Earlier decades of Indian independence (1950s and 1960s) saw much enthusiasm for nation building in public life as well as in movies. And Soviet Union style socialism was considered the way to progress. Many movies were made on the theme of nation building in those days. and these movies naturally had songs to inspire people.
Here is one such inspirational song from “Chaar Dil Chaar Raahen” (1959). This song sees people working manually to realise the dream of nationa building. yes, it was believed that working manually, as against with machines was the way forward.
Here is this song where as many as four singers lend their voices. Mukesh, Mahendra Kapoor, Manna Dey and Meena Kapoor are the singers who sing for several actors on the screen. I can identify Raj Kapoor, Jairaj, Meena Kumari, Kumkum, to name a few and I am unable to identify others. I requesy my knowledgeable readers to help identify the others.
Sahir Ludhianvi had written the lyrics. From the lyrics, it is obvious that Sahir Ludhianvi, like many other lyricists of those days firmly believed in socialism and believed that it was going to help the nation reach its cherished goal of nation building.
Anil Biswas is the music director.

Lyrics
saathi re
saathi re
qadam qadam se dil se dil milaa rahe hain ham
vatan mein ek nayaa chaman khilaa rahe hain ham
har qadam qadam se dil se dil milaa rahe hain ham
vatan mein ek nayaa chaman khilaa rahe hain ham
har qadam qadam se dil se dil
saathi re bhaai re
ham aaj neenv rakh rahe hain us nizaam ki
us nizaam ki
bike na zindagi jahaan kisi ghulaam ki
kisi ghulaam ki
luten na mehnaten pise huye aawaam ki
na bhar sake tijoriyaan koi haraam ki
saathi re
bhaai re
har ek oonch-neech ko mitaa rahe hain ham
har qadam qadam se dil se dil milaa rahe hain ham
vatan mein ek nayaa chaman khilaa rahe hain ham
har qadam qadam se dil se dil
saathi re bhaai re
hamaare baazuon mein aandhiyon kaa zor hai
aandhiyon kaa zor hai
hamaari dhadkanon mein baadlon kaa shor hai
hamaare haath mein vatan ki baagdor hai
na bach ke jaa sakenge jinke dil mein chor hai
saathi re bhaai re
suno ki apnaa faislaa sunaa rahe hain ham
har qadam qadam se dil se dil milaa rahe hain ham
vatan mein ek nayaa chaman khilaa rahe hain ham
har qadam qadam se dil se dil
saathi re bhaai re
uthaa liyaa hai ab samaajwaad ka nishaan
samaajwaad ka nishaan
?? honge ab hamaari khetiyaan
aye hamaari khetiyan
chalengin sabke waaste milon ki charkhiyaan
zameen se aasmaan talak uthengin chimniyaan
saathi re bhaai re
kahaa thha jo wo karke ab dikhaa rahe hain ham
har qadam qadam se dil se dil milaa rahe hain ham
vatan mein ek nayaa chaman khilaa rahe hain ham
har qadam qadam se dil se dil
saathi re bhai re
uthhen wo naujawaan jinko pyaar chaahiye
jinko pyaar chaahiye
kahen wo dulhaen jinhen singaar chaahiye
jinhen singaar chaahiye
chalen wo gulsitaan jinhe nikhaar chaahiye
sunen wo bastiyaan jinhen bahaar chaahiye
saathi re bhai re
ke zindagi ko uska haq dilaa rahe hain ham
har qadam qadam se dil se dil milaa rahe hain ham
vatan mein ek nayaa chaman khilaa rahe hain ham
har qadam qadam se dil se dil
saathi re bhai re
ye raastaa sunahri manzilon ko jaayegaa
manzilon ko jaayegaa
ye raastaa khushi ki bastiyaan basaayegaa
bastiyaan basaayegaa
bicchad gaye thhe jo unhen qareeb laayega
ye raastaa wo hai
jo dil se dil milaayegaa
saathi re bhai re
ke ab tamaam faasle mitaa rahe hain ham
har qadam qadam se dil se dil milaa rahe hain ham
vatan mein ek nayaa chaman khilaa rahe hain ham
har qadam qadam se dil se dil milaa rahe hain ham
vatan mein ek nayaa chaman khilaa rahe hain ham
har qadam qadam se dil se dil

Atul ji,
Soon after Independence of India, most young people were carried away with the idea of making India,a heaven for poor people, devoid of ills of illiteracy, casteism, etc.etc. They dreamt of an India which was Sujalam-Suphalam,insisted on dignity of labour and hatred for the Rich and Riches !
However, before time and our greedy politicians shattered their dreams, the youngsters from film world made lot of films on these and such subjects.
When K.A.Abbas,Raj Kapoor and Sahir came together,no wonder they wanted to make a film which will deliver their ideas.
Unfortunately, despite a group of capable stars, the film Char Dil Char Rahen was a total mess because toomany issues were handled in one film and no focus was possible on any issue.
Dignity of Labour,Casteism,Religions, illeteracy,Alcoholism,Child widows,Untouchability were some of thr issues in the film.
It actually consisted of stories of 4 different people, totally unconnected, and the central character-so to say-was a crossroad of 4 roads.
Rajkapoor(Milkman caste) with Meenakumari(Chamaar caste,and a child widow too),Ajit(Muslim Driver),Nimmi(Tawayaf),Shammi Kapoor(Christian Mechanic),Kumkum(Aayaah),David(Croocked Manager) and Jairaj(Hindu contractor were the main characters.
Director K.A.Abbas probably got so much confused that he made a mess of the film.
The only solace was Anilda’s music.
