Mubarak Begum – such a mesmerizing voice, and such soulful renditions. In my humble opinion, I would rate her as the best female ghazal singer of the golden era of Hindi film music. She is incomparable in this milieu.
After some commercial success and recognition in the fifties, she was sidelined and overlooked for many years, till eventually, she faded from the public memory. In the 60s and 70s, she continued to sing, albeit mostly in obscure movies. When given an opportunity in a grade A or movies that were successful, she is got to perform no more than one song – a great injustice to such a talented artist.
This ghazal is a well known piece from the 60s. I remember this from childhood, and this even makes grade in the one volume selection of Mubarak Begum hits, published by HMV. However, the movie cannot be any more unknown and obscure. This is from a 1964 movie called Marvel Man, starring Shakila Bano Bhopali, Mahesh Kumar, Shri Bhagwan, Rajan Kapoor, Polson, Shakuntala, Prem Prakash etc. The movie itself escaped any notice by the public, but it had good music. Unfortunately, even all the music is not published on records; so unless the original print is released on discs, we could have lost the music of this movie.
The lyrics are written by Yogesh, and the lovely composition is by Robin Bannerjee. Enjoy is this gem of a ghazal, in the voice of Mubarak Begum.
Song-Aankhon aankhon mein har ek raat guzar jaati hai (Marvel Man) (1964) Singer-Mubarak Begam, Lyrics-Yogesh, MD-Robin Bannerji
Lyrics
aankhon aankon mein har ek raat guzar jaati hai
aankhon aankon mein har ek raat guzar jaati hai
tum nahin aate ho to yaad bhi kyun aati hai
aankhon aankon mein har ek raat guzar jaati hai
hum khayaalon mein bulaa letey hain aksar tumko
hum khayaalon mein bulaa letey hain aksar tumko
jab tabeeyat zaraa tanhaayi se ghabraati hai
jab tabeeyat zaraa tanhaayi se ghabraati hai
aankhon aankon mein har ek raat guzar jaati hai
har ek aahat pe yoon hum chaunk uthhaa karte hain
har ek aahat pe yoon hum chaunk uthhaa karte hain
jis tarah bijli ghataaon mein chamak jaati hai
tum nahin aate ho to yaad bhi kyun aati hai
aankhon aankon mein har ek raat guzar jaati hai

Sudhir ji,
I agree with you that Mubarak Begum was an excellent Gazal singer.Alas ! The ways of the world are such that, once the queen of Gazal, had to struggle for a square meal in her fallen days !
She stayed in a one room tenement in Oshiwara,Mumbai and her son drove Autorikhshaw for a living.
Nana Patekar, who learnt about her plight, arranged for a concert of her singing in Pune. That gave her around 2 lakhs.
When reporters went to Oshiwara, she had left the place and her whereabouts were not known to anybody.
One felt very sad when these things came in papers.
Whom to blame, the Bollywood system,Misfortune or our bad luck ?

One reason why Mubarak Begam did not go far was that she was unlettered, so she was unable to read lyrics of songs and she had to memorise the songs. This obviously meant that she would take more time to record songs that others who could read the lyrics from a peace of paper.
Being uneducated has other handicaps too. It is unfortunate that she did not get as manty opportunities that her talent merited.
