Ho more gore badan pe gulaabi nazariyaa na daal

Posted on: September 5, 2010

Regular Hindi movie watchers may have certainly watched a few historical/mythological movies involving Kings. In these movies,King and his ministers would assemble in a Raj Darbaar (King’s court) the way today’s Business houses have their General Body Meeting. What is common in all these meetings is that after the meeting, there would be often by an entertainment programme. Today, the location of entertainment may be different from that of the meeting, but that was not the case in historical times. The entertainment programme would take place in the Raj darbaar itself.

The entertainment woul often consist of a musical competition between two eminent singers, viz between Baiju Baawra and Tansen, for example. But there was an even better and more polular mode of entertainment for them. And that was a dance performance by a female dancer. And soon enough, there would be a pair of female dancers, dancing in synchronisation.Synchronised swimming (by two female swimmers) has been introduced in 1980s, but synchronised dancing (by two female singers) was introduced in Hindi movies in 1960s itself.

I have posted several such synchronised dance songs in this blog. In this form of dance, the two female dancers would be dressed similarly, or in complementing colours and they would be unrecognisable from each other, at least to untrained eyes like mine.

Here is an ultimate synchronised dance. I call it ultimate, because of two reasons. One is that this song has Helen in it, and secondly, the two dancers in this song indeed bear great resemblance to each other , since the other dancer is Madhumati, a Helen clone.

This dance is from “Sikandar e Azam” (1965), the movie that gave us the memorable patriotic song Jahan daal daal par sone ki chidiya karti hai baseraa. This is a movie on Sikandar, viz Alexamder the great. So this Raj Darbaar in question is that of Alexander the Great, no less ! He, after invading India and appointing the local kings as his vassals, needs some entertainment break and he is entertained by this dance of Helen and Madhumati.

This dance is proof that westerners were fond of Helen’s dance even in the past. And that Alexander the great had beaten Memsaab the great by several centuries in feeling the love for Helen’s dance!

The song is sung by sisters Asha Bhonsle and Usha Mangeshkar. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist of this creative song. Hansraj Bahl composed the music.

LOL!!!! I am honored to be in the same sentence as Alexander the great 😀 Especially as played by Dara!

Yes, Dara Singh and Helen in the same song. If only somehow Shammi Kapoor and Mumtaz too had made it to this song then it would have become a dream come true song for you.

That’s interesting, Dara plays Alexander. But you know Alexander was short and Puru was a giant–over 7ft tall if some descriptions are to be believed (And Dara might well be one of Puru’s descendants. And Dharam too which might explain his hunkiness. :))

All these supposedly big physique Indians could not stop supposedly smaller physique invaders from invading India on a regular basis. 😀
