Hai nazar ka ishaara

Here is a superb “party song” from “Anita” (1966). I wonder if this should be called a cabaret song as well. It seems that the dance was supposed to be cabaret but the costumes of the dancers is very much that of classical dancers.
This is a rare song in the sense that it is one of the very few songs where the two Mangeshkar sisters Lata and Usha sing together. Also, it is rare to find Raja Mehdi Ali Khan writing a song for Laxmikant Pyarelal. And he has written a good quality song for what was supposed to be a song of timepass nature.
The song is picturisated on two dancers. One of them is Bela Bose,. But who is the other ? She tries very hard to look like Helen, but I do not think she is Helen.
PS- Now I know that she is Madhumati. Thanks for the information, Greta.
Our hero Manoj Kumar is also present in the club, seated alone in his table. As often happens in Party songs, good guys and bad guys both are present and messages are being passed around on pieces of paper ( mobile phones and SMses were not yet in existence, remember). The bad guys are waiting for the song to end so that they can act, or may be the song ends as the bad guys act. We may never know.
As I mentioned earlier, it is an interesting song, what with two Mangeshkar sisters making one of their rare appearances together and that too in a cabaret song picturised on dancers draped in classical dance attires. And a renowned ghazal writer was roped in to write this song. It is a very interesting song indeed.
Song-Hai nazar ka ishaara (Anita) (1967) Singers-Lata, Usha Mangeshkar, Lyrics-Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal
Lyrics
aaa aaa
hai nazar ka ishaara sambhal jaayiye
hai nazar ka ishaara sambhal jaayiye
jaayiye dil ki baaton me naa aayiye
hai nazar ka ishaara sambhal jaayiye
hai nazar ka ishaara sambhal jaayiye
warna wahi baat ho jaayegi
gham se mulaaqaat hoi jaayegi
warna wahi baat ho jaayegi
din hai magar raat ho jaayegi
meri zulfen khudaaya na bikhraayiye
hai nazar ka ishaara sambhal jaayiye
hai nazar ka ishaara sambhal jaayiye
aaa aaa
jeena bhi dushwaar ho jaayega
ikraar inkaar ho jaayega
jeena bhi dushwaar ho jaayega
ham aap me pyaar ho jaayega
aap mahfil se uthke chale jaayiye
hai nazar ka ishaara sambhal jaayiye
hai nazar ka ishaara sambhal jaayiye
is aag ko bas bujhaa dijiye
sholon ko yoon na hawaa dijiye
is aag ko bas bujhaa dijiye
main yaad aaun duaa dijiye
mere aankhon se aankhen na takraayiye
hai nazar ka ishaara sambhal jaayiye

The other dancer is Madhumati, who is often confused with Helen. They looked quite a bit alike, and I think she purposely copied Helen’s style as well.
It’s a very fun film with good songs 😉
