Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Raadhike toone bansuri churaayi

Posted on: September 12, 2010

By now, readers of this blog may have realised that my posts for the day is following a set pattern, viz. all of them are songs composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

Indeed, that is a conscious decision on my part. Today is 12 th september and it was on 12 september,1971 that Jaikishan had died at an young age of 41. By that young age, he, along with Shankar had achieved a great deal. Shankar-Jaikishan brand helped launch movies and helped make the careers of many leading actors of 1950s and 1960s. Shankar Jaikishan in fact were the most prolific and most influential composers in Hindi movies who were much admired and looked upon to for inspiration by many younger music directors.

Shankar Jaikishan’s music is a delight to listen to even today, some four decades after the Shankar Jaikishan pair was separated this day.

Here is a fantastic song from “Beti Bete” (1964). It is such a delightfully sung and picturised song. Rafi is the singer and the song is picturised as a stage song on Sunil Dutt and B Saroja Devi. This song is a semi classical song (based on Raag Darbari). Shailendra is the lyricist.

What a wonderful song it is !

Love the songs in Beti bete–this one too.
Another excellent Rafi song from the movie is “Aaj kal mein dhal gaya”.

There are very very few classical songs in Bollywood–these semi-classical ones are the closest we get.

And Saroja Devi looks like VJ here with all that makeup.

hi sophy
indeed Saroja Devi looks like VJ in this but most south indian heroines of that time till our very own Hema Malini managed to achieve the same look with marginal variations like Padmini, Ragini, Jamuna. and for that matter even Jaya Prada looked some what similar to all theses old timers

Hi Atul, Radhike toone bansari is based on Raaga Adana and not Raaga Darbari Kanada. Both raagas have the same notes but there is a difference in the way the notes are deployed. Adana is uttarang pradhan while Darbari is ponderous and poorvang pradhan.
