Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Mujhko gham e tanhaayi har zulm gawaaraa hai

Posted on: December 28, 2010

Very little is known Hindi movie songs from the earlier days, viz 1930s and 1940s. Those were the days when actors themselves sang for themselves. Sound reecording technology was in its infancy and producing decent quality records was a technological challenge. The fact that films and records quickly degraded meant that preservation of these items was a Herculean task as well.

Few records/ movies of 1930s have lasted by now, so we have to be thankful for whatever little still survives from that era.

Here is one such rare song from 1939. It is from a movie called Ghazi Salahuddin (1939). This song is sung by Ratanbai and it is picturised on herself in the movie. Lyricist of this song is not known. I request my knowledgeable readers to tell us about the lyricist of this song. Music director is the redoubtable Khemchand Prakash.

Here is this rare song from the earliest decade of Hindi movies.

Song-Mujhko gham e tanhaayi har zulm gawaaraa hai (Ghaazi Salahuddin) (1939) Singer-Ratanbai, MD-Khemchand Prakash

Lyrics

mujhko gham-e-tanhaayi
mujhko gham-e-tanhaayi
har zulm gawaaraa hai
mujhko gham-e-tanhaayi
har zulm gawaaraa hai
mujhko gham-e-tanhaayi
majboor hoon
bebas hoon
majboor hoon
bebas hoon
majboor hoon
bebas hoon
rahmat kaa sahaaraa hai
majboor hoon
bebas hoon
rahmat kaa sahaaraa hai
mujhko gham-e-tanhaayi
mujhko gham-e-tanhaayi
har zulm gawaaraa hai
mujhko gham-e-tanhaayi

seene mein machalte hain armaan shahaadat ke
seene mein machalte hain armaan shahaadat ke
aankhon mein basaa har dam
aankhon mein basaa har dam
jannat kaa nazaaraa hai
aankhon mein basaa har dam
jannat kaa nazaaraa hai
mujhko gham-e-tanhaayi
mujhko gham-e-tanhaayi
har zulm gawaaraa hai
mujhko gham-e-tanhaayi

har roz falak kis par
har roz falak kis par
tootenge sitam tere
har roz falak kis par
tootenge sitam tere
beemaar-e-shahaasat kaa
beemaar-e-shahaasat kaa
duniyaa se kinaaraa hai
beemaar-e-shahaasat kaa
duniyaa se kinaaraa hai
mujhko gham-e-tanhaayi
mujhko gham-e-tanhaayi
har zulm gawaaraa hai
mujhko gham-e-tanhaayi

Atul ji,

I am not able to trace the info about the lyricist; however, another interesting fact came up as I looked for info. This is the debut movie for Khemchand Prakash, as a music director. Prior to this, he worked as an assistant to Timir Baran starting in 1935 with ‘Devdas’.

In the last stanza ‘palak’ shluld be read as ‘falak’ which means sky, here it means the fate.

Atul ji,

Now it may be known to you that the singer-actor Rattanbai of ‘Ghazi Salahuddin’ (1939) and of some other films is not the mother of Shobana Samarth as written in your post. This Rattanbai was born on 12-06-1912 in Patna. Rattanbai Shilotri was the mother of Shobhana Samarth who had worked in only one Marathi film. I remember Arun ji had written about two different Rattanbai in one of the comments in Blog about 2-3 years back which I am not able to locate now.

Please correct your write-up accordingly for the sake of posterity.

About the lyricist of this beautiful ghazal, I have not been able to trace it. My guess is that this ghazal may have been written by Hakim Ahmad Shuja, a renowned writer and poet of Urdu and Persian.,who was the dialogue writer for this film.. In those days, in some of the films, song writing was a part of Screen-play/dialogue writers. I recall his famous ghazal ‘https://atulsongaday.me/2011/05/25/hairat-e-naazaaraa-aankhir-ban-gayin-raanaayiyaan/ sung by K L Saigal in ‘Kaarwaan-e-Hayaat’ (1935). Incidentally, Rattanbai acted in this film.
