Ye shama to jali roshni ke liye

“Aaya Saawan Jhoom Ke” (1969) is one movie that is largely remembered for its songs more than for anything else. At least that is true for me. The fact that I have never watched the movie certainly helps. From the picturisation of songs in this movie, I get the impression that Dharmendra does most of his singing in gatherings where he sings songs addressed to Asha Parekh.
I have posted two songs from this movie, and here is another song from this movie. This song, like the others, is a party song, as I suspected. Dharmendra is standing behind a microphone and singing a song addressing Asha Parekh and Asha ji is rightly fidgety on being singled out for this attention.
Rafi is the singer, and like always, he is at his divine best here. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and Laxmikant Pyarelal composed the music. And it has been suggested that Dharmendra too looks at his best- at his Greek god best, as many would say. And Asha Parekh too looked at her best as the addressee of the song.

Song-Ye shama to jali roshni ke liye (Aaya Saawan Jhoom Ke) (1969) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics- Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal
Lyrics
ye shamaa to jali roshni ke liye
is shamaa se kahin aag lag jaaye to
ye shamaa kyaa kare
ye shamaa to jali roshni ke liye
is shamaa se kahin aag lag jaaye to
ye shamaa kyaa kare
ye hawaa to chali saans le har koyi
ghar kisi kaa ujad jaaye aandhi mein to
ye hawaa kyaa kare
chal ke poorab se thandi hawaa aa gayi
chal ke poorab se thandi hawaa aa gayi
uth ke parwat se kaali ghataa chhaa gayi
ye ghataa to uthi pyaas sabki bujhi
aashiyaan pe kisi ke girin bijliyaan to
ye ghataa kyaa kare
ye shamaa to jali roshni ke liye
ho ho ho
poochhtaa hoon main sabse koyi de jawaab
poochhtaa hoon main sabse koyi de jawaab
nakhudaa ki bhalaa kyaa khataa hai janaab
naakhudaa le ke saahil ke jaanib chalaa
doob jaaye safinaa jo manjhdhaar mein to
naakhudaa kyaa kare
ye shamaa to jali roshni ke liye
wo jo uljhan si tere khayaalon mein hai
wo jo uljhan si tere khayaalon mein hai
wo ishaaraa bhi mere sawaalon mein hai
ye nigaah to mili dekhne ke liye
par kahin ye nazar dhokhaa khaa jaaye to
ye nigaah kyaa kare
ye shamaa to jali roshni ke liye
is shamaa se kahin aag lag jaaye to
ye shamaa kyaa kare
hmm hmm

This song is pure eye candy. Aruna Irani is at her prettiest too. This, I think, is the best song in the movie. There were a lot of running around the bush songs too which I didn’t like as much.

Sathiya Nahi Jana Ki Jee Na Lage(running aroung bushes–the real thing), Rama Duhai(garden-bushes song), Aaya sawan jhoom ke (village dance), Maajhi chal (you guessed it, boat song). There may also have been a Rajendranath song.
Mere Hamdam mere dost has lots of nice Rafi/Dharmendra running around trees songs.
Maine Dekha Ek Sapna is a somewhat lesser known and unusual song (you tell me if that’s right) from Samadhi — also had Dharam ji running around bushes. I love it.

Atul, I fell for Dharmendra I think after watching this song. Rafi’s voice was such a good match for Dharmendra. In fact, any time I hear a Rafi song now, I imagine Dharmendra singing.
