#the Decade of Seventies – 1961 – 1970 #
————————————————————————

Today I am back with a song from the ‘1963’ movie ‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwaan’. In the past, I had presented three songs from this movie on the blog. That is sufficient to explain how much I like the songs of this movie.

I got to watch this movie during my growing up years in the mid-seventies or before end of the seventies. There used to be a weekly screening of movies at our ‘colony club’ where we were residing at that time. So I got to watch many movies of the ‘black & white’ era and many mythological and devotional movies too. ‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwaan’ is one of them. I forgot about the movie but its’ title song and couple of other songs stayed in my memory. Many years later when I became associated with this blog it was time again for me to revisit the songs of this movie. It was during this process that I became aware of other songs of this movie that I had forgotten. I have written in detail about this in my earlier posts while presenting other songs from this movie, hence I will not repeat that here.

I fondly remember this movie mainly because of its songs. However, when I checked the ‘annual list of Binaca Geetmala’ of that year I was surprised to note that none of the songs from this movie made it to this list. But then we can easily guess that the competition was tough during this ‘melodious’ decade of music of Hindi Cinema. And in thi particular year ‘1963’, there were movies like ‘Bandini’, ‘Dil Ek Mandir’, ‘Dil Hi To Hai’, ‘Ek Dil Sau Afsaane’, ‘Gehraa Daag’, ‘Gumraah’, ‘Hamraahi’, ‘Mere Mehboob’, ‘Meri Soorat Teri Aankhen’, ‘Mujhe Jeene Do’, ‘Parasmani’, ‘Phir Wohi Dil Laaya Hoon’, ‘Sehra’, ‘Shikaari’, ‘Tere Ghar Ke Saamne’, ‘Taaj-Mahal’ etc and many of them had compositions created by the ‘greats’ of Hindi Film Music. The top three songs from this year were ‘jo waada kiya wo nibhaana padega’ from ‘Taj Mahal’, ‘dil ek mandir hai’ title song, and ‘in hawaaon mein in fizaaon mein’ from ‘Gumraah’ on rank 1, 2 & 3 respectively.

There were total ‘89’ movies released during this year. The overall average of movies released per year during this decade 1961-1970 was 94.2 films per year (considering the number of released movies i.e. 942 movies).

Year Number of Movies (released movies only)
1961 104
1962 93
1963 89
1964 99
1965 100
1966 103
1967 83
1968 72
1969 97
1970 102

Out of these eighty-nine movies following were the movies falling in the category of mythological-devotional movies.

Movie Title Category Director
Dev Kanya Mythological S.N. Tripathi
Harishchandra Taramati Mythological Adarsh
Jai Jagannath Devotional Not known
Kan Kan Mein Bhagwaan Devotional Babubhai Mistry
Naag Jyoti Mythological Shantilal Soni
Naag Mohini Mythological Shantilal Soni

‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwaan-1963’ was directed by Babubhai Mistry for ‘Roopkalaa Pictures’. It was produced by Mahipatray Shah. It had Anita Guha, Mahipal, with Ramsingh, Krishnakumari, Kummo Tripathi, and Raja Nene. They were supported by Ratnamala, T.N. Sinha, Prakash, Yunus Parwez, Mridula, Punam Kapoor, Baijnath, Ajit, Rehana, Uma Dutt, R.S. Dube, Munshi, Shekhar, Chand, Devchand, Lal Bahadur, Kishore, Dilawar Khan, Baby Chand, Burhan, Jugal Kishore, Dinanath, Vijay Kumar and Master Aziz.

The story of this movie was written by Vishwanath Pande, C.K. Mast, Pandit Madhur, and S.M. Abbas. Editing of this movie was done by Ramchandra Mahadik.

‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwan-1963’ had nine songs, all written by Pandit Bharat Vyas. The music was composed by Pandit Shivaram. Mahendra Kapoor, Manna Dey, Mukesh and Suman Kalyanpur had given their voices to the songs in this movie. So far, seven songs from this movie have already been posted on the blog. The last song was posted on more than a year ago on 16.02.2023. The today’s song was noted by me then only and it is lying ready since then with us. Today’s song is the penultimate song from this movie and I hope to take this movie to ‘Yippee-land’ soon 🙂 …

The song under discussion takes placehappens at the climax of the movie where the hero of the movie proves that ‘god’ exists everywhere. And the upper-caste people who believe in ‘casteism’ and practice ‘untouchability’ realise their mistake of prohibiting lower caste people from entering the temples.

Mahipal lip-syncs the song in the voice of Mahendra Kapoor. Anita Guha and many others join him in the chorus. Many other artists are also visible in the picturisation of this song.

In the year 1963 actor Mahipal appeared in movies like ‘Dev Kanya’, ‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwaan’, ‘Maaya Mahal’, ‘Naag Jyoti’, ‘Naag Mohini’, ‘Parasmani’, ‘Sunehri Nagin’. Anita Guha was his co-actress’ in three movies viz. ‘Dev Kanya’, ‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwaan’ and ‘Naag Jyoti’ and actress Helen was his co-star in Maaya Mahal and Sunehri Nagin. I would once again like to mention here that I have always loved to watch movies of actor Mahipal. Navrang-1959’ is my most favorite movie of them all. 🙂

Let us now listen to and enjoy one more song from the movie ‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwaan-1963’.

Here is the fifth song from “Poornima”(1965) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Suman Kalyanpur. Bharat Vyas is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

The song is picturised as a stage dance song on Meena Kumari, Anita Guha and others. Towards the end of the picturisation, a stanza from another song of the movie ( gori nain tumhaare kya kehne sung by Mukesh is artficially inserted.

It is one case where the video version, even though longer than the audio version is not authentic. It is the audio version, a Suman Kalyanpur solo song, which is the authentic version of the song. The video version may give the impression that it is a duet, but it is not.

Lyrics of the song and other details were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 34
—————————————————————————

The rate of posting of songs in the blog ten years ago was quite similar to the present day rate of posting, even though things were obviously much different in 2010 than what they are now. This day ten years ago (6 june 2010) was a Sunday, when the final of French open tennis tournament was played and Rafael Nadal won his fifth French open title defeating Robin Söderling of Sweden in straight sets. Now a days, no sporting events are taking place.

I find it interesting to note that the world was suffering from the pandemic of Swine Flu between January 2009 till August 2010. But India was not affected as badly as we are today affected with Corona Virus. There was no lockdown of any kind those days, though night running of trains was suspended in Naxalite affected Orissa-Jharkhand-West Bengal region (SE Rly) those days after Maoist insurgents caused derailment of Jnaneshwari express on 28 may 2010. 148 passengers had died in this ghastly accident near Jhargram.

Three songs were posted in the blog on 06.06.2010:-

Song Movie title-Year Remarks
Deewaane aa zaraa nazrein milaa Badaa Aadmi-1961 All songs covered on the blog
Jawaab nahin gore mukhde par til kaale kaa Kangan-1959 All songs covered on the blog
Aaja mere meet re sun ke mere geet re Jahaan Sati Wahaan Bhagwaan- 1965 02 of 05 songs covered

As can be seen, only one movie out of the above three movie still has a few songs left to be covered. In other words, it is the only candidate for “Blog Ten Year Challenge” today.

This movie, “Jahaan Sati Wahaan Bhagwaan”(1965) was directed by Satish Kumar for K S Pictures, Bombay. This bhakti pradhaan movie had Prithviraj, Anita Guha, Mahipal, Krishna Kumari(North), B.M.Vyas, Sulochana Chatterji, Mohan Choti, Niranjan Sharma, Minaxi, Madhumati, Babloo, Praveen Paul, Habib, Mishri Lal, S.K.Sham, Shri Bhagwan, R.S.Dube, Santosh Kumar, Polson, Dinesh, Dalda, Shyam, and child stars Rippy, Rikky, Pinky etc in it.

