Yahi to hai wo yahi to hai

When it comes to the movie “Solva saal” (1958), most people are familiar with just one song from this movie, viz “hai apna dil to aawaara”. This song, sung by Hemant Kumar was the most popular song of that year.
Other songs of this movie came nowhere in popularity stakes. But they were nice songs on their own merit. In fact, the movie itself was a very nice movie where Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman star in a lovely adaptation of “It Happened One Night”.
The song “hai apna dil to aawara” was sung by Hemant Kumar and picturised on Dev Anand. This other song that I am posting here this time was also picturised on Dev Anand, but this song was sung by Rafi. So it is a good trivia question, viz. name the movie where both Hemant Kumar and Rafi gave playback for Dev Anand.
The picturisation of this song is wonderful. Waheeda Rehman, who planned to run away from her home with a valuable necklace to get married to her boyfriend finds her boyfriend ditching her and decamping with the necklace. Dev Anand, a news reporter , who was pursuing them, was at hand when the boy friend runs away in a taxi. Though Waheeda Rehman is hostile to Dev Anand, she has no option but to request him to help her locate the fugitive. Dev Anand agrees and the two hail a taxi and reach the place where the taxi drivers gather, hoping to find the taxi driver of the fugitive there.
While going there, the taxi driver overhears the conversation of Dev Anand and Waheeda Rahman and smells a rat. When they arrive at the taxi depot, the driver consults his colleagues about the suspicious conduct of his passengers, and as decided in the consultation, he calls Dev Anand out of the taxi.
Dev saab comes out to him, and the driver, not knowing how to breach the subject says- “it is very hot today.”.
“what, you called me out to tell me that”- Dev saab asks.
The drivers takes Dev saab into a corner, and asks his in whispers- ‘Who is she?”
Dev saab, takes the driver further into the corner and informs him, as if revealing a state secret- “she is a….girl”.
The driver tells Dev Saab that he himself had already deduced that she indeed was a girl. He was asking for futher details.
Upon this, Dev saab bursts into this song.
I have listened to this song in the past, and I did not pay much attention to it at that time. But on listening to it again this time, I must say I began to look at this song with more respect. It is a very fine song on its own merit , so what if this song did not become very popular at that time. It is sung beautifully. Majrooh Sultanpuri has come up with a nice song. The music of S D Burman is wonderful. I feel that this music was actually composed by R D Burman, his son, who was assistant to his father those days. I notice that the tune of this song is same that R D Burman used more than two decades later in “Barsaat Ki ek raat” (1980).
It is a lovely song, and its picturisation is lovely. It is must watch song.

This is now one of my favorite films of all time. And the songs are picturized so well, every one a gem too 🙂
