Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Jaataa hoon main mujhe ab naa bulaanaa

Posted on: June 10, 2010

I have mentioned the fact that most people (at least I) are only aware of the more popular songs from a movie and they often miss out on some real gems that the lesser known songs of these movies often turn out to be.

Take the movie “Daadi Maa” (1966) for example. 99% people are aware of only one song from this movie and this song is the iconic song Usko nahin dekha hamne kabhi.

But this movie has other great songs as well, which unfortunately got overshadowed by the above mentioned song.

Just yesterday, I stumbled upon a superb song from “Daadi Maa” (1966). This song is not only a gem of a song, but it is a trivia buff’s delight as well.

I have not watched the movie but from the picturisation of this song as well as the other song, I can guess that the domestic servant of the household, who was treated as a family member, is humiliated and forced to leave the household. The domestic servant is rightly heartbroken, and he vows never to come back to the place where he was treated with dignity earlier, but which no longer welcomed him.

That way, this song belongs to the genre of songs that I call “chal ud jaa re panchhi” genre. Most songs of this genre are sung by Rafi and they are are songs that can melt hearts even today, decades after these songs were recorded.

This song is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and music is composed by Roshan. The song is picturised on Dr Kashinath Ghanekar, who played the domestic servant. It was his first and last foray into Hindi movies and he did not meet with much success, but that does not mean that he was a nobody. He was a megastar is Marathi movies. And he unfortunately died young, while he was ruling the roost in Marathi movies.

Here is this superb song from “Daadi Maa” (1966) which deserves to be better known to music lovers.

Song-Jaataa hoon main mujhe ab naa bulaanaa (Daadi Maa) (1966) Singer-Rafi , Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Roshan

Lyrics

jaataa hoon main mujhe
ab naa bulaanaa
meri yaad bhi apne
dil mein na laanaa
meraa hai kyaa meri
manzil na koyi thikaanaa
jaataa hoon main

pyaasaa thaa bachpan jawaani bhi
meri pyaasi
peechhe ghamon ki gali
aage udaasi
pyaasaa thaa bachpan jawaani bhi
meri pyaasi
peechhe ghamon ki gali
aage udaasi
ho ho ho
main tanhaayi kaa raahi
koyi apnaa naa begaanaa
mujhe ab na bulaanaa
meri yaad bhi apne
dil mein na laanaa
meraa hai kyaa meri
manzil na koyi thikaanaa

mujhko hansi bhi mili
saaye liye dukh ke
khul ke na royaa kisi
kaandhe pe jhuk ke
mujhko hansi bhi mili
saaye liye dukh ke
khul ke na royaa kisi
kaandhe pe jhuk ke
ho ho ho
meraa jeewan bhi kyaa hai
adhooraa saa ik afsaanaa
mujhe ab na bulaanaa
meri yaad bhi apne
dil mein na laanaa
meraa hai kyaa meri
manzil na koyi thikaanaa
jaataa hoon main

thaa pyaar kaa ik diyaa
wo bhi bujhaa daalaa
dhundhlaa saa bhi kahin
kyun ho ujaalaa
thaa pyaar kaa ik diyaa
wo bhi bujhaa daalaa
dhundhlaa saa bhi kahin
kyun ho ujaalaa
ho ho ho
ab un yaadon se kah do
meri duniyaa mein naa aanaa
mujhe ab na bulaanaa
meri yaad bhi apne
dil mein na laanaa
meraa hai kyaa meri
manzil na koyi thikaanaa

This is a lovely song. I have only heard this before, never seen the picturisation. Did not know it was from this movie.

[…] For example, let us discuss “Daadi Maa” (1967). As we all know, for most people this movie is synonymous with the immortal “Maa” song contained in this movie, viz. Usko nahin dekha hamne kabhi, which is one of the ultimate songs of its genre, but this movie had other songs which may be lesser known, but no less outstanding. I had already posted one such lesser known but superb song from this movie, viz. Jaataa hoon main mujhe ab naa bulaanaa […]