The movie had five songs in it Two songs from the movie have been covered in the past.
Here are their details:-

Song Posted On
Din Beete ladakpan ke 12.03.2010
Aaja mere meet re sun ke mere geet re 06.06.2010

Today’s song is the third song from this movie to be posted on the blog. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. This movie had two lyricists, viz B D Mishra and Madhukar Rajasthani but the lyricist of this song is not known. Music is composed by music director trio Lala Asar Sattar.

The song is picturised as a Lord Shiv Stuti dance song on Anita Guha and others. Among others, Meenaxi and Shirley can also be seen.

Catalyst behind this “Blog Ten Year Challenge” song was Avinash Scrapwala. He got Prakashchandra’s lyrics and also provided the Devnagri script lyrics of the song, while Lyrics of this song were sent by Prakashchandra. This happens to be his 1100th lyrics contribution in the blog. Quite an achievement by Prakashchandra. Our congratulations to this silent and prolific “Kasturi Mrig” contributor to the blog.

Today 24th December 2018 is the ninety-fourth (24 December 1924 – 31 July 1980) birth anniversary of the ‘divine voice’ Mohammad Rafi Saab.
And today 24th December also happens to be the birth anniversary actor Mahipal (24 December 1919 – 15 May 2005).
I have very deep respect and great admiration for both of them in my heart and it will be until we are associated with Hindi Films and Hindi Film Music.

It was in 2017 that I came to know about the birth anniversary of Mahipal ji and its falling on 24th December (because of this article on BHD by our own Shishir ji) – the same date – we have birth anniversary of Rafi Saab. So, last year I presented a song from the movie ‘Maharaja Vikram-1966’ here.

This year too I wish to present a song and thus was looking a song sung by Rafi Saab and lip synced by Mahipal. I think most of the songs may be have already been covered and I was able to find a ‘duet’ sung by Rafi Saab and Sudha Malhotra and lip synced on screen by Mahipal and Anita Guha.

This song is from the 1957 movie ‘Pawanputra Hanuman’.

It was directed by Babubhai Mistry for ‘Basant Pictures’. It was presented by Homi Wadia for ‘Wadia Brothers Productions’.

It had S.N. Tripathi, Mahipal, Anita Guha, B.M. Vyas, Krishna Kumari, Ratnamala, Heera Sawant, Indira Bansal, Korega, Amirbai Karnataki, Praveen Paul, Mumtaz, Master Prithvi, Helen, Kanchanmala, Shiela Vaz, Samar Roy, Dalpat, Sudesh, Ramshastri, Bhujbal Singh Uma Dutt, S.K. Singh, Shri Bhagwan, Ajit Kumar, R.S. Dubey, Abdullah, Yadav, Julian and others.

This movie had as many as ten songs composed by Chitragupta and written by G.S. Nepali (Six songs) and Saraswati Kumar Deepak (four songs).

Asha Bhonsle, Geeta Dutt, Manna Dey, Mohmmad Rafi, Shamshad Begam, Sudha Malhotra and Usha Mangeshkar had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Today’s song is written by Gopal Singh Nepali.

Actually, I came across this song as a song from the movie ‘Hanuman Chalisa – 1969’ on YouTube. As I was not aware of the details of this movie, I asked for the movie page from HFGK Vol IV from my daughter. Going through the details as mentioned in HFGK it is mentions that: –
“As per information from the production house ‘Basant Pictures, Bombay’ (1) this film was a collection of some parts of the previous movies produced by them, (2) also including songs from those movies, (3) and this movie ‘Hanuman Chalisa-1969’ was not a full-length feature film.
That made me more curious to know about its songs (if any) presented on the blog and if the today’s song was already there.
From the list I could not found any songs on the blog and keep repeatedly searching for titles with ‘Hanuman Chalisa’… until I find a link on YT which mentions the name of the movie as ‘Pawanputra Hanuman-1957/ Hanuman Chalisa-1969’ for this song ‘mere Raam kahaan ho tum …’

Three songs from this movie ‘Pawanputra Hanuman-1957’ have already been posted on the blog wherein our two respected Seniors Arun ji and Sadanand ji have shared two and one posts respectively sharing songs of this movie.

