Jaate ho to jaao par itna sun lo

“Desh Premi” (1982) was one movie that I actually liked rather whole heartedly, but it appears that I was once again in the minority. While Manmohan Desai movies that I disliked turned out to be big hits, this movie was regarded as a damp squib at the box office.

I have no idea why my likings differs from aam janta as far as watching Manmohan Desai movies are concerned.

This song “jaate ho to jaao” is a fun song, if one can believe the scene that precedes this song. Amitabh Bachchan, running away from baddies, enters a hall, where mass weddings are taking place.

Now, to the uninitiated, weddings in India are very expensive affairs, where especially the parents of the girls are the most harrassed, and the biggest source of harrasment is demands for dowry.

To ensure that such social evils like dowry are weeded out from society, some social organisations advocate “Parichay Sammelans”. These are functions, where eligible boys and girls of marriageable age assemble in a premise and introduce themselves. People looking for life partners gather there and select their life partners there. Often the same organisation then organises mass weddings for them sometime later, and thus the enormous expenditures of weddings are avoided.

Of course, such practices take place only among those sections of society that are financially the weakest. Well off sections of society continue to organise lavish weddings and the concept of mass marriages is unlikely to reach them.

This movie “Desh Premi” makes us believe that one can just enter a place of such mass wedding and find himself getting married to the first girl that is available near by. But that is exactly what happens here. Amitabh Bachchan, running away from baddies, hides in a place where mass weddings are taking place and before he realises it, he finds himself married to the girl seated nearest him, who, who very conveniently happens to be Hema Malini.

With the coast clear ( and the mass wedding over), Amitabh Bachchan looks to slip awy, but Hema Malini insists on going with him, as she is now his wife. Amitabh Bachchan is not interested and wants to shake her off.

This song “jaate ho to jaao” then follows, where Hema Malini challenges the manhood of Amitabh Bachchan, saying that he is deserting her because he is not man enough to protect her from baddies.

This song, sung by Lata and written by Anand Bakshi, is a very hummable song, whose music was composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

I not only find the song funny, I find it romantic and sensuous as well. Of course, one needs to suspend one’s belief a bit by fully believing the way the two get married in the mass wedding hall.

Song-Jaate ho to jaao (Desh Premi) (1982) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

to jaao
jaao
arre jaao naa
jaate ho to jaao, par itna sun lo
jaate ho to jaao, par itna sun lo
jaate ho to jaao, par itna sun lo
thodi choodiyan pahanlo ik ghaghra silwalo
jao ji jao, par itna sun lo
thodi choodiyan pahanlo ik ghaghra silwalo
aurat ki hifazat jo kar na paaye
us mard ko kya kahte hain, yeh to batao
jao ji jao, par itna sun lo
thodi choodiyan pahanlo ik ghaghra silwalo

yoon bhi hamara mushkil hai guzaara
yoon bhi hamara mushkil hai guzaara
hammein gussa nahin aata, tumhein pyar nahin aata
kahne ko to Raja, bante ho mard tum
par mujhko maaf karna, aitbaar nahin aata
main abla, main naari, khade sar pe shikaari
tum darr ke door baithe kitne acche lagte ho
jao ji jao, par itna sun lo
thodi choodiyan pahanlo ik ghaghra silwalo

ye jag lutera, chhaya hai andhera
ye jag lutera, chhaya hai andhera
tum ghar se kyon nikle, tumhein ghar mein rahna tha
ghabrane lage kyun, sharmaane lage kyon
tum aise sharmwaale tote to kya kahna tha

us mard ko kya kahte hain ye to bataao
jao ji jao, par itna sun lo
thodi choodiyan pahanlo ik ghaghra silwalo
