Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Apne naam ke kareeb mera bhi naam likh do

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Prem Dhawan is better known as a lyricist who has had a very long stint of more than 5 decades in the Hindi film industry.

Born in 1923 in Ambala, he started his filmi career in 1946, working as an assistant to Khurshid Anwar for the film Pagdandi, which was produced in Lahore. Subsequently he came to Bombay, and his first break as a lyricist was in the movie Ziddi (also the debut movie of Kishore Kumar). “Chanda re ja re ja re, piyaa se sandesa mora kahiyo jaaye” is an icon song from this movie, penned by him. He learnt music under Pt. Ravi Shankar, and dance under Uday Shankar. He has been a very prolific contributor to the industry, having written songs for over 300 movies. He was an accomplished dancer himself and appeared with Cuckoo in the 1949 film Singaar in a dance number. Watch the male dancer in the song, Ari o mohe chhed gayaa. He also choreographed for many movies; recall the wonderful dance number Uden Jab Jab Zulfen Teri from Naya Daur.

Prem Dhawan is less known as a composer. He has done a handful of films as a music director; another underrated and less recognized talent in the industry. Recall the movies like Shaheed (1965 production of Manoj Kumar), Pavitra Paapi, Boot Polish Tel Maalish. Another movie was the Dev Kumar, Sonia Sahni starrer “B” movie titled Raat Ke Andhere Mein. This movie has some very good and memorable songs, written and composed by him.

This song is picturized on Dev Kumar and Sonia Sahni; a typical walk-in-the-garden song. It is a picnic situation, and Dev and Sonia are part of the group; a great opportunity for the hero to sing a song to woo the heroine. As is customary for people in love, they would write their names on trees, walls etc. Sonia is writing her own name on the thick leaf of a cactus plant; Dev Kumar sees this and finding this to be an occasion to reveal his feelings to her, starts with this song.

For a change, both Dev and Sonia have given reasonably good performances in this song.

Dev Kumar with all his physique and he man looks, could not make it to grade “A” in the movies, because of a very wooden expression he carried on the screen, most of the time. But in this song, one sees a notable difference as Dev is somewhat successful in rendering the correct expressions and mood for the song.

Lyrics and music is by Prem Dhawan, and Rafi sahib has sung this song with exceptional abandon and enthusiasm.
Enjoy this lovely composition.

Song-Apne naam ke kareeb mera bhi naam likh do (Raat Ke Andhere Mein)(1969) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Prem Dhawan, MD-Prem Dhawan

Lyrics

apne naam ke kareeb
mera bhi naam likh do
mera bhi naam likh do
ban jaaye yaadgaar jo
ban jaaye yaadgaar jo
aisa payaam likh do
apne naam ke kareeb
mera bhi naam likh do
mera bhi naam likh do

ab tak kati ye zindagi
gam ki andheri raat mein
likhe huye thhey gham hi gham
kismet ne mere haath mein
aaj isi haath mein koi
aaj isi haath mein koi
rang bhari shaam likh do
apne naam ke kareeb
mera bhi naam likh do
mera bhi naam likh do

dil mein tumhaare aayegaa
aakhir koi to khush naseeb
nazar e karam jo mujh pe ho
aa jaaun mein zaraa kareeb
mere naseeb mein hi tum
mere naseeb mein hi tum
hotthon ke jam likh do
apne naam ke kareeb
mera bhi naam likh do
mera bhi naam likh do

aashiq hazaaron aur bhi
aayenge is maqaam pe
likhenege apne naam wo
saath hamaare naam ke
aaj unhin aashiqon ke naam
aaj unhin aashiqon ke naam
mera salaam likh do
apne naam ke kareeb
mera bhi naam likh do
mera bhi naam likh do
ban jaaye yaadgaar jo
ban jaaye yaadgaar jo
aisa payaam likh do
apne naam ke kareeb
mera bhi naam likh do
mera bhi naam likh do

Thanks for the info on Prem Dhawan! I had always thought of him as a lyricist, but never knew that he was also a music director and choreographer. What a talented man!

I vaguely remember listening to this song once upon a time, but had no idea about who was acting in the movie, and frankly, I cannot even remember hearing about the movie’s release, so I guess it just sank within a few weeks of its release. Listening to the song after so many years is giving me a new appreciation for the song and its music. Thanks, Atul and Sudhir!
