and thus it was also a reason that I kept procrastinating the series.

Also, I would have personally loved to start the series with Motilal, the man responsible for bringing Mukesh to the fore of cinema world. But all the songs rendered by Mukesh for his discoverer remain covered on the blog.

Mukesh lent his voice to Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Ashok Kumar, Ajit, Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, Sunil Dutt, Manoj Kumar, Pradeep Kumar, Rajendra Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Raj Kumar, Feroz Khan, Mehmood, Vinod Khanna and a host of other actors. However, it is extremely difficult to identify the next profound actor for whom Mukesh gave playback. I know many fans would place Manoj Kumar, next on the list.

A strong reason for not having a profound list could be because Mukesh’s numbers for other actors are quite few. Another basis is the fact of immense popularity of the songs that Mukesh sang. So, whether it was well-known or unknown actors, the voice of Mukesh has stood the test of time. Some actors such as Sudesh Kumar in Saranga 1961 remain in active memory only because of the playback that Mukesh rendered.

As I have said earlier, almost all songs of Motilal have been covered on the blog. I say almost as there is always a hope that some or the other untraced/forgotten song may crop up anytime. Quite a few songs of Mukesh remain untraced/unavailable even though there is information available on them.

Since this is a debut post on the series, I thought it would be appropriate to include a table of songs sung by Mukesh for Motilal, notwithstanding the fact that all are already covered on the blog.
So here is a table with a disclaimer in the form of a (#) sign besides the title and its description at the bottom of the table.

# Due to unavailability of adequate information and video proofs, it is not known for sure if Mukesh provided playback for Motilal for all the songs in the above table. Motilal’s presence in the aforesaid films as an actor is however well established.
* Multiple version song
** Not included in the film

There are heroes, heroines, stars, superstars etc. and then there are Actors.
Actors, in their true sense are very few. Motilal was one such popular and natural Actor.
His very presence on the screen was acting in itself. Such was the aura he carried on the screen.

The story of how he brought Mukesh into the world of cinema is well documented on the blog and elsewhere. For two decades, Mukesh gave playback to about 26 odd songs for Motilal.

More than 95% of all the songs are from the first decade of Mukesh’s life as actor and playback singer. We all know the struggles of Mukesh as an actor, composer, producer and ultimately the popularity he gained as a playback singer.

In the above table, even though Moorthi was released before Pehli Nazar, it was the fame that the solo from Pehli Nazar that installed Mukesh on the pedestal of playback popularity. The legendary Kudan Lal Saigal stating that he does not remember singing the song is not a piece of recorded history. But, given the style and utmost facsimile of rendering it should not be surprising if Saigal saab had indeed quoted such a thing. I have often stated that this will remain the biggest compliment that Mukesh ever received in his career.

Moving on, I have already discussed the immense popularity of the triad from Moorthi at S. No 1 It is said that in those days people used to foregather outside hotels etc. to listen to this song.
Mukesh’s duet with Naseem Akhtar at S. No 6 is a personal favourite of mine. The confidence in the voice of Nassem Akhtar while she conveys her feelings and the sort of timid responses from a newcomer to singing makes up for interesting listening.

Do Dil (1947) starring Suraiya had 3 each solos and duets by Mukesh.

Number 10 is a beautiful sad duet, which Mukesh mastered in his later years.

Lekh (1949) had 2 beautiful duets and 1 sad solo. When I first got smitten to the voice of Mukesh in late eighties, I remember running from one cassette shop to another in search of the solo. Ultimately, I had to get it recorded and copied on a blank cassette paying a hefty amount. Those were the days when the joy of eventually possessing a favourite song and playing multiple times knew no bounds.

I always visualize Dev Anand on the screen for the duet at S. No 14. This could be because of the popular duet of Mukesh with the same Suraiya in Vidya 1948. 😊

However, there was no Dev Anand in Lekh (1949) and it must have been pictured on Motilal himself.
The other duet from Lekh with Asha Bhosale is historically important as it was the first time that the two singers came together.

The next two films Hamaari Beti and Hanste Aansoo released in 1950 had a total of 9 songs with various co-singers. Many of these songs are also immensely popular to this day. For multiple version song at 18, I request readers to see the comment of our Nitin ji on the blog. So very apt.

Thereafter, it was only after 6 years that Mukesh sang his well-known drunkard song in Jaagte Raho (1956) for Motilal. This was the last playback of Mukesh for the actor.

At 27, I have retained the soulful rendition Zindagi khwaab hai, tha hamen bhi pata, even though it was not part of the released film and obviously not picturized on Motilal. The other song of this movie was Mukesh’s duet with Lata and was picturized and sung for Moti Sagar in the film.

The solo, it is said was specially created and dedicated as a homage by Mukesh to Motilal who passed away before the film was released. It is also said that Mukesh himself scored the music for the particular song and never took credit for it. It was Mukesh sincerely thanking Motilal from the bottom of his heart for everything that Motilal meant to him both in his personal life as well as professional career.
The lines,

chandd din thhaa basera hamaara yahaan
ham bhi mehmaan thhey
ghar toh uss paar thhaa

gives me goosebumps every time, I listen to them for the genuine and honest intensity of the rendering.

Moving ahead, I have a two-page detailed filmography of Motilal collected from a Hindi or Marathi magazine decades back. Incidentally, the author of the article is our own Harish ji, the compiler of Mukesh Geet Kosh. However, I am unable to find any details on the singers who have given playback for Motilal or the songs that he may have himself sung as he mainly worked in the era where playback was slowly evolving. Even for most of the songs in the above table, videos are not available. Readers can also associate that most of these numbers have been unearthed by our Sudhir ji for our listening pleasure. However, even his posts are sans videos of the songs as they are simply not available/difficult to trace or lost forever.

I request readers to provide any information that they may have regarding the songs of Motilal not only for Mukesh but for other playback singers as well.

I have already shared the two-page article/filmography of Motilal on various whatsapp groups. If anyone else is interested I will be more than happy to share.

With this, I end my chapter on Mukesh songs for Motilal, however the post is incomplete as a song has to be featured. So, lets move on.

Mukesh in his early years gave playback for famous singers like Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar etc. But these numbers are few and all are already covered on the blog.

To make a debut on the series, I was long contemplating Amitabh Bachchan for whom Mukesh sang a few songs including immensely popular ones from Kabhi Kabhi.

However, during the contemplating period, all songs on Big B were slowly covered on the blog and I was left with none.
So, what am I up to in this post? Well read on.

Before we come to the song for the post, it would be prudent to again have a glance at all the songs that Mukesh rendered for Big B and so here is the detailed table.

