This is another gem of a ghazal by Mubarak Begum. Hameer Hatth is an lesser known film from 1964. Produced under the banner of Jagdish Films, Bombay, it is directed by Jawant Jhaveri. The star cast of the movie includes Nirupa Roy, Jairaj, Manhar Desai, Anita Guha, Helen, Sapru, Vijaya Cahoudhary, BM VYas, etc. The music is composed by another less celebrated talent, Sanmukh Babu Upadhyay. There are a total of eight songs in the film, written by three lyricists, Neelkanth Tewari, Uday Khanna, and Saraswati Kumar ‘Deepak’. This particular song is penned by Saraswati Kumar Deepak, and has been beautifully rendered by Mubarak Begum.
Our in house encyclopedia of the films of yesteryear, Arun ji Deshmukh, has described the background and storyline of the film as follows,
Hameer Hathh is the story of Rana Hameer of Ranthambore in Rajasthan. He was the king of Ranthambore at the time when the Khilji dynasty was ruling in Delhi, and Allaudin Khilji was on the throne. Alladudin Khilji’s ambitions to enlarge his empire by coercion and annexations, were repelled by Rana who refused to accede to Allaudin Khilji’s coercion, and merge with his empire. Enraged at this, Allaudin Khilji attacked Ranthambore, but was defeated by Rana. Truce followed, and the two kings agreed to negotiate for peace. When peace talks failed, Allaudin Khilji tried crooked ways thru’ his court dancer Shabnam, to somehow influence Rana. But in this ploy also, Rana is victorious.
The film has a subplot of a love affair between Allaudin Khilji’s sister, Mallika, and his chief of army, Mirmangol. To escape from the wrath of Allaudin Khilji, Mirmangol seeks asylum with the Rana, who gives him shelter in his kingdom.
Rana’s tale is an important part of the history of Rajasthan, and also forms a part of the popular folklore in the state.
This song is presented on screen by Helen. Also visible in the clip is Manhar Desai, who plays the role of Rana. Helen plays the role of Shabnam, the secret emissary of Allaudin Khilji, who is attempting to somehow win over and change the mind of Rana, by using her charm and beauty. But as Arun ji has indicated above, she is not successful.
However, a wonderful ghazal, composed with such a lilting tune by Sanmukh Babu, and sung equally well by Mubarak Begum. Enjoy.

Sudhir ji,
I remember having seen this movie for its war scenes.
This is the story of Rana Hameer of Ranthambore in Rajasthan. It details how Rana refuses to merge with the empire of Allauddin Khilji.Enraged,A.K. attacks and gets defeated by Rana. When peace talks fail,AK tries crooked ways thru’ his court dancer Sabnam, but here too Rana is victorious.
There is a subplot of Mirmangol, chief of AK’s army and Mallika,AK’s sister’s love affair,in which Rana gives shelter to Mirmangol.
This is a famous folklore even today in Rajasthan.
Besides good songs, the war and hunting scenes are extremely convincing.
