Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat rangeeli Hogi raat

Posted on: July 22, 2009

“Aah” (1953), not to be confused with “Aag”( 1948) had some lovely songs composed by Shankar Jaikishan, which were equally nicely picturised.

Here is the poignant song “Raja Ki aayegi baraat rangeeli hogi raat, magan mai naachoongi”. The raja here is Raj Kapoor, and he is supposed to come with his baraat to marry some other girl, whereas it is Nargis who woul like to be in that girl’s place. In this song, Nargis tryies to show her “happiness” at the proposed alliance, but obviously what she is singing is not what she is feeling inside.

The song is beautfully sung by Lata, and nicely picturised on Nargis. Shailendra has come with superb lyrics, that capture the feelings of Nargis so wonderfully well.

Song-raja ki aayegi baraat (Aah) (1953) Singer-Lata, Lyrics- Shailendra, MD- Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

aa aa
aa aa
raja ki aayegi baraat
raja ki aayegi baraat
rangeeli hogi raat
magan main naachoongi
ho magan main naachoongi
raja ki aayegi baraat
rangeeli hogi raat
magan main naachoongi
ho magan main naachoongi
raja ki aayegi baraat

raja ke maathe tilak lagegaa
raani ke maang sindoor
raani ke maang sindoor
main bhi apne man ki asha
poori karoongi zaroor
poori karoongi zaroor
mehndi se peele honge haath
saheliyon ke saath
magan main naachoongi
ho magan main naachoongi
raja ki aayegi baraat

raani ke sang raja doli sajaake
chale jaayenge pardes
haan
raani ke sang raja doli sajaake
chale jaayenge pardes
jab jab unki yaad aayegi
dil pe lagegi thes
dil pe lagegi thes
nainon me hogi barsaat
andheri hogi raat
akeli main naachoongi
haay akeli main naachoongi
raja ki aayegi baraat
rangeeli hogi raat
magan main naachoongi
ho magan main naachoongi
raja ki aayegi baraat

Hmm..the song that I used to be teased with a thousand times as a young boy. I had not heard the Lata version but my friends would constantly tease me with this song…”raja ki aayegi baarat”.
Finally I did see the movie. 🙂

There were a couple of other songs also that they used to tease me with. I noticed that they have not been posted yet. I request you to post them too :
– “meri pyari beheniya…bhaiya raja bajayega baaja” (Sacha Jhootha)
– “nazar lagi raja torey bangley pe” (Kala Pani)

That is what happens when you have a name like Raja. 🙂

Yes, there are so many songs with the word “Raja” in them. And then there are movies whose title has the word Raja in them. In fact there was a movie called “Raja” (1975) too.

I saw this film recently and was pleasantly surprised. It is a lovely story with so many beautiful songs. This is one of Raj Kapoor’s films which has not recieved the attention that it should. I feel that in this, he was gently poking fun at melodramatic characters who believe they have to make the ‘grand sacrifice’.

Watching the songs of this movie, I too am coming to the conclusion that this movie was a nice movie that I should watch.

very well sung by Lata, equally well synced by Nargis with superb music by Shanker Jaikishan.

In my opinion it is the best scene of the movie, with Nargis’ feelings beautifully expressed.

It is not ‘Doli Saake”..it should be ‘doli sajaake’ ..right ?
