Thahariye hosh mein aa loon to chale jaayiyegaa

I have listened to this song many times and liked it, but all this while I had no clue about its details. This is one of those songs that have gone on to get implanted on the psyche of those who grew up listening to this and other songs of those days.
Now I have become aware of the details of this song. I already knew that Rafi was the singer, but now I know that the song had another voice in it and that was the voice of Suman Kalyanpur. I also found that this song is from a movie called “Muhabbat Isko Kehte Hain” (1965). This is not a movie that rings any bells. When I find about the actors on whom this song is picturised, I realise why this movie did not ring a bell. This song is picturised on Shashi Kapoor and Nanda ! That is why. 🙂
The song is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri, and what lyrics ! Even a poetry challenged person like me can tell that the lyrics are high quality poetry. And the music is composed by Khayyam, who got very few opportunities and he often came up with some memorable songs, as he does on this occasion.

Lyrics
Thahariye hosh mein aa loon
to chale jaayiyegaa
hmm hmm
aapko dil mein bithaa loon
to chale jaayiyegaa
hmm hmm
aapko dil mein bithaa loon
kab talaq rahiyegaa yoon
door ki chaahat banke
kab talaq rahiyegaa yoon
door ki chaahat banke
dil mein aa jaayiye
iqraar-e-muhabbat banke
apni taqdeer banaa loon
to chale jaayiyegaa
hmm hmm
aapko dil mein bithaa loon
to chale jaayiyegaa
aapko dil mein bithaa loon
mujhko iqraar-e-muhabbat pe hayaa aati hai
mujhko iqraar-e-muhabbat pe hayaa aati hai
baat kahte huye gardan meri jhuk jaati hai
dekhiye sar ko jhukaa loon to chale jaaiyegaa
dekhiye sar ko jhukaa loon to chale jaayiyegaa
haay, aapko dil mein bithaa loon
aisi kyaa sharm zaraa paas to aane deeje
aisi kyaa sharm zaraa paas to aane deeje
rukh se bikhri huyi zulfon ko hataane deeje
pyaas aankhon ki bujhaa loon
to chale jaayiyegaa
thahariye hosh mein aa loon
to chale jaayiyegaa
aapko dil mein bithaa loon
to chale jaayiyegaa
aapko dil mein bithaa loon

A song that is ‘madhur’ and quite cute even visually. the delicacy of emotions etched in the poetry are very well portrayed by the lead pair. Compare this to the new age songs….
this movie was shown quite often on Doordarshan during the black and white days of TV

Here is a song that is best listened to, and not ‘looked’ at. Very very romantic.
