Kisi patthar ki moorat se

Posted on: May 14, 2009

This is a piano song cum party song in the sense that this song is sung by Sunil Dutt seated on a piano in a party.

As is the custom in such songs, everyone stays put at his / her places like a statue. these songs are normally addressed to the heroine who stands near the piano and she is the only one allowed to move and emote, and feel guily. But in this song, the heroine is even more immobile than the other guests, if that is possible. the song describes her as a patthar ki moorat ( stone statue) and she indeed stands there stone faced.

May be she was required to act that way, but where were her facila expressions ? She was required to feel guilty, shame faced, uncomfortable etc ( the way Asha Parekh would look in so many piano cum party songs), but Vimmi just would not let an expression come to her face.

Here was one heroine who was actually used as a piece of furniture in this movie. What a waste, considering that she was the heroine of this movie, no less.

Song-Kisi patthar ki moorat se (Hamraaz) (1968) Singer-Mahendra Kapoor, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-Ravi

Lyrics

usi ke saamne uski shiqaayat kaa iraadaa hai
usi ke saamne uski shiqaayat kaa iraadaa hai
kisi patthar ki moorat se muhabbat kaa iraadaa hai
parastish kii tamannaa hai, ibaadat kaa iraadaa hai
kisi patthar ki moorat se

sunaa hai har jawaan patthar ke dil mein aag hoti hai
sunaa hai har jawaan patthar ke dil mein aag hoti hai
magar jab tak na chhedo, sharm hi parde mein soti hai
ye sochaa hai ki dil ki baat uske rubaru kah de
nateezaa kuch bhi nikle aaj apni aarzoo kah de
har ik bejaa taqalluf se baghaawat kaa iraadaa hai
har ik bejaa taqalluf se baghaawat kaa iraadaa hai
kisi patthar ki moorat se

muhabbat berukhi se aur bhadkegi wo kyaa jaane
muhabbat berukhi se aur bhadkegi wo kyaa jaane
tabeeyat is adaa pe aur phadkegi wo kyaa jaane
tabeeyat is adaa pe aur phadkegi wo kyaa jaane
wo kyaa jaane ke apnaa kis qayaamat kaa iraadaa hai
wo kyaa jaane ke apnaa kis qayaamat kaa iraadaa hai
kisi patthar ki moorat se muhabbat kaa iraadaa hai
parastish kii tamannaa hai, ibaadat kaa iraadaa hai
kisi patthar ki moorat se

I love this song. Everything about it is fantastic – but the Urdu lyrics completely have me floored everytime I listen to this.

Another classic from the Sahir Ludhianvi treasure-chest of wonderful lyrics.

Any idea what “parastish” means ?