MUKESH’s playback for AMITABH BACHCHAN
S. No Name of song Movie (Year of release) Co-singer if any Composer Lyricist
1 Ib tum paas na aanaa Raaste ka Patthar (1972) Asha Bhonsle Laxmikant Pyarelal Anand Bakshi
2 Main har dum kisi ko dhoondhta hoon Raaste ka Patthar (1972) Asha Bhonsle Laxmikant Pyarelal Anand Bakshi
3 Raaste kaa patthar kismat ne mujhe Raaste ka Patthar (1972) Laxmikant Pyarelal Anand Bakshi
4 Behna o behna teri doli Adalat (1976) Kalyanji Anandji Gulshan Bawra
5 Hamka aisa waisa naa samjho Adalat (1976) Amitabh Bachchan Kalyanji Anandji Gulshan Bawra
6 Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein * Kabhi Kabhie (1976) Khayyam Sahir Ludhianvi
7 Main pal do pal kaa shaayar * Kabhi Kabhie (1976) Khayyam Sahir Ludhianvi

*Multiple version song

So, in all, there are only 3 films with 7 songs. 6 and 7 are multiple version songs which feature Mukesh. So, the count can be considered as 9 also.
The first of the 3 films, Raaste ka Patthar (1972) had two duets with Asha Bhosale and one popular solo which incidentally was a title song.
Adalat 1976 had a solo and another song with Big B himself rendering a few words thus making it a virtual duet.
Mukesh’s duet with Amitabh Bachchan! Now, that’s some kind of a song.

Coming to the last film of the duo, (Kabhi Kabhi, 1976), seriously, what’s the first thing that comes to mind when one comes across this film.
Of course, apart from the moment doe-eyed Rakhee raises her head with her lustrous hair strewn across her left shoulder whilst Big B is rendering Main Pal Do Pal Ka Shaayar on the stage
Or her satiny hair descending on the face of Big B whilst Mukesh is singing

yeh gesuon ki ghani chhaaon hain meri khaatir

indeed, it’s the songs that Mukesh rendered for Big B for the film that spontaneously come to the mind.
Mukesh’s playback perfectly matched the baritone voice of Amitabh dialogue delivery to the T.

Such was the impact of the Mighty Mukesh’s voice right from Motilal to Amitabh Bachchan. From 1940, when he sang for himself on screen to 1976, the year he passed away, the golden voice mattered.

Mukesh also won his fourth and last Filmfare award for the title song of this film.

Finally, coming to the song for the post itself, it is not lip-synced by Amitabh Bachchan but he very well features in the song along with Sharmila Tagore. This aspect is known as some video links on YouTube are available albeit containing snippets of the song. It appears to me that the song features as some sort of refrain throughout the movie. I request knowledge readers to throw more light of this song in the film.

The film is ‘Faraar’ (1975) produced by Alankar Chitra and directed by Shanker Mukherjee. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Sharmila Tagore, Sanjeev Kumar et.al. the actor on the screen singing Mukesh’s solo has been identified by our Prakash ji as probably Kishore Namit Kapoor.

The complete audio of the song is available, but strangely the video is difficult to trace on the net. Prakash ji remembers theatre version of the film containing the full video of the song. I have requested our Sudhir ji also to help. I thank our Sadanand ji who brought to my notice that this song was yet to feature on the blog and thus “reserving” it for my new series.

12 posts of mine have appeared on the blog this year, averaging a post a month. Though the number is less, its better off compared to the paltry 3 and 2 in 2021 and 22 respectively.

I intend to increase the number in the coming year by having shorter writeups. 😊.

I take this opportunity to wish the editors, contributors and all readers A very happy and prosperous New Year 2024

May we all continue to enjoy and multiply our mirth of songs and films on the blog.

[Author’s Note: The table containing Mukesh’s songs for Motilal is already with the disclaimer. When this list was shared on a whatsapp group, Mr. Param Arunachalam ji was kind enough to respond that there are a few more Motilal films containing Mukesh’s songs but he too is not sure if they were indeed playback for Motilal. Some examples cited by him are “Arshon Pe Sitara Hai” (‘Beete Din’, 1947), “Na Na Tum Hampe Hanso Na Piya” (‘Mera Munna’, 1948), a couple of songs from ‘Sartaj’ 1950 etc.

I have based my list on the latest edition of Mukesh Geet Kosh (Vol 2) by Shri Harish Raghuwanshi ji. I did not get the list re-confirmed by him due to his health. Thus, this post will probably remain a page under construction for a long time as we seek more and definite info from knowledgeable readers. As and when more info is available, details will be updated. An honest, serious and sincere effort has been made to kickstart this important series with an apt debut of Mukesh’s song for his mentor Motilal. I request readers to acknowledge the difficulties in having a correct and complete list and help us in making it more accurate. — Mahesh]

There is a saying in Hindi – भगवान जब देता है,तो छप्पर फाड़कर देता है. This saying is used in the context of unexpected gains, not necessarily in terms of monetary gains but in any form. For example, this saying applies to a farmer who gets a bumper crop in the backdrop of the loss of crops due to drought or floods in the preceding one or two years. This saying also applies to Sujoy Ghosh when his low budget film, ‘Kahaani’ (2012) earned a bumper box office collections after his preceding two films – ‘Home Delivery’ (2005) and ‘Alladdin’ (2009) failed at the box office.

‘Kahaani’ (2012) is a suspense thriller which is jointly produced by Jayantilal Gada, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and Sujoy Ghosh who also directs the film. Vidya Balan plays the lead role with supporting actors consisting of Parambrata Chatterjee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Indraneil Sengupta, Saswata Chatterjee, Dhritiman Chatterjee, Darshan Jariwala, Masood Akhtar etc. In this film, Amitabh Bachchan gives voice-over commentary and also renders a Bangla song. The film was majorly shot on locations in Kolkata.

Sujoy Ghosh, in an interview which appeared on April 27, 2012, in ‘Hindustan Times’ revealed that with his two flop films behind him, he faced a host of problems during the planning stage of ‘Kahaani’ (2012). Apart from finding the financiers, getting the actress for the lead role of a pregnant woman who had appear as such throughout the film was a real challenge. Vidya Balan who first had some apprehension, agreed to do this role only after reading the entire script. Except Nawazuddin Siddique, he had no luck in getting male actors from Bollywood to do a couple of important roles in the film. So, he decided to rope in a few unknown actors from Kolkata. Even after the completion of the film’s shooting, Sujoy Ghosh was not sure of its box office success.

