Chori chori jo tumse mili to log kyaa kahenge

Posted on: May 10, 2011

“Parasmani” (1963) was a B grade Hindi movie of the kind that were typically passed over by the mainstream Hindi movie watchers. But this movie had such stunning music that people sat up and took notice. and the music may have brought substantially more number of people to the movie halls than what a typical B grade movie merited.

Music of this movie was composed by Laxmikant Ptyarelal who were making their debut as independent music directors wit this movie. Prior to this movie, they had served long periods of apprenticeship as musicians in the orchestras of established music directors and later as assistant music directors/arrangers to Kalyanji Anandji. During this period, they had built up good reputations and good contacts, which helped them when they became independent music directors.

In “Parasmani” (1963), Laxmikant Pyarelal made use of several singers and got the best out of them. I have discussed as many as five songs from this movie. This movie had Mahipal and Geetanjali in lead roles and they lip synced in the voices of Rafi and Lata respectively.

I have recently found that there was one song from this movie where Mahipal lip syncs not in Rafi’s voice but in Mukesh’s voice. It is a duet and Lata lends her voice for Geeanjali’as usual.

This duet is just as pleasing to listen to as any other songs from this movie.

Here is this duet from “Parasmani” (1963). It is written by Farooque Kaisar.

Lyrics

chori-chori jo tumse mili to log kyaa kahenge
chori-chori jo tumse mili to log kyaa kahenge
aji ise pyaar kahenge
aji ise pyaar kahenge
aji ise pyaar kahenge
aji ise pyaar kahenge
gali gali ye baat chali to log kyaa kahenge
gali gali ye baat chali to log kyaa kahenge
aji ise pyaar kahenge
aji ise pyaar kahenge
aji ise pyaar kahenge
aji ise pyaar kahenge

teraa khayaal mere dil mein jab se aayaa hai
qadam sambhalte nahin aur nashaa saa chhaayaa hai
qaraar kho ke hi dil ne qaraar paayaa hai
haan
qaraar kho ke hi dil ne qaraar paayaa hai
ho ho ho ho
ho ho ho ho
dheere dheere ye baat badhhi to log kyaa kahenge
dheere dheere ye baat badhhi to log kyaa kahenge
aji ise pyaar kahenge
aji ise pyaar kahenge
aji ise pyaar kahenge
aji ise pyaar kahenge

kitni zaalim ye mulaaqaat huyi
jisase darte thhe wahi baat huyi
badh gayi pyaas tamannaaon ki
is tarah pyaar ki barsaat huyi
qasam tumhaari mere dil ki baat keh daali
ho
qasam tumhaari mere dil ki baat kah daali
ho ho ho ho ho

khataayen hamse huyin hain sazaayen maangin hain
wafaayen ki hain sanam aur wafaayen maangin hain
haan
wafaayen ki hain sanam aur wafaayen maangin hain
ho ho ho ho
ho ho ho ho
sochenge ham na ye kabhi
ki log kyaa kahenge
sochenge ham na ye kabhi
ki log kyaa kahenge
aji ise pyaar kahenge
aji ise pyaar kahenge
aji ise pyaar kahenge
aji ise pyaar kahenge

I give below some less known facts about L-P.
Laxmikant Kudalkar had no musical background. He played Mandoline and Violin.
Pyarelal was a son of Ramprasad Sharma,a Music Director in 40s decade.
In their struggling days, they came together when both played at the Mangeshkar Concert at Radio club,Colaba in Bombay.Lata noticed them, enquired, and they started working for ‘Sureela Kala Kendra’,a childrens Music Academy run by the Mangeshkars.Meanwhile Lata recommended them to Shankar Jaikishen,C.Ramchandra and S.D.Burman and they started working as Music arrangers. They also assisted Kalyanji-Anandji duo.
When they were established, they did not have any reservations about any singer and almost every singer was used by them.
They were so friendly with R.D.Burman,that he played Mouth organ in some songs of Dosti,on theis invitation !
They won maximum 7 Filmfare Awards.
Laxmikant died of Kidney failure on 25-5-1998.His family stays in a bungalow, which is named as ‘Parasmani’,their first film as MD.
Pyarelal stays in Bandra,Mumbai.

Though I am not such a big LP fan, i love their music from Parasmani and Milan.
I’m not very good at Hindi but won’t ‘chori-chori jo tumse MILU to log kyaa kahenge’ be grammatically correct? But on the other hand it is poetic license, I think. Although it is quite possible that I’m wrong.

Atul ji,

“… and the music may have brought substantially more number of people to the movie halls than what a typical B grade movie merited.”

How true this statement is. I recall, that sometimes in the late 1980s, I took an unreported break from work on a working day, and traveled some distance on bus and then on foot, to reach a dilapidated C class cinema hall, where Parasmani was being shown, as a rerun. Only to see the songs and how they were picturized on the screen.

Till well into late 80s and early 90s, cinema halls in Delhi and Bomaby used to carry reruns of old classics, sometimes all shows, or sometimes the morning show at 9 am, before the regular shows. I remember having bunked classes from college, or slinking away from office (after I had started working), just to see these old classics.

I remember I was posted in Bombay, and local cinemas would occasionally celebrate week long festivals of old classics e.g. Guru Dutt movies, or Dev Anand movies. That used to be a bonanza, and I would make it a point to get to such cinemas every evening of such festival weeks.

Nowaday, with many large cinema halls in large cities out of business, and in the current age of multiplexes, it has been literally years since I have seen any ads for old classic movies being shown on the large screen. It is such a pity. I wish I had the resources to run a cinema hall, I would be playing the old classics all the time. 🙂

Arunji,

Just a doubt.
All these years, I was under the impression that LP’s first recorded song was ‘Main ek nanha sa bacha hoon’ from HARISHCHANDRA TARAMATI (1963). So I felt that this movie was LP’s first assignment as MD. It is quite possible that PARASMANI (1963) might have got released first.
