Suraiyya sang her first playback song for another actress at the age of 13. That was for Mehtab who was then 17 years of age. Mehtab (who incidentally was K Asif’s wife), on finding that her playback was being given by a 13 year old kid, got mad at her producers.
Of course, when the movie got released and the song became a hit, Mehtab got reconciled with the idea of Suraiyya giving playback for her. Suraiyya subsequently sang for Mehtab in several movies.
Here is one such song where Suraiyya sings for Mehtab. This movie is “Sanjog” (1943). this song is in fact a duet, a comedy duet in fact, where a male actor, played by Charlie, is seen making advances over Mehtab, and Mehtab plays along.
This song is sung by Charlie and Suraiyya. D N Madhok has come up with cute lyrics. I have in fact memtioned several times in the past that I am quite a fan of D N Madhok’s lyrics. Naushad is the music director.