The story of the film is given below in details:

A poisonous gas attack in a bogie of Kolkata Metro train kills all the occupants. About two years later, a pregnant Vidya Bagchi (Vidya Balan), a software engineer, travels from London to Kolkata on the eve of Durga Pooja in search of her husband, Arnab Bagchi (Indraneil Sengupta). He is a software engineer who came from London on an assignment with National Data Centre (NDC). He has been missing in Kolkata for about two weeks. After landing, she goes straight to the police station. While the police take their own time to investigate her missing husband, it is newly recruited sub-Inspector, Rana (Parambrata Chatterjee) who helps Vidya in the investigation, sometimes without authorisation.

On checking, Vidya comes to know that no employee with her husband’s name has ever worked in NDC. A further talk with the CEO of NDC, Agnes D’Mello (Colleen Blanche) reveals that her husband’s face resembles a former employee, Milan Damji (Indraneil Sengupta). However, Milan Damji has been missing for the last 2 years since a CBI team had come to interrogate him. Agnes D’Mello has some information about Milan Damji which she has promised to pass on to Vidya. However, Agnes is killed in her house by Bob Biswas (Saswata Chatterjee), a contract killer suspected to be working for Milan Damji.

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) which has also been investigating the Kolkata Metro attack under Deputy Inspector General, A Khan (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) comes into picture. Khan advises against Vidya doing further investigation on Milan Damji who is suspected to be responsible for poisonous gas attack in Kolkata Metro as he is investigating the matter. But Vidya tells Khan that she will independently pursue the investigation since it is about her missing husband.

Now, there are three agencies on the investigation trail. IB under the leadership of Khan is investigating to identify the real culprit of the Kolkata Metro attack. Kolkata Police is investigating the missing Arnab Bagchi, Vidya’s husband. Vidya herself is independently investigating with the help of Sub-Inspector Rana about her missing husband. In all these investigations, the common link is Milan Damji. So, it is important to get the lead to reach Milan Damji.

Finally, Vidya gets the sensitive information about Milan Damji by hacking the website of NDC. When Milan Damji comes to know about it, he calls Vidya to handover the documents against which he will release her husband. She meets Milan Damji at an empty Durga Pooja Pandal and asks him whether he is sure that he can release her husband (she knows that her husband is dead). He gets a clue and takes out his gun to shoot her. However, before he shoots, she takes out her prosthetic pregnancy pad from her stomach and throws at his gun which makes him off balance. She takes out her thick hair pin and pierces his neck making him injured. She picks up his gun and pumps the bullets on him till he is dead. After hearing the gun shots, Khan and Rana who are already following Vidya, rush towards the scene. But Vidya has already mingled with a large Durga Puja crowd on the street and vanished.

At the end, Rana realises that Arnab Bagchi is Vidya’s fake creation to find the whereabouts of Milan Damji. Vidya Bagchi never existed as in reality, she was the widow of Arup Basu, an IB operative who had died in the poisonous gas attack on Kolkata Metro train because of which she lost her still born child in miscarriage. She has made the use of the police to avenge the death of her husband. And what an irony! The Kolkata police and IB thought that they were using Vidya Bagchi to reach Milan Damji to capture him alive to get more information as to who was the kingpin of Kolkata Metro train attack.

I found the film very engrossing. Sujoy Ghosh has very impressively presented the film with the story-like narrations and a build-up of suspense weaving with thrilling elements. The audience till the last moment does not know the real identity of Vidya Bagchi and of her fake pregnancy. The bonus for the viewers of the film is that drama is happening in the backdrop of Durga Pooja in Kolkata. Vidya Balan has given a stellar performance for a role which otherwise would have been performed by a male star actor in mainstream Hindi films. Nawazuddin Siddiqui has given the feel of a typical IB official like Amitabh Bachchan in ‘Zanzeer’ (1973). Almost all the local actors have given good supporting performances to make the film worthy of watching.

Interestingly, Sujoy Ghosh, being a fan of R D Burman, has partially used about half a dozen songs from the films of 70s and 80s, composed by R D Burman as a part of background music.

The film has six songs (including one second version song) which are written by Vishal Dadlani (3) and one each by Sandeep Srivastava, Anvita Dutt, and Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. Five songs are set to music by Vishal-Shekhar while the remaining one is a Rabindra Sangeet which I am presenting. The song is one of the most popular and inspirational Bangla songs, ‘ekla chalo re’ which was written and composed by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in 1905. The original song is interspersed with a few lines in English and Hindi which are basically the translation of some of the lines from the original Bangla poem.

In the film, only the opening two lines of Bangla song are played in the background following Vidya’s realisation that IB and Kolkata Police were using her as a bait to reach Milan Damji. The full song is played in the background as the closing credit titles run through the film.

———————————————–

If they answer not to thy call, walk alone,
If they are afraid and cower mutely facing the wall,
O thou of evil luck,
Open thy mind and speak out alone.
If they turn away, and desert you when crossing the wilderness,
O thou of evil luck,
Trample the thorns under thy tread,
And along the blood-lined track travel alone.
If they do not hold up the light
When the night is troubled with storm,
O thou of evil luck,
With the thunder flame of pain ignite thine own heart
And let it burn alone.

Hullo Atuldom

This post by Avinashji was a post full of his memories of his childhood & how he got into the habit of seeing films.

Similarly, any song or film from the 1970s, 80s & even 90s sends me down memory-lane. And if it is 11th of October – birthday of my all-time favourite actor who is called the BigB or the Shahenshah of Bollywood etc then a trip of nostalgia is natural.

Are there any songs of 30, 40 or even 50 years ago left to be posted ? Yes, of course! Many of them. Songs from movies where BigB is paired opposite Hema Malini, Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Rekha, Jaya Bhaduri, Rakhee, Moushumi Chatterjee, Neetu Singh, etc fall in the 40 & 50 year old categories. Those films in which Rati Agnihotri, Meenakshi Seshadri, Amrita Singh, Sridevi, Jaya Prada etc were his romantic leads are also almost 30/ 40 years old. Unbelievable, no? But then when someone has been in the film industry from 1968/69 this is bound to be the case. And to make matters difficult for us he is still working and post 2000 he has played father, grandfather etc., still gets to sing a song & shake a leg.

All of the above means that we have a loonngg way to go before we yyiippeeee songs of Bachchan Sr. At the time of writing this post (as per the list on the right of the blog-page) there are 261 Amitabh Bachchan songs of which in 21 he has sung for himself. Atulji has also got categories for Amitabh Bachchan present without lip-syncing, AB songs by Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Mahendra Kapoor, Manna Dey, Yesudas, Gurdas Maan, Anwar, Manhar, Mohd Aziz, Shabbir Kumar, Amit Kumar, Sudesh Bhosle, Laxmikant, RD Burman, Shankar Mahadevan etc. It goes without saying that the blog has most songs where Kishore Kumar has sung for AB -93.