Let us now enjoy the today’s song sung by Rafi Saab and Sudha Malhotra and performed on screen by Mahipal and Anita Guha.

dukhta hai dil jiska

mera sansaar rota hai
hanste ho taaron tum
kisi ka pyaar rota hai

muska raha chanda

kisi ka pyaar rota hai
mera sansaar rota hai

Missing Films of 1960s – 55
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Today’s debut film is Shri Ram Bharat Milan, from 1965.

Today is also the birth anniversary of Kavi Pradeep, one of the leading poets who wrote for Hindi films, during the 1940s, 50s and 60s.

The film is produced under the banner of RM Art Productions Bombay, and is directed by Mani Bhai Vyas. The cast of actors listed for this film are Mahipal, Anita Guha, Nirupa Roy, Rajkumar, Aruna Irani, B M Vyas, Niranjan Sharma, Vanmala, Prithviraj, Balakram, Sulochana. The listings show that there are six songs in this film, all written by Kavi Pradeep. The music for the film is composed by Pandit Shivram. This particular song is a twin dance song sung by Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar and supported by chorus.

Time was 1960s, and religious films still had a popular following. And the producers community also had an ongoing interest, to continue making films based on our scriptures and ancient history, ensuring that these stories do not fade away from public memory. Their objective was also to ensure that the teachings of the epic stories associated with religion, continue to be passed on to the newer generations. It was a matter of personal and collective responsibility that the film makers and other artists would continue to get together and make such films. Sadly, in the recent decades, this awareness and this responsibility has become a thing of the past.

In 1965, two films were released narrating the story of brotherly love between Sri Ram and Sri Bharat. The other film is titled ‘Bharat Milap’. That film has already made its debut on our blog.

The scene enacted in this song is during the initial days of the vanvaas – the sojourn of Sri Ram to the forests for a period of 14 years, accompanied by Sita ji and Lakshman Bhaiya. As they reach the banks of River Ganga, they have to seek help of the boatmen to cross the river. This episode is a one of the most emotional and well documented episodes in the Ramayan. Nishad Raj Guh, the chief of the boatmen community, and Kevat, one of the boatmen in this community, play very significant roles in this episode.

As is also given in the description of this episode in the Ramayan, the boatmen community do not want Sri Ram to leave their humble village, and request Him to consider staying with them, for the duration of the forest sojourn. But of course Sri Ram has other things in mind, that He has to accomplish during these fourteen years. In this clip from the film, this request to Sri Ram is being presented as a dance. The two lead dancers – I am not able to place a name to these faces, and I request other knowledgeable readers to please help to identify them.

A very interesting thing about the construction of the song. The song is presented in two stanzas. As one hears them, and then also views the lyrics, one realizes that each stanza is quite long (yes, a five plus minutes song has just two stanzas). And the construction of the stanzas is quite complex. Kudos to both the songwriter and the music director to build a very attractive song with such a complex composition.

Listen to and enjoy is delightful song of request, as the boatmen families are requesting to Sri Ram to make their village as His abode for the duration of the vanvaas. They are promising that they will build a city for Him, as beautiful as Ayodhya, His own home town. And they also promise that they will also bring the Saryu river to this place.

A wonderful song to enjoy.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

Today we will have a song from the 1957 L.V. Prasad directed Meena Kumari- Raj Kapoor- Shyama starrer ‘Sharada’ – written as ‘Shaarda’ by Atulji in the ‘List-of songs-moviewise’. It is mentioned as ‘Sharada’ in the filmography of Meena Kumari (a rule in English grammar says that proper nouns can be written with any spelling, specially there is no right or wrong spellings as far as Indian words are concerned).
