Ek chaand aasmaan pe hai

Posted on: October 9, 2009

I had once mentioned that the version of song seen in the movie and heard in the records was often different because they were recorded on two separate occassions. Imagine a great song being recorded not once but twice ! Once for the movie sound track, and once for the record company.

Most of the time, the same voices would record for both the versions, but sometimes, even the voices would change.

Here is one such song from “Aadmi” (1968). Naushad, the music director got the song recorded (for the record company) in the voices of Rafi (for Dilip Kumar) and Talat Mehmood( for Manoj Kumar). But when the song was to be recorded for the sound track, Manoj Kumar remonstrated with Naushad with the plea that Mahendra Kapoor should sing for him. Naushad was forced to bow down and he recorded the song for movie sound track in the voices of Rafi and Mahendra Kapoor.

But what about the record version which was already recorded in Rafi and Talat Mehmood’s voices ? Instead of scrapping the record or re recording for the record company again, Naushad was asked by the right holders ( the movie producers themselves) to carry out a random survey to find out which version was liked more by the listeners. The result of the survey showed that most of the listeners preferred the Rafi-Talat Mehmood version. This vindicated Naushad’s earlier stand. The movie version continued with Mahendra Kapoor’s voice whereas records were sold with Talat Mehmood’s voice.

Here are both the versions of the song. The picturised version is a piano song picturised as a party song on Dilip Kumar, Manoj Kumar ,Waheeda Rehman, Sulochana Latkar and others. Lyrics of both the versions are identical.

Lyrics

Lyrics

kaisi haseen aaj bahaaron ki raat hai
ek chaand aasmaan pe hai
ek mere saath hai
o dene waale toone to koyi kami na ki
ab kisko kyaa mila
ye muqaddar ki baat hai

chhaaya hai husn o ishq pe
ik rang e bekhudi
chhaaya hai husn o ishq pe
ik rang e bekhudi
aate hain zindagi mein ye
aalam kabhi kabhi
har gham ko bhool jaao
khushi ki baaraat hai
ek chaand aasmaan pe hai
ek mere saath hai

aayi hai wo bahaar ke naghme ubal pade
aisi khushi mili hai ke aansoo nikal pade
hothon pe hain duaayen
magar dil pe haath hai
ab kisko kyaa mila
ye muqaddar ki baat hai

masti simat ke pyaar ke gulshan mein aa gayi
masti simat ke pyaar ke gulshan mein aa gayi
meri khushi bhi aapke daaman mein aa gayi
bhanwraa kali se door nahin saath saath hai
ab kisko kyaa mila
ye muqaddar ki baat hai

aisi haseen aaj bahaaron ki raat hai
ek chaand aasmaan pe hai
ek mere saath hai

This doubt existed for the past couple of years. I believed it was Talat, but recent association with YT mentions as Mahendra Kapoor. Thanks for dispelling the doubt. In either case, it is a beautiful song… although and of course I prefer Talat version. Regards.

This is the Talat sahab – Rafi sahab song.

Its universally accepted that the Talat version is better than the Mahendra Kapoor version.

I like both the versions, as I felt, Talat sahab’s voice was not suited to Manoj Kumar.

Thanks for the audio link of Talat Mehmood version. Now I have included both the versions.

I too feel that Talat Mehmood’s singing does not suit Manoj Kumar and so Mahendra Kapoor’s version for Manoj Kumarfor the movie is quite decent. In any case Talat Mehmood’s singing career had almost come to an end and his kind of singing no longer suited the requirement for the mainstream songs of late 1960s.

Please remember that Talat sang two playback songs for Manoj Kumar – but Manoj did not protest then! Jab Chhaaye Kabhi saawan ki Ghata from Reshmi Roomal and Baaghon Mein Khilte Hain Phool from Suhag Sindoor!!

Manoj Kumar was a newcomer at that time and so he was in no position to pick and chose his playback singers.

I love the Rafi-Talat version of this song.
This song can be included in the ‘piano song’ category too.