Bachchan Sr. has been an idol for many actors who made there way into the films post the success of “Sholay”. He has tried his hand at producing films through his Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Ltd. He gave a chance to a few actors like Arshad Warsi, Simran Bhalla, Chandrachur Singh, Priya Gill etc in his production. He also made a patriotic film for which Veeru Devgan was the director. “Major Saab” (1998) was a film which saw Nafisa Ali coming out of hiatus.

I have a few big problems whenever I sit to write a post for Amitabh Bachchan’s birthday-
(a) I don’t know what to write & how much
(b) which song & dance sequence from which era to use.

I haven’t even mentioned how he played a negative character in “Parwana”. Or second lead to Jeetendra & Rajesh Khanna. How he landed the role in “Sholay” or his multi-hero movies with actors of his era.
Since I opened this post with a reference to the 70s/80s/90s we shall have a song from that period. i.e. when he played a romantic leads.

Let us have a song of the most loved Jodi of those times. Now when I write “loved Jodi” readers will think of Rekha- Amitabh Bachchan. “Kasme Vade” did have a Rekha -Amitabh Bachchan song; Rekha had a guest appearance in the film. That song was used to establish the character of the second Amitabh. The second character is introduced after the first, docile, Professor character dies in a college skirmish.

“Don”, also a 1978 release, had 2 Amitabhs where one is introduced, using a song, after the ‘Don’ character dies.

But we are not having a song from ‘Don’ neither are we having a Rekha- Amitabh song. When I spoke of ‘loved Jodi’ I was thinking of Rakhee with Amitabh. They had featured in a few movies together in the 70s & 80s and in the second innings of their career they acted together as parents to grown up children- Akshay Kumar, Juhi Chawla, Simone Singh etc. Rakhee has played Amitabh’s sweetheart who gets married to someone else; his live-in friend (in 2 films); his bhabhi & even his mother (just so that she got to act with the Dilip Kumar). She got to marrying him in one film (if my memory is correct). This Jodi was a little less conspicuous I think as we don’t find any articles written anywhere.

So “Kasme Vade” opens with today’s song which establishes that the two have been in love for sometime. We have a very charming hero looking & smiling lovingly at his dainty beauty. It is in the voices of Kishore Kumar & Lata Mangeshkar, composed by RD Burman & Gulshan Bawra is the lyricist.

A stray thought just struck me- Rakhee was the female Sanjeev Kumar. Why? Both were often seen playing characters older than their actual age, she was given mature-looking make-up & outfits just like Sanjeev Kumar who after ‘Sholay’ played older characters very often.

Let us get on to today’s song and wish our BigB all the best for a healthy & active life in front of the camera- currently on the sets of KBC.

Hullo Atuldom

As a youngster, I had heard a song which had the mukhda ending with ‘prem ka hum shree ganesh karein’. At that time I didn’t know what the phrase “shree ganesh karein” meant. As time passed, I learnt that it meant a new-start for any activity or venture by seeking the blessings of your God and elders. I know for sure that followers of Islam say “Bismillah” at similar situations. I think it is a very Indian practise. I know of students who used to write some holy symbols on top of every page of their answer sheets at the time of important examinations. ( I have heard that the various education boards have prohibited this recently, don’t know if this is being implemented. 🙂 )

So, today happens to be the chaturthi of the Shukla paksha in the month of Bhadrapad; by the Vikrama Samvat calendar. By the panchangs followed in the South of India, the day was trutheeya till 12.39p.m. & then Chaturthi has set in. Don’t know if that is the reason South Indians are celebrating Ganesh/ Vinayaka Chaturthi today.
Since morning I have been receiving Ganpati Bappa Morya & Happy Ganesh Chaturthi messages. Then there are messages of Hartalika Teej. This is one festival about which I have no knowledge. Never heard of it. So I googled. This is what I have understood.

“Teej (Nepali: तीज) literally meaning the “third” denoting the third day after the new moon when the monsoon begins as per the Hindu calendar. It is a combined name for 3 Hindu festivals primarily dedicated to Hindu deities – the mother goddess Parvati and her male consort Lord Shiva. The festival is mainly celebrated by married women & unmarried girls mostly in North India and Nepal to wish for the long life of their husband or future husband and to welcome the arrival of monsoon season with the singing, swings, dancing, enjoyment, prayer rituals and often fast. “Teej” is a generic name referring to the three types of Teej festivals – ‘Haryali Teej’ on the third day after new moon of the Shravana month, ‘Kajari Teej’ 15 days later, and ‘Hartalika Teej’ another 15 days later. The ‘Haryali Teej’ (literally meaning the “green teej”), also known as the ‘Sindhara Teej’, ‘Chhoti Teej’, ‘Shravana Teej’ or ‘Sawan Teej’, falls on the third day after new moon of the Shravana month, marking the day when Lord Shiva consented to goddess Parvati’s wish to marry him. Celebrations by married women, who visit their parental home includes preparing swings on which they then swing and sing happy Teej songs. The ‘Kajari Teej’ (literally meaning the “dark teej”), also known as the ‘Badi Teej’, is celebrated 15 days after the “Haryali Teej” during the dark (waxing crescent) phase of the moon. The ‘Hartalika Teej’ (literally a composite word of “Harat” and “Aalika” meaning “a woman’s kidnap with her consent by her female friends”), falls one lunar month after the “Haryali Teej” on the third day after new moon in the month of Bhadrapada which usually falls a day before the Ganesh Chaturthi. This teej marks the occasion when Parvati encouraged her friends to kidnap her to escape the marriage with Lord Vishnu after her father Himalaya wanted to give her hand in marriage to him. It is celebrated by married women who observe the “nirjala vrata”” (water-less fast) for the long life of their husband.”

That explains what I saw yesterday. I shall explain that here too. Bangalore has a sizeable number of Nepalese who work in beauty parlours, homes as maids etc. I am sure there are many of them working in the I.T. industry too. Yesterday, my maid took a day off, “teej hai madam.”. Then I saw the whole brigade of them dressed in their best sarees (most of them being Red), with lots of sindoor on their ‘maang’ & I was wondering about the customs related with the festival. It seems they give more importance to “Teej” vis-a-viz Ganesh Chaturthi.

I would like to include a little note about the day for us, my family to be precise. We don’t get the Bappa (idol) home but do a pooja to the in-house Ganesha idol. We don’t have any fasting or feasting but normally don’t eat anything till the pooja is done. The main prasad we make is steamed Modak in sweet & savoury variations. It seems my husband’s grandma used to fast on Ganesh Chaturthi (don’t recall if she used to have the various prasad that was there) which she ended on the next day called Rishi Panchami.

