Ghar ghar mein deewaali hai mere ghar mein andheraa

Though Deewali is one of the most important festivals in India, Hindi movies do not have adequate number of Deewali songs in them. This is in sharp contrast to the songs for another major Indian festival, viz Holi. There are many more “Holi” songs than we have “Deewali” songs.
It is the third “Deewali” for this blog, and this time I will discuss those “Deepawali” songs that were not discussed during the previous two “Deepawali” occasions.
According to the information available with me, the oldest well known “deepawali” song in Hindi movies has to be from “Kismat” (1943). This song set a template for “deepawali” songs in the days to come. Though this is a festival of joy, the character singing the song does not feel this joy. This became the standard kind of “deepawali” song in future too, where the world would be celebrating the festival of light whereas the main character would be sad and gloomy.
This “deepawali” song from “Kismat” (1943) is a stage song, where Mumtaz Shanti sings about the plight of her life. The song is sung by Amirbai Karnataki. Pradeep is the lyricist and Anil Biswas composed the music.
Here is this old “deepawali” song, on the occasion of this festival of lights. I take this opportunity to greet all my visitors and wish a happy and prosperous “deepawali” as well as the new year. Yes, Deepawali also ushers in the new year according to the Indian calender.

Song-Ghar ghar mein deewaali hai mere ghar mein andheraa (Kismat) (1943) Singer-Amirbai Karnataki, Lyrics-Pradeep, MD-Anil Biswas
Lyrics
ae duniyaa bataa
ae duniyaa bataa
ae duniyaa bataa
hamne bigaadaa hai kyaa teraa
ghar-ghar mein deewaali hai
mere ghar mein andheraa
mere ghar mein andheraa
ghar-ghar mein deewaali hai
mere ghar mein andheraa
mere ghar mein andheraa
bachpan mein chhod ke
mere baabul chale gaye
bachpan mein chhod ke
mere baabul chale gaye
bahnaa chali gay
mere saajan chale gaye
mere saajan chale gaye
kismat ki thokaron ne
kiyaa haal kyaa meraa
kiyaa haal kyaa meraa
ghar-ghar mein deewaali hai
mere ghar mein andheraa
mere ghar mein andheraa
main kisko dhoondhhti hoon
iss andhiyaari raat mein
toote huye naseeb kaa
deepak le haath mein
main kisko dhoondhhti hoon
iss andhiyaari raat mein
toote huye naseeb kaa
deepak le haath mein
rote hi rote haay
rote hi rote haay
ho jaayegaa saweraa
ghar-ghar mein deewaali hai
mere ghar mein andheraa
hamne to fakeeron se
suni thi ye kahaani
qismat ki lakeeron se
bani duniyaa deewaani
hamne to fakeeron se
suni thi ye kahaani
qismat ki lakeeron se
bani duniyaa deewaani
do ghar ke beech mein bhi
hai deewaar kaa gheraa
do ghar ke beech mein bhi
hai deewaar kaa gheraa
ghar-ghar mein deewaali hai
mere ghar mein andheraa
mere ghar mein andheraa
ghar-ghar mein deewaali hai
mere ghar mein andheraa
mere ghar mein andheraa
chaaron taraf lagaa huaa
meenaa-bazaar hai
dhan ki jahaan pe jeet
gareebon ki haar hai
insaaniyat ke bhes mein
phirtaa hai luteraa
jee chaahtaa sansaar mein
main aag lagaa doon
soye huye insaan ki
qismat ko jagaa doon
thokar se udaa doon main
dayaa-dharm kaa deraa
ab kisko sunaaun main
meraa gham kaa taraanaa
patthar ke dilon ne meraa
dukh-dard naa jaanaa
ab kisko sunaaun main
meraa gham kaa taraanaa
patthar ke dilon ne meraa
dukh-dard naa jaanaa
mere jigar ke tukdon
ko kisne bikheraa
uff kisne bikheraa
ghar-ghar mein deewaali hai
mere ghar mein andheraa
mere ghar mein andheraa
ghar-ghar mein deewaali hai mere
chhoti si meri binti
suno ae more raajaa
suno ae more raajaa
o suno ae more raajaa
ek baar mere pyaar ke
panghat pe to aajaa
o panghat pe to aajaa
ae more raajaa
tere binaa sunsaan hai
bulbul kaa baseraa
tere binaa sunsaan hai
bulbul kaa baseraa
ghar-ghar mein deewaali hai
mere ghar mein andheraa
mere ghar mein andheraa
ghar-ghar mein deewaali hai

Happy Deepawali Atul. The Hindu calendars are quite varied(Vikram /Saka, different start dates, dark half of moon etc..). New Year is usually in April or March but in Gujarat it is during Diwali.
