“Putli”(1950) was produced and directed by Wali Sahab for Punjab Film Corporation, Bombay. The movie had Mumtaz Shanti ,Pran, Yaqoob, Husn Banu, Srinath, Majnu, Prem Dhawan, Ramesh Thakur , Sheela Naik etc in it.

The movie had eleven songs in it. Three songs from the movie have been covered in the past.

Here is the fourth song from the movie. HFGK mentions this song as sung by Meena Kapoor. On listening to the song, one can notice that the song has a male voice as well. There were two lyricists in the movie viz Wali Sahab and Abid Gulrez. HFGK is silent about the lyricist of the song. Seeing that Wali sahab was the maker of this movie, one can assume that most songs, including this song, must have been penned by him. So I have assumed Wali Sahab as the lyricist of this song.

Picturisation shows Mumtaz Shanti and a gentleman standing in front of microphones and singing. They are either singng live for the radio or or they are recording- I am not sure.

I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the identification of the male singer as well as the male actor in the picturisation.

There were two music directors in the movie. Music of this song is composed by Aziz Hindi.

Meena Kapoor is the singer. Wali Sahab is the lyricist. Music is composed by Aziz Hindi.

Sound quality is the video is average. The sound quality of the video version is very good and takes the listening pleasure of the song to a different level.

Today (23 november 2017) is the 87th birth anniversary of Geeta Dutt (23 november 1930 – 20 july 1972). On this occasion, here is a song from “Putli”(1950). HFGK is silent about the singer of this song, but listening to this song, one can clearly identify the voice as that of a young Geeta Roy as she was then known. The song is picturised on Mumtaz Shanti. Wali Sahab is the lyricist.

The movie had two music directors, viz Ghulam Haider and Aziz Hindi. This song was apparently the only song in the movie that was composed by Ghulam Haider as I gather from a comment on YT. I hope the commenter is correct about this fact.

The audio version, though clearer, is shorter in length. The video is longer but the audio quality is not all that great. One cannot have the best of both worlds in this case, I hope. Nevertheless, the fact that this rare song is available in audio as well as video form is something for us to rejoice about.

The picturisation shows a sapera playing a ben infront of a Nagin who then gets transformed to a lady (Mumtaz Shanti) who then sings this song. So we have “Naagin” like situations in Hindi movies even in pre “Naagin””(1954) days. 🙂

So, on the occasion of Geeta Dutt’s birth anniversary, here is this rare song from “Putli”(1950) as a tribute to her.

The ‘W’ song is a Rafi solo from the film ‘Ghar ki Izzat'(1948). From the sound of it, it does not sound like a 40’s song at all. Rather it feels like a 50’s song. The lyricist is Ishwar Chandra Kapoor and Pandit Govindram is the music director. Though the first hit solo by Rafi sahab is said to be from the film ‘Dulaari'(1949), Suhaani raat dhal chuki, but there are by some amazingly melodious songs like Keh ke bhi na aaye tum, Bahut maayoos hokar koochha e qaatil se ham nikle, Bahut mukhtsar hai hamaari kahaani, Ab na been bajaa, Mohabbat mein khudaaya aise guzre, Ae dil neend na aayee tamaam raat from before 1949. In these songs too he is standing out as the clearest and most mellifluous voice among singers of the time. Even more so in those two songs from the film ‘Amar Raj” (1946) posted in the blog. With songs like Ye zindagi ke mele and Ik dil ke tukde hazaar huye also in 1948, which are my personal favourites, Rafi sahab had already announced his arrival, even though we were not born to hear this announcement 🙂 🙂 .

Recently I watched GHAR KI IZZAT (1948) on YT. The film was produced under the banner of Murli Movietone and directed by Ram Daryani. The star cast included Dilip Kumar and Mumtaz Shanti in the lead role with Gope, Manorama, Dixit, Jeewan, Gulab, Suleman etc in the supporting roles. The melodramatic story of the film reminded me of some of the Hindi films produced from the South in the 50s and 60s.