But whatever be the method of worshipping the Elephant-headed god he is the one who is worshipped before the start of any venture.
“ādi-pūjyaṃ gaṇādhyakṣhaṃ, umā-putraṃ vināyakam”

The Blog has just touched a new century. Actually, it has reached a new 1000. Let us wish for new centuries & thousands. All the best to Atulji & his trusted lieutenant Sudhirji. The milestone has come on a festival day.
Let us have a song worshipping the Vignaharta, Vigneswara, Ekdanta, Gauriputra- and all the other names by which he is addressed.

The song is a traditional prayer song from the 2005 release “Viruddh”. The singing voice is of Shankar Mahadevan. The song plays at the start of the film which was directed by Mahesh Manjrekar & produced by A. B. Corp. Ltd in association with Satyajeet Movies. The cast was lead by Amitabh Bachchan with Sharmila Tagore playing his wife. John Abraham was his son whose love-interest was Anusha Dandekar. Then there were Sanjay Dutt, Prem Chopra, Sachin Khedekar, Viju Khote, Sharat Saxena, Shivaji Satam, Amitabh Dayal etc. playing important characters. The song starts in John Abraham’s voice where he is giving a background about his father.

(Note: I don’t think the video that I found on YouTube is as it appears in the film, but it gives us a run-through the film)
Jai Shree Ganeshaya Namah.

In this article, I am taking up for discussion, an obscure Hindi film whose shooting started in 1971 but completely stopped in 1976 for multiple reasons. In the meanwhile, the director left the film. In 1993, the producer of the film took the task of directing the film and completed shooting within one year without the main actor. However, the film could be released only after 37 years from the date of the commencement of the shooting, on April 27, 2008, that too in few theatres of Maharashtra. The name of the film is ‘Yaar Meri Zindagi’ (2008).

The film was produced by Ashok Gupta under the banner of Sonu Art International and was directed by Mukul Dutt/Ashok Gupta. The star cast included Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Sharda, Sudha Chandran, Iftekhar, Dulari, Chand Usmani, Shivraj, Jalal Agha, CS Dubey, Virendra Razdan. Master Jitesh, Master Sharook, Baby Reshma etc. Padma Khanna, Ranjeet and Aruna Irani made their special appearances in the film.

As mentioned earlier, the shooting of the film started in 1971 when both Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha were struggling actors. Both were trying to established their foothold in Hindi films. Probably, this may be the reason as to why both were seen together in films like ‘Parwaana’ (1971), ‘Bombay To Goa’ (1972), ‘Raaste Ka Patthar’ (1972), etc. Sudha Chandran’s name appears in the cast who was around 6 years of age in 1971. It is obvious that she must have joined the film during the second phase of the film’s shooting in 1993. Similarly, Aruna Irani, Padma Khanna and Ranjeet may have made the special appearances in the film in 1993. Amitabh Bachchan did not join during the re-shooting of the film in 1993 while Shatrughan Sinha who has also become a star with large fan following, cooperated with the producer. The film’s song album was released in 1993.

Almost the entire story of the film is presented in a flashback mode.  The gist of the story of the film is as under:

Ajay (Amitabh Bachchan), son of a poor farmer and Vikram (Shatrughan Sinha), son of a landlord are childhood friends in a village. Radha (Sharda) and Sikha (Sudha Chandran) are village girls who are also childhood friends and are close to Ajay and Vikram. While Ajay becomes a doctor and serves the village, Vikram becomes Thakur Vikram Singh after the death of his father. Their friendship continues in their changed profiles. The friendship is soured when Ajay gets Vikram’s henchman, Shamsher (Ranjit) arrested for kidnaping a village girl. From then onwards, their friendship turns into the clash between ideology of Ajay for the betterment of the villagers and the ego of Thakur Vikram Singh as a landlord.

Though Ajay and Vikram fight on every issue concerning the village, in their hearts, they are discreetly concerned about each other’s welfare. Sikha, the childhood friend of both Ajay and Vikram, tries to make Vikram understand Ajay’s concerned about the villagers, but his ego precedes over his friendship. In this way, Vikram is caught between his ego and the inherent desire to keep his friendship with Ajay. Over a period of time, he becomes restless and to overcome this, he takes to drinking and entertainment by organizing dance performances in his palace. In one of the dance performances, Vikram invites the entire village to participate. The dancer is Heerabai who is none other than Radha who had taken the vocation of dancer to take care of her poor father.

None of the villagers respond to Vikram’s invitation to watch the dance performance. Feeling insulted by the villagers’ boycott, to punish them, he instructs his staff to stop the release of water from the dam to the fields of villagers. Ajay again confronts Vikram on this issue and threatens him that he would himself go and open the sluice gate of the dam to release the water. Vikram sends his security staff to prevent Ajay from entering the dam site without harming him. In the meanwhile, some disgruntled elements in the village see the opportunity to settle the score with Ajay. Vikram comes to know about the developments and rushes to the dam site where he finds that Ajay is killed not before he has opened the sluice gate of the dam.  Vikram blames himself for the death of Ajay and as a punishment, he gets whipped by one of his staff members. He continues this ritual every day until his death.

The film’s DVD is of around 1 hour 45 minutes. Obviously, some scenes from the film are either deleted or could not be shot due to non-availability of Amitabh Bachchan when the film’s shooting was resumed in 1993. Hence, in some places, discontinuity in the film’s story is discernible. Also, two songs from the film are not in the DVD. One can see Shatrughan Sinha’s transformation from a young and lean in 1971 to a middle-aged man in 1993. Since Amitabh Bachchan was not available when shooting of the film resumed in 1993, in the climax scene, Amitabh Bachchan’s duplicate was used, showing him only with his back and that too in the long shot.

‘Yaar Meri Zindagi’ has six songs three are written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and three by Surendra Sathi which were set to music by RD Burman. It is my guess that the three songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and rendered by Asha Bhosle were recorded during the first stint of the film’s shooting in 1971. The remaining 3 songs written by Surendra Sathi have been rendered by the next generation playback singers like Kavita Krishnamurthy, Sadhana Sargam, Ranjana Joglekar and Yunus which may have been recorded in 1993.

I am presenting the first song from the film, “Naache Mora Pyaar Dekho Na” to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Asha Bhosle on the lyrics written by Majrooh Sultanpuri. The song is picturised on Sharda who is performing a dance for Shatrughan Sinha. Iftikhar is also seen in the picturisation. The song ends abruptly when Sharda sees Amitabh Bachchan entering the room where guests are gathered to watch her dance.

