There have been several movies called “Devdas”. All these movies had nice songs in them.
“Devdas” (1955) perhaps had the most number of memorable songs of all these “Devdas” movies. Quite a few songs of this movie have ended up becoming evergreen classics.
I find that I have discussed only two songs from this movie.
Here is another song from this movie. This song is a lesser known song (at least as far as I am concerned). I heard this song for the first time just a few hours ago. What a song it is !
This song is sung by Mubarak Begam. This song gets played in the background as Devdas leaves the doorsteps of Chandramukhi, with the knowledge that the two may not meet again.
Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist of this moving song. Music is composed by S D Burman.
This song is a gem that was hidden from my view all these days.

Song-Wo na aayenge palat kar (Devdas) (1955) Singer-Mubaarak Begam, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-S D Burman
Lyrics (based on audio clip)
aa aa aa
wo na aayenge palat kar
unhein laakh ham bulaayen
wo na aayenge palat kar
unhein laakh ham bulaayen
meri hasraton se keh do
ke ye khwaab bhool jaayen
meri hasraton se keh do
ke ye khwaab bhool jaayen
agar iss jahaan ka maalik
kahin mil sake to poochhen
mili kaun si khaataa par
hamen is qadar sazaayen
mili kaun si khaataa par
hamen is qadar sazaayen
wo na aayenge palat kar
unhein laakh ham bulaayen
teri berukhi pe sadqe
aa aa aa
teri berukhi pe sadqe
meri zindagi ki khushiyaan
tu agar isi mein khush hai
to khushi se kar jafaayen
tu agar isi mein khush hai
to khushi se kar jafaayen
wo na aayenge palat kar
unhein laakh ham bulaayen
meri hasraton se keh do
ke ye khwaab bhool jaayen

आ आ आ

Atul ji,
Yes, a most wonderful gem of a song this one is. The pensive voice of Mubarak Begum so beautifully captures the emotions of this song and its words.
In the movie, this song is played in the background. Devdas (Dilip Kumar) is leaving Chandramukhi (Vijayantimala), and is embarking on a last aimless journey of his life. The dialogue exchange between the two is really touching, and lot more is expressed that just the words. In their hearts both of them know that they will probably never meet again, and yet, an unsaid hope is that they might. Just close to the end of this exchange, this song starts to plays in the background, and continues as Devdas walks down the steps and rides away in a tonga, while Chandramukhi sees from her balcony, having a last gaze at the one she loves, never to see or meet again.
The essence of this scene is a very soft sadness and a resignation to the wiles of fate, and this song captures it so well, playing the background, and in the minds of Chandramukhi and Devdas.
The song is so beautifully crafted in words, in composition and in the voice; and so approprately expresses the unsaid between the two lovers, that this is probably their last meeting. . . . “wo na aayenge palat kar. . . “.
Such a wonderful rendition by Mubarak Begum, it is a surprise that she was so underutilized by the composers of that era.
