Making religious movies has traditionally been regarded as an economically non viable proposition by Bollywood movie makers. So big producers or production houses rarely ventured into this field. So it was left to C grade movie makers to make religious movies.
And leading actors shied away from playing the lead roles in such movies fearing that if they were typecast as gods then public would not accept them in other roles. And they certainly had a point there.
Some three or four movies have been made on Ramayana. One of the erliest such movie called “Ram Rajya” has the distinction of being the only movie that Mahatma Gandhi ever watched in his life.
In 1961, a movie called “Sampoorna Ramayana” was made where Mahipal and Anita Guha, leading actors of C grade movies. played Ram and Sita respectively.
The movie, as expected did not attract much viewership since watching religious movies was regarded as infra dig those days and as such very few people actually watched this movie.
The songs of the movie did not become popular.Now, with the benefit of hindsight, one can see that the songs of this movie were quite good. Bharat Vyas was the lyricist and Vasant Desai was the music director of this movie and both had done a very good job in this movie.
Here is a very nice song from this song. It is sung by Lata and picturised on Sitaji (Anita Guha). It is a wonderful semi classical song that deserves to be much better known among music lovers.

I watched this movie as a young girl, because it was about my favorite subject, “Ramayan”. The songs are really melodious.