RD Burman has re-used the tune for this song from his Bangla non-film song, “Jete Dao Amay Dekona” (1969) which was also sung by Asha Bhosle. Later, he re-used the same tune for another Hindi non-film song’”Jaane Do Mujhe Jaane Do” rendered by Asha Bhosle for Gulzar’s album, ‘Dil Padosi Hai’ (1987) and Telugu song, “Mouname Priya” sung by S Janaki in ‘Chinni Krishnudu’ (1987).

The tune of the song under discussion is based on Raag Nand which Madan Mohan had also used for the song, “Tu Jahaan Jahhan Chalega Mera Saaya Saath Hoga in ‘Mera Saaya’ (1966). Hence the song under discussion and this song sound, more or less, similar in tune.

This is the song, part of which is shot near to the Thajiwas glacier, near Sonamarg, Kashmir. This is the route going to Laddakh, travelling east of Srinagar.   Further on this road falls Kargil area, about which many people have told me is much too beautiful to miss.  Laddakh is a sight to behold too.  I have missed both Laddakh and Kargil, but hope to visit in future, in-sha-Allah.

When we spoke to local people and guides in the valley at Sonamarg, one of them told us that many Hindi film songs are filmed in the area and very near to the Thajiwas glacier.  He mentioned a song from the 1982 film ‘Satte Pe Satta’. I forgot all about this and only discovered this song accidentally.  It is indeed filmed nearer to the glacier, than we could travel.   A few decades ago, the vehicles were allowed to go up to the valley where the glacier is near, and the rivers and waterfalls start, fed by the Thajiwas glacier.   Obviously, the location is visible from the highway, but far away for us city people to walk up or even ride a horse. I clicked great many photos, to capture different fingers of the main glacier, whatever I could see from one side i.e. the highway and Sonamarg side. It must be magnificent to look at from the other sides, which are truly remote and not habitable areas. This is only one glacier of the 10,000 which fall in the Indian territory. One needs several lives to fully watch and savour the magnificence of the Himalayan Mountain range, and its various attributes and aspects.  The Himalayas were formed due to the friction and constant northward movement of the Indian plate against the Asian plate, over thousands of years.

This is my previous post on Kashmir visit – “Jiya Jiya Re Jiya Re“.

Todays’s song is from the film ‘Satte pe Satta’ (1982), which is mostly shot in Kashmir over 40 years ago, and one part of it is near the famous glacier. Must be in fair weather, the full star cast of the film went up there to shoot in bright sunlight. But they all returned to the base farmhouse/ farmstead where rest of the song is filmed. The singers are RD BurmanKishore KumarAsha BhosleBhupinder SinghSapan ChakrabortyBasu Chakraborty and the music is composed by RD Burman.  The lyricist is Gulshan Bawra and it is the title song of the film.

Interestingly, Gulshan Bawra has rhymed the words satte pe satta with the word albatta.  This gives us a unique word, and as far as I am aware, used only once in a Hindi film song.  The word is a common usage affirmative / emphasising in cultured chaste Urdu.   In old Hindi films this word is common, in dialogues, where the speaker wants to say or assert a view, despite this or inspite of that, ‘albatta‘, the truth prevails 😊.

اَلبَتَّہکےاردومعانی پوشیدہ فعلمتعلق یقیناً، قطعیطورپر، بےشک، ضرور، یقینہےکہ، لیکن، مگر، اتناضروریہے

albatta. अलबत्ताالبتہ. although, but, on the other hand. Isth

This explains the origin of the word.

Is the English word ‘albeit’ derived from the Urdu word ‘Albatta’?

No, the word ‘albeit’ is not derived from the Urdu word ‘Albatta’. ‘Although’ is a conjunction that means ‘in spite of the fact that’ or ‘even though’. It is derived from the Old English word ‘þeah’ which means ‘even though’ or ‘although’. The Urdu word ‘albatta‘ is a conjunction that means ‘although’ or ‘notwithstanding’. It is derived from the Arabic word ‘al-batta‘ which means ‘however’ or ‘despite’.

I have fond memories of watching this film at Minerva (or was it Apsara?) in 1982. We lived in the BEST officer’s quarters and the many families decided to watch the film collectively.  The tickets were booked through the theater management, via the PSU’s good offices, as the supplier of electricity. I remember the theater management had put up a welcome message for the BEST officers and their families on screen, before the start of the film.

I am truly amazed to have had such unique experiences of movie watching, in theaters. Some memories, like being hit with a clothes hanger, and being forced to go to watch ‘Muqaddar ka Sikander’ (1978); and leaving the Liberty cinema in interval after not watching ‘Lekin’ (1990), walking up to Maratha Mandir to watch a re-release matinee show of ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ (1960) in knee deep water-logged streets; the experience of watching coins being thrown at the screen on the song “Tere Chehre Mein Wo Jaadu Hai” in a dilapidated theatre in Belgaum while watching ‘Dharmata’ (1975) sometime in the mid 80’s; the best of which is my friend being told by the usher, “No madam, it is waiting for you” at Regal cinema where we were late for the show of ‘Gone With The Wind’  (1939), in reply to her question “Has the movie started?”. There are more such memories, which will surface in time.  I will share them in future posts.

Song – Dukki Pe Dukki Ho Ya Satte Pe Satta (Satte Pe Satta) (1982) Singer – Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle, Bhupinder Singh, Sapan Chakraborty, Basu Chakraborty, Lyrics – Gulshan Bawra, MD – RD Burman

Hullo Atuldom

India is celebrating the 75th year of its Independence. Mumbai based Rajshri productions and distribution company is also celebrating its 75th year.

I am sure we have many knowledgeable followers in the blog who will give us information on how Rajshri took to making critically acclaimed films that were also commercially successful. Most of their films had stories that stressed on values, family ties, unity etc. and provided opportunity for family outings. I recall a cinema hall in Chembur, Mumbai was decked up, almost like a wedding hall, when Rajshri’s ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’ was released and all of the outfits worn by its characters became a rage at that time.

Rajshri Productions have been instrumental in giving life to careers of many actors, introducing new faces on the silver screen, etc. Sachin (Pilgaonkar), Sarika, (Master) Satyajit, Junior Mehmood, had their first adult roles in films made by Rajshri Productions. Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bhadhuri, Ranjeeta, Amol Palekar, Farida Jalal, Salman Khan, Anupam Kher and numerous other actors have featured in Rajshri films in the initial part of their career. There will be many many more artists who have been associated with this film making house at various times and in various capacities.

There is one actor though, I don’t recall, seeing in a Rajshri movie – Danny. The handsome actor from Sikkim who has been actively entertaining his fans since 1971, in Hindi, Bengali, Nepali and even a Tamil film. He has sung a few songs too and the first time was under S. D. Burman’s baton in “Ye Gulistaan Humara” alongside Lata Mangeshkar (mera-naam-yaao-mere-paas-aao/) an event that he has said was ‘a dream come true.’ It seems that it was a daring experiment that Burman dada conducted and he asked Danny to sing with a comic effect while maintaining melody. He has shared the recording room with Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, and Mohd. Rafi.

