Regular visitors of this blog may have been noticing that I was discussing lots and lots of songs composed by Anil Biswas these days. And a few regulars may also be aware of the reason behind that. These days I am quite particular to see that major artists who have less than 100 of their songs in this blog reach their century of songs as quickly as I can help it.
And Sudhir, a regular contributor to this blog, also realised it and he helped a lot by sending me articles on several great Anil Biswas songs.
Now the wait is over, and finally we have reached Anil Biswas’s century in this blog !
Yes, this song is the 100th Anil Biswas song in this blog.
Music lovers of Hindi movie songs will appreciate the fact that Anil Biswas was one of the major pillars of Hindi movie music as we know it today. He made his debut as a music director in early 1930s when Hindi movie music was at its infancy. He pioneered many innovations that later became standard practices.
In fact, if I am not mistaken, it was Anil Biswas who first pioneered the idea of playback singing in Hindi (and Indian) movies. His seminal contributions in Hindi movie music is matched by his equally seminal contributions in setting up Vividh Bharati in mid 1950s, when he helped create the signature tunes for many Vividh Bharati programmes. Three decades later, he would help create the signature tunes/theme tunes for TV serials on Doordarshan.
We have discussed Anil Biswas’ compositions from as many as 35 movies, beginning with “Jaageerdaar” (1937) to his last movie “Chhoti Chhoti Baaten” (1965). And what wonderful songs they have been ! Many of these songs have helped shape the corse for Hindi movie music. Why just that, a few of his songs helped shape the course of Indian History as well. For example, the song from K”ismat”(1943), viz Door hato ae duniya waalon Hindustan hamaara hai (Kismat) inspired Indian freedom fighters in their struggle against British imperialism. And it was Anil Biswas, who gave Hindi movie music world Mukesh with the immrtal song Dil jalta hai to jalne de (Pehli Nazar) . He was one of the first composers to make great use of Talat Mehmood’s voice in movies like “Taraanaa” (1951),”Aarzoo” (1951) etc. He also made great use of the voices of Manna Dey,Lata, and other singers. Meena Kapoor was one singer whom he promoted a lot.
This 100th Anil Biswas song of the blog is one featuring Kishore Kumar’s voice. and here Kishore Kumar’s comic genius is exploited to the hilt by Anil Biswas. The movie is “Paisa Hi Paisa” (1956) and here Kishore Kumar is the actor as well as the singer.
In fact, I am surprised that this song is not as well known as it should be.
Majrooh Sultanpuri has written this funny song. The singing, as well as the picturisation can amuse the watchers even today, more than half a century later. Itis a timeless composition indeed.
So here is this great gem of a song from “Paisa Hi Paisa” (1956) which is a tribute to the genius of Anil Biswas as well as Kishore Kumar and Majrooh Sultanpuri.

Great song.
Can’t think of any toher singer but Kishore make justice to this.
Wonder why Anil Biswas didn’t compose more music for Hindi films later on?

Anil Biswas began his career in early 1930s and retired from music direction in 1965.

Another notable milestone – and congrats for bringing together so many of the wonderful creations by Anil Da. May this blog prosper and continue to host more and more wonderful music from Hindi films.
This is song is simply hilarioous, and very much befitting the singer. 🙂
On the note about playback singing – this concept was pioneered by Rai Chand Boral (RC Boral). In 1935, he introduced playback singing forthe first time in the Hindi feature film Dhoop Chhaon. The very first song to be filmed using this playback technology was “Mein Khush Honaa Chahoon”, an all women chorus led by Parul Ghosh. It was picturised on Suprova Sarkar and Harimati as a dance sequence. It is said that some friends suggested to RC Boral for getting this concept and technology patented, but he did not agree to it. Probably he did not realize the signigificance and potential of this technology, which was to become the most important aspect of recorded film music. There is a lot of what-if scenarios that can be painted, had this concept been patented. 🙂

A brief note on the other actors in the clip.
The old man apparently stricken with illness and lying on the bed is Radha Kishen.
The old lady in the sari, (probably the old man’s wife in the movie), is Chanda Bai.
Mukri is the dumpy and squat sing along partner for Kishore da.
The thin balding doctor with glasses is Haroon.
Remaining three characters visible in the clip – another doctor in a black coat, yet another doctor in a white coat, and another lady carrying a bag – are familiar junior artists, but I cannot identify them.

The old lady in the sari is not Chanda Bai but Husn Banu, the singer-actor of 1930s and 40s.

It was Anil Biswas,at the time of recording ‘Dil jalta hai to…’ from Pehli Nazar (1945),that he asked Mukesh to come out of the shadow of Saigal and establish his own unique style.

Just another piece of information. Mukesh debut film was Nirdosh (1941) which came four years before Pehli Nazar. The Nirdosh song Dil hi bujha hua hai to fasle-bahar kya composed by Ashok Ghosh is quite outstanding, and I understand he sang many songs till Pehli Nazar. Dil jalta hai to jalne de of course acquired an iconic status, and it also caused unintended misunderstanding that it was Mukesh’s first song.

Apropos your post on Playback singing in films,I have some more information.
You are right in pointing out that its credit goes to R.C.Boral,but for Dhoop Chhaon (or Bhagya Chakra),the music was given by R.C.Boral AND Pankaj Mullick.Hence credit must go to both.
Secondly,the chorus song was sung by Parul Ghosh,Harimati,Suprova Sarkar and others,while it was presented as a stage song of a drama company in which Suprova,Harimati and many others featured.
This New Theatre’s film was directed by Nitin Bose,who never liked the idea of Playback singing,but the insistance of Lyricist Pandit Sudarshan,R.C.Boral,P.Mullick and the producers prevailed and a new technique was born.Nitin Bose,however,never directed any other movie for New Theatres after this !

Congrats for getting a hundred for another artiste, Atul.
From what I’ve read, Anil Biswas was supposedly considered a giant among music directors of his time. He is supposed to have been very encouraging of new singers. I remember even Lata speaking fondly of him as one of the MDs who encouraged her a lot in her early days.
And it was either Anil Biswas or Naushad (I am not sure which of these two) who told Mukesh to stop trying to copy Saigal saab and to develop his own style and voice. 🙂
As you may have noticed, I’ve not been visiting this blog in the last few days, so I have some catching up to do. No problem, I will bring the Required Run Rate down. 😉

I think you are still in India ? You can afford to let the run rate up as long as you are with relatives. Then you can wear your Pollard/ Yusuf Pathan/Gayle hat to bring the runrate down. 🙂
