Honth hain tere do laal heere

O P Nayyar was one music director who reached the top without using Lata’s voice. He groomed Asha Bhonsle and he was responsible for her singing style.
If one looked at O P Nayyar’s music, it was dependent on the kind of singing that Asha Bhonsle ( female playback singing) and Rafi ( male playback singing) provided.
There were occasions in 1960s when O P Nayyar had disagreements with Rafi and then he had to make do with the voice of Mahendra Kapoor for male playback singing and Mahendra Kapoor did a decent job singing in Rafi style.
By early 1970s, Rafi and O P Nayyar had patched up, but it was Asha Bhonsle who finally got estranged from O P Nayyar. “chain se tumne kabhi hamke” was the last song that Asha Bhonsle sang for O P Nayyar for the movie “Pran Jaaye par vachan na jaaye”(1973).
“Heera Moti” was a movie that came after “Pran jaaye par vachan na jaaye ” and it had a nice song that went “honth hain tere do laal heere”. All these days I thought that it was sung by Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. But it is only recently that I came to know that the female voice was not Asha Bhonsle’s. It was the voice of Dilraj Kaur and it must be said that she sang so well in Asha Bhonsle style that most people, including me were fooled for decades. And ofcourse, doing such a nice imitation of Asha Bhonsle was no mean achievement.
This song was picturised on Shatrughan Sinha and Reena Roy, who made a popular pair in Bollywood in those days.