He was named Tshering Phintso Denzongpa at birth and on a recommendation from his then-classmate, at FTII, Jaya Bhadhuri he changed his name to a simpler sounding ‘Danny’. But his son has not done any such thing – he made a debut in the 2021 released, ‘Squad’ as Rinzing Denzongpa.
Danny has played a large variety of characters – positive, negative and the in-betweens too. But gave up a chance to play Gabbar Singh in Ramesh Sippy’s ‘Sholay’ as the dates were clashing with Feroz Khan’s ‘Dharmatma’. He is a two-time winner of the Filmfare award for Best supporting actor- for ‘Sanam Bewafaa’ in 1992 and ‘Khuda Gawah’ in 1993.

My husband is a Danny-fan. He loves the way he has maintained himself and his age is not visible in his demeanour. He is turning 75 today.

The last film of Danny that I saw in a cinema hall was “Uunchai” that released on 11th November 2022. (I saw it on 12th, night show). I discovered the movie rather by accident. I was seeing some video on youtube when this video popped up.

My first reaction was – “wow!! what a cast.” Amitabh Bachchan & Danny together on-screen again….. after 18 years; their last film together came in 2004 “Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo”.

The last time Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher & Danny were in a film together was Mukul Anand’s ‘Hum’ (1991). And the tadka on all of this is it was a Rajshri Film. So we were guaranteed of wholesome entertainment (it was good entertainment). It brought together the stalwarts as friends who are goaded to undertake a trek to the Base Camp of Mount Everest. I forgot to mention that Boman Irani played the fourth friend. Bhupen (played by Danny) makes arrangements for the trek to which Amit (Amitabh Bachchan retained his original name Amit Shrivastav) agrees. He manages to convince Boman Irani and Anupam Kher too, but Bhupen dies before the friends (of a lifetime) can embark on the trip. The remaining three undertake the trek in the process they battle their physical limitations, and discover what true freedom is. Parineeti Chopra played their guide in the trek, Sarika (returning to Rajshri films after years) played Bhupen’s lost love who joins the trio on the trek. Neena Gupta played Boman Irani’s wife, Nafisa Ali was Amitabh Bachchan’s wife (in a guest appearance).

“Uunchai” was a visual treat. And as I was seeing the film I kept thinking of our Sadanand Kamath ji and his passion for trekking.

Today’s song doesn’t feature the magnificent Himalayas though it is a major part of the film. Today’s song happens in the film as the friends get together to celebrate their friend Bhupen’s (Danny) birthday. I had Goosebumps as I saw the song in the film. The singer for this song NaKash Aziz with Rajiv Sundaresan, Suhas Sawant, and Arun Kamath being the backing vocals. The song was written by Irshad Kamil and Amit Trivedi was the music director.

“Barsaat Ki Ek Raat” was a Shakti Samanta produced and directed 1981 release. It starred Amitabh Bachchan, Rakhee, Utpal Dutt, Amjad Khan, Abhi Bhattacharya, Prema Narayan, Sujit Kumar, Asit Sen etc. Music was by R. D. Burman & Anand Bakshi was the lyricist. Songs were in the voices of Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle.

The film had 5 songs of which the following 3 are on the blog:

Song Date posted
Apne pyaar ke sapne sach huye 10 October 2009
Haaye wo pardesi man mein kaun disha se aa gaya 11 October 2009
Manchali ho manchali kaun si hai ye gali 4 April 2019

The movie was set in the picturesque North Bengal region- Darjeeling to be exact. Tea gardens formed the backdrop for most songs. It was a made simultaneously in Bengali as “Anusandhan” and was based on a Bengali novel. The Bengali version was more successful as compared to the Hindi one.
Abhi Bhattacharya played an official of the tea gardens and Rakhee was his blind daughter.

Amjad Khan (Kaliram) played the local goonda- element who is a law unto himself and has all the vices possible. Utpal Dutt (Sahuji), who is Amjad Khans’ father in the movie, is also the cause of the areas’ problems. He instigates the workers to strike against Abhi Bhattacharya etc. Additionally, he is involved in cross border smuggling.

Into this set up, Abhijeet (Amitabh Bachchan) walks in. Initially the locals have no clue about who he is. And he gets into a tangle with Kaliram on numerous occasions, today’s song is one such tangle, though a musical one.

It happens on the occasion of Durga Puja. Kaliram tries to impress the local female populace with his “dhol playing” and challenges Abhijeet to outdo him. What follows is a song in the voice of Kishore Kumar and Kaliram being mocked by Abhijeet. We have the blind Rakhi in the audience with Prema Narayan giving hee live updates.

This used to be a song that came regularly on Doordarshan.

We are having the song today to remember Panchamda (birthname:- Rahul Dev Burman) on his 29th remembrance anniversary.

For those who are his fans, it is common knowledge that he was son of legendary music director/ singer Sachin Dev Burman and Meera Burman. People are said to be born into riches Panchamda was born into music.

I have read at various places that SD Burman was proud to be referred to as Pancham’s father in the 70s. He was friends with the music director duo Laxmi-Pyare and has played the harmonica in some songs composed by the duo. The duo have also appeared on-screen in a song was composed by RDB. His closest friends in the industry were Rajesh Khanna, Kishore Kumar, Gulzar, Dev Anand & Gulshan Bawra. The trio of Rajesh Khanna- RDB – Kishore Kumar worked together in 32 films. Panchamda was nominated for around 8 films at the Filmfare and won 4 of them, the last one was posthumously for “1942- A Love Story”.

I can go on writing about his songs which are my personal favorites and may still miss a few lived songs. Today’s song is also one from my playlist.

Hullo Atuldom

Top three actors of the golden era of Hindi cinema (from mid 1940s to late 1960s) were Dilip-Dev-Raj. They were nearly of the same age though their debut years were “Jwar Bhata” (Dilip Kumar) in 1944, “Hum Ek Hain” which came in 1946 (Dev Anand) and “Valmiki” also in 1946 which had Raj Kapoor in his first adult role but it was a tiny role. The three of them carved their own path and were the dominant stars of the Golden Era. Raj Kapoor went on to become a much-acclaimed actor-director earning him the title of ‘The greatest Showman’, Dev Anand also became an actor-director and was usually associated with slick and stylish city-based films and became popular for his trendy fashion sense as well, and Dilip Kumar came to be hailed as the greatest actor and set a high bar for future generations to emulate.

