Madan Mohan is often associated with serious ghazal songs sung by Lata. But Madan Mohan has composed all kinds of songs including light hearted and non serious songs sung by several singers. In fact, the Madan Mohan song that climbed the highest in Binaca Geetmala annual charts in his lifetime was not a ghazal by Lata but a mela song by Asha Bhonsle. It was the hugely popular Jhumka gira re Bareli ke bazaar me from “Mera Saayaa” (1966).
Here is another Madan Mohan song of a similar genre. It is a stage cum dance competition song where Yogita Bali and Laxmi Chhaaya compete on the stage. This song is from “Parwaanaa” (1971) and it is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Parveen Sultana. Kaifi Azmi is the lyricist.
This song is a wonderful song from a movie that unfortunately met the standard fate of a Madan Mohan movie, viz it flopped at the box office. But the songs, like in all Madan Mohan movies, hold their own.

Laxmi Chhaya was very agile and energetic dancer..
Unfortunately she died quite young (around 55 yrs.) in 2004 because of breast cancer.

Thanks for the post, thought i disagree that it is a ‘competitive dance’. It’s more a ‘duet’ than a ‘duel’. IMO the classic dance competition between vaijyantimala and padmini is one of the best. another would be the one between laxmi chhaya and madhumati in the film suhaagraat.

Btw, could you help me find a song that I have been looking for ages. Some old hindi movie where a dancer is challenged in public by another dancer (both female), probably in some Maharaja’s court. They compete on their dancing skills which also included a pseudo fight with swords and daggers. At the end, the challenger wins the competition.
I don’t know which movie it is from or the two actors and hence it has been difficult to find. Can you recall any such movie?

I don`t know exactly what you are finding, but One courtroom dance competition between Vyjayanthimala & another female dancer from Lekh Tondon directed movie “Amrapali(1966)”, comes close to the explaination you have given, try that movie and find it out.
