Aap ke paas jo aayegaa pighal jaayegaa

Posted on: March 2, 2011

“Kaajal” (1965) was a movie starring Raj Kumar, Meena Kumari, Dharmendra, Padmini etc. When I went to a movie hall in 1970s to watch this movie, I had no inkling about this movie and its songs. But when the movie began, and its songs arrived one after the other, I and other members of the audience gasped. Wow, this song is from this movie ! oh, this song is from this movie too ! And this song also ! Unbelievable, this song too !

Yes, this movie was full of iconic songs that Hindi movie music lover had grown up listeing to, without realising which movie those songs were from.

The movie was a tearjerker, and that is what you expect from a movie of 1960s with Raj Kumar and Meena Kumari in lead roles. But to people like us who were no fans of tearjerkers, the songs of this movie were the saving grace. I in fact maintain that this movie was successful because of its songs, rather than because of its story line which was painful to stand, even in those days.

I have discussed four songs from this movie. Curiously, all of them are solo songs. Two of them are sung by Rafi (lip synced by Raj Kumar)and the other two by Asha Bhonsle (lip synced by Meena Kumari). and all four of them are iconic songs.

Here is another solo song from this movie. This song, for a change is sung by Mahendra Kapoor and it is picturised on Dharmendra and Padmini. In keeping with the lofty standards of the songs of this movie, this song is an iconic song too.

Here is this song from “Kaajal” (1965). It is written by Sahir Ludhianvi. Music is composed by Ravi. It is not for nothing that I describe Ravi as a composer of iconic songs.

Song-Aap ke paas jo aayegaa pighal jaayegaa (Kaajal) (1965) Singer-Mahendra Kapoor, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi,MD-Ravi

Lyrics

aap ke paas jo aayegaa, pighal jaayegaa
aap ke paas jo aayegaa, pighal jaayegaa
is haraarat se jo uljhegaa, wo jal jaayegaa
aap ke paas jo aayegaa, pighal jaayegaa

aap kaa husn wo shabnam hai jo sholon mein paley
garm khushbuon mein tapte huye rangon mein dhaley
aap kaa husn wo shabnam hai jo sholon mein paley
garm khushbuon mein tapte huye rangon mein dhaley
kiskaa dil hai jo sambhaale se sambhal jaayegaa
aap ke paas jo aayegaa, pighal jaayegaa

honth hain yaa kisi shaayar ki duaaon kaa jawaab
zulf hain yaa kisi saawan ke talabgaar kaa khwaab
honth hain yaa kisi shaayar ki duaaon kaa jawaab
zulf hain yaa kisi saawan ke talabgaar kaa khwaab
aise jalwon ko jo dekhegaa machal jaayegaa
aap ke paas jo aayegaa, pighal jaayegaa

is kadar husn kisi ek mein dekhaa na sunaa
uskaa kyaa kahnaa jise aapne hamraaz chunaa
is kadar husn kisi ek mein dekhaa na sunaa
uskaa kyaa kahnaa jise aapne hamraaz chunaa
uski taqdeer kaa unwaan badal jaayegaa
aap ke paas jo aayegaa, pighal jaayegaa
is haraarat se jo uljhegaa, wo jal jaayegaa
aap ke paas jo aayegaa, pighal jaayegaa

Ha ha ha! Movie is pretty unbearable, I agree! But the songs are lovely, lovely.

Indeed, I too found the moving utterly unbearable.

I saw this movie on a flight to India only last year. I had a choice between new movies and old classics. I’d been warned about it but I was tempted to see it, for the songs alone. Oh, what a stupid movie! I felt like just plucking my eyes out. The songs are just superb though, starting right from the opening bhajan (one of my favorite Asha songs).

The opening credits are great — that is usually what I watch and listen to (nice bhajan).