However, ironically all three never got the opportunity to come together on screen and act in a single film. Maybe no director or story writer could conceive a script to bring these stars together. However, there were two films where two of the three acted as co-stars and these two films therefore are rare treasures to be appreciated and preserved for this unique aspect.

The above are the thoughts expressed by a blogger in this post.

I had similar thoughts about the troika of the 1970s Jeetendra- Amitabh Bachchan- Rajesh Khanna and have stated it in this post. On further rewinding I recalled “Anand” (1970), “Namak Haram” (1973), “Gehri Chaal” (1973) & “Dharam Kaanta” (1982). That is a list of movies which had Amitabh Bachchan & Rajesh Khanna; Jeetendra & Amitabh Bachchan; and Rajesh Khanna & Jeetendra. But there were non after these. I am sure, readers will agree that it was a loss for Hindi Movie buffs. Here I would like to mention that Amitabh Bachchan was the last to make his debut in Hindi films; the other two had their first releases in 1964 and 1966.

This was a post to celebrate Jeetendra turning 80. With today’s post we are wishing The Big B- as many of his fans address him- on turning 80. He is still very active and his last movie released on 7th October.

For the last 10-15 years he has been playing roles of older characters but mostly roles specially written keeping his abilities in mind. “Piku” one of his recent movies had him play an eccentric 70 year old father of an architect (Deepika Padukone), living in Delhi. His act of the Hypochondriac with chronic constipation, who traces every problem to his bowel movements is a standout from his recent movies. In 2020, we saw him play a stingy old ghar jamai Chunnan ‘Mirza’ Nawab in ‘Gulabo Sitabo”. That role won him a Critics Best Actor award at the 66th Filmfare Awards. This man is still getting roles which get him awards.

Since 2000 he has been the host of the Indian version of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” i.e. “Kaun Banega Crorepati?” (KBC for short) and people who know me know that I am addicted to that show. But then my family and friends will say that I am addicted to anything that so much as shows Amitabh Bachchan’s shadow. I will stop any job at hand if I spot “Sholay”, “Deewar”, “Amar Akbar Anthony”, “Khuddar”, “Trishul”, “Don”, “Satte Pe Satta”, “Mahaan” and “Bhootnath”, “Piku”, “Black”, “Ab Tumhaare Hawaale Watan Saathiyo” and most of the 200 movies (maybe I will give a few of his initial movies a miss) that he has acted in, over the last 53 years. And when there is such a huge library of movies and songs to choose from getting the one that highlights the person’s abilities is not easy.
The song that I have chosen shows Amitabh Bachchan with Aruna Irani who incidentally was the first heroine who played AB Sr’s romantic interest in the 1972 released “Bombay To Goa”. There is an interview of Aruna Irani that keeps popping up on YouTube where she speaks of how uncomfortable AB Sr. used to be in the dance sequences of “Bombay To Goa”. AB Sr. was always good at action, emotion, comedy etc; today’s song will show the improvement that had come in his dancing over the years.

The song is from the 1983 released “Mahaan” which was directed by S. Ramanathan. If I am not wrong he had directed “Bombay To Goa” also. “Mahaan” had AB Sr. in a triple role of father and sons who are twins. Waheeda Rehman, Zeenat Aman and Parveen Babi played the heroines. Amjad Khan led the brigade of villains that included Kadar Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Sujit Kumar, Mac Mohan. Ashok Kumar, Mukri, Urmila Bhatt, Aruna Irani and Meenakshi (or was it Nandita Thakur) who formed the rest of the cast. The songs were written by Anjaan and RD Burman was the music director. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Amit Kumar, RD Burman and Amitabh Bachchan were the playback singers used.

Happy 80th Birthday to the Darling of the masses. Happy Birthday to the Big B. Happy Birthday to Amitabh Bachchan.

Song-Har chhori raani hiyaan har chhora raaja(Mahaan)(1983) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Anjaan, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

hmmm mm mm
ee galiyan ka dharam alag hai
alag hai reet riwaaz
kaa samjhe
na samjhe to samajh lo hamse
ham samjhaa den aaj

har chhori raani hiyaan
har chhora raaja
har chhori raani hiyaan
har chhora raaja
magar kabhi baja nahin
hiyaan band baaja
magar kabhi baja nahin
hiyaan band baaja

aawara galiyan ki pariyaan
dekh uthhe dil jhoom
waah waah
kya maza
aawara galiyan ki pariyaan
dekh uthhe dil jhoom
itar paan gajre ki mahak
ghunghru mujre ki dhoom
chanchhan chhanan chhanan
khankhan khanan khanan
chanchhan chhanan chhanan
khanan khanan
natkhat chhori
ban ke chakori
chanchal gori
kare dil ki chori
kabhi lachak lachak kar
kabhi chhamak chhamak kar
kabhi jhatak jhatak kar
kabhi matak matak kar
kabhi latkau latkau
kabhi jhatkau jhatkau
kabhi thumkau thumkau
kabhi matkau matkau
lachak lachak chhamak chhamak
jhatak jhatak matak matak
palat tera dhyaan kidhar hai bhai

har chhori raani hiyaan
har chhora raaja
haan
har chhori raani hiyaan
har chhora raaja
magar kabhi baja nahin
hiyaan band baaja
magar kabhi baja nahin
hiyaan band baaja

suno suno
ee aasik maasuk ke jhagde

tad patrika tambu
kabhi tadip tad kabhi satykam
kabhi kurukshetar ka lambu
bambu

kabhi tadip tad kabhi satykam
kabhi kurukshetar ka lambu

bar jorikar na sainya
ho bar jori kar na sainya
ho meri chhod chhod bainya

palat tera dhyan kidhar hai bhai

har chhori raani hiyaan
har chhora raaja

har chhora raaja
magar kabhi baja nahin
hiyaan band baaja
magar kabhi baja nahin
hiyaan band baaja

hey shiv shambhu
uthha ke taal tamboora
aur ukhaaaad de tambu

are hiya raat bhar raas rachaawen

khabardar hoshiyar thaanedar hawaldar
pahredar aur jamaadar
pakad lo in bandaron ko
aur
suno suno in ghonchu paakhandiyon ke kaarykram
arre vadki jinko sunke toot jaayenge tumhaare saare bharam

arre din bhar ye jogi re jogi
haa
raat bhar ye bhogi re bhogi
dekho re dekho
roop ke lobhi kaise hai ye dhongi re dhongi
inki najar me hum saare hain mooli gajar aalu gobhi

har chhori raani hiyaan
har chhora raaja
haan
har chhori raani hiyaan
har chhora raaja
magar kabhi baja nahin
hiyaan band baaja
magar kabhi baja nahin
hiyaan band baaja
