“Station Master” (1942) is a movie that had Prem Adeeb and Ratnamala in lead roles. It was in this movie that Suraiyya, then 13 years of age, made her Hindi movie debut under the name of Baby Suraiyya. It was in this movie that she got to sung her first song, which was picturised on herself.
Here is that very first song picturised on Suraiyya. The picturisation of the song shows Prem Adeeb, who is visiting the home of Suraiyya, asking Suraiyya and her kid brother (Master Madhusudan) to sing a sing. The two shy kids look at each other prompting each other to begin. Unable to summon the necessary courage, they ask their elder sister Ratnamala to sing the song. Ratnamala, even more shy like a typical Bhartiya naari in the presence of someone on whom she has a crush, develops cold feet as well.”No, no, I cannot sing. In fact, I do not know how to sing”. She flatly denies having any knowledge of singing.
“What are you saying, didi, you yourself have taught us how to sing”- her two younger siblings protest, thus spilling the beans in front of Prem Adeeb. Now Prem Adeeb tells Ratnamala that she had no option but to sing. Cornerd thus, she states that she would just sing one line and that would be all. After singing one line which is “Saajan ghar aaye…” (My beloved has arrived home…), she coyly runs away to the next room. The song is then taken up by her two siblings.
The song is sung by Rajkumari and Suraiyya. P L Santoshi has written the cute song. Naushad is the music director. Yes, it is Naushad who gave Suraiyya her first break as a playback singer when she was barely 13 years of age. So this song from “Shation Master” (1942) is very much a historical and landmark song in the history of Hindi movie songs.
Here is this song of historical significance.
PS- Does this song have any third voice as well ? Raj Kumari sings for Ratnamala, but who sings for Master Madhusudan ? Is it Raj Kumari herself or some other singer ? Can someone throw light on this fact ?

A lovely song, and set to a beautiful composition. Simple words and simple picturization that touches the heart.

Indeed a very lovely song, thanks for the lyrics 🙂 Rajkumari Ji sings for Ratnamala Ji (popular pair), Suraiya Ji sings for herself and Madhusudhan Ji also sings for himself. He was a minor singing star who usually did small roles. He also sang the famous ‘Bharat Ki Ek Sannari Ki Hum Katha Sunate Hain’ with Yashwant Ji in Ram Rajya (1943). Till 1942 his voice was quite small – boyish but the next year he sounded quite mature and masculine.

In RAMRAJYA-1943, Yashwant ji had done the role of Lav and Madhusudan Jani had done the role of Kush.The famous song ‘Bharat ki ek sannari….’ was sung by Ram Apte for Yeshwant ji and Madhusudan Jani sang for himself as Kush.
This credit has been confirmed by Ramesh Gupta,the Lyricist of the song and Vijay Bhattt,as per their statements quoted in Listeners’ Bulletin No. 72 of Feb 1988.

Atul ji,
The HMV label identifies only two primary singers, i.e. Suraiya and Rajkumari. Apparently, Rajkumari’s playback is lip synced alternately by Ratanmala and Master Madhusudan.
